Hi de hi campers, join me for another wet and windy wild camp. This time I'm on Dartmoor and pitch my tarp and bivvy on Great Staple Tor. I enjoy some hot dogs and a couple of beers.
I use the Alpkit Rig 3.5 tarp on this camp in conjunction with my Dutch Army Hooped Bivvi bag.

Swiss Miss? I smiled and laughed when I spotted the packet. Wow. I do live in the US and I have not had that since I was a kid in the 80s. Maybe I'll get it again. 😁

Yes it was Swiss Miss. I really liked it, thought it was better than most of the hot chocolate brands available here in the UK 👍

Cheers Nick, yeah it's a lovely tor to visit. To be honest they all seem to be nice in that Merrivale area. If I ever get up there with some good weather then I think I'll be tempted to venture a bit further on to the moor towards Fur Tor. Thanks for checking out the video 👍

Nice one Barney. That looked a damp blustery camp. Still fun though i bet. Looks an awesome place to explore and camp . Shame about the mist in the morning, reckon the old sunrise wouldve been a sight. Take care Barney 👌🏕

Cheers Mark, yeah it was great to get up on the moor despite the conditions. Damp and blustery pretty much summed up the two weeks that I've spent down in the west country! Not the best weather, but tis the season so it pays to be prepared. It'll make the good weather camps more enjoyable! Thanks as always for checking out the video 👍

Hi Paul, hope you had a good Christmas. The thing with the weather is that you can't influence it. So long as it's safe, the best thing to do is to just embrace it and of course make sure that you're suitably prepared. The beauty of the moor though is that you've got plenty of rocks and crags to hide behind and that's precisely what I did! Yes mate loved that one. Proper little rough weather bunker that set up. Great choice of dinner 👌 loved the clouds and mist can't beat rough weather. Look forward to the next one sir 👍

I'm American (been living in the UK for over 22 years), and that was always my favourite hot chocolate. It's one of the things I really miss from home. Great camping video, out there on Dartmoor, by yourself in the dank weather -- under a tarp! Cheers.

Another nice video there Gavin, like that compact mess tin set up too. Amazing how much you can stuff in the hood of the dutch bivvy lol. Glad you managed to get a camp in up there despite the damp and windy conditions! 👍👍

Cheers John, it turned out to be a fairly pleasant camp and it's surprising how much kit you can fit in the dutchy. The rucksack works great as a bit of a booster for the pillow. Thanks as always for checking out the video 👍

Great video. I take it you’re from Rochester way? I’m down tut road in Maidstone. When you’re thinking of a Bivi camp or bumble and brew locally in the new year would be great to join to test out my stratosphere.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Good luck with your search for a tent. I have an MSR Elixir 2 which is quite generously sized and can definitely recommend it. Aside from that, some of the Terra Nova tents look like they might be quite long?

That mess kit is pretty cool, and Ideal for what you're making Gavin. The stick that you use for your tarp, how long have you had that? Was it green when you made it? I presume you use it as a walking stick as well? I like it. Your tarp over the DA always looks sturdy. I do like Dartmoor, only been the once, and it was horrendous weather! Enjoyed 👍

Cheers Lee, yeah the Hazel stick was cut green a few years ago and I whittled a few patterns into it. I've got a few knocking around in the shed and am too tight to buy one of them fancy walking poles! It comes out to play whenever I'm taking the tarp somewhere where there aren't any trees. It's quite multi-purpose; walking stick, tarp pole and mono-pod whenever I strap my Ultra pod to it for vlogging. Dartmoor is a great place to camp. But, like you, I've yet to get any decent weather for any of my camps in the SW. I have some sort of hex hanging over me! 👍

In a way those hooped bivvies take away the sense of freedom tarp camping gives you. You might have been better served with a tent as you say but personally I'd take a larger tarp for a more storm-worthy pitch and a flat bivvy bag to protect my sleeping bag. Just my two cents.

Fair comment, much depends on how you use the hooped bivi though. I like to be quite open too, hence the bivvy and relatively small tarp. Indeed, on this camp I left the head-end open throughout the camp and opted not to zip myself in. That meant I could still enjoy the freedom that comes with open bivvy camping. And it's that flexibility that I really like about the Dutch hooped bivvy in particular. It's big enough to accommodate me and my kit and if the weather does turn really bad then I have every confidence in it. Otherwise I just leave it open.
