Dam! Jason is a beast, the fact that he can not look in and see how you're sanding just by listening is insane! Breaks this down so a DIY car detailer enthusiast like myself can remove some of the fear of taking sand paper to my car if I needed to. Still scared though, need to find a busted up hood to work on.

Ok. Thanks. My guess is the ability to define scratches by grit comes with experience. To better understand what I’m dealing with I’ll often use my 10x Jeweller’s Loupe to get a good look at the finer characteristics of the scratch. It’s amazing what you can see.

Fantastic series Matt. I appreciate that you took the time and effort to do this. You're obviously a very knowledgeable guy, but your humility adds so much the increased level of learning offered by the boys at KXK. I do have one question for you: I'm still in the process of watching the series, but I wanted to ask you whether Jason provided any "tricks" or guidance (perhaps off-screen) regarding the initial assessment of the "grit level" of a scratch that you're preparing to remove. I know this is a very subjective process, but some rough guidelines would be handy, although I appreciate that having the skill set to do this boils down to experience. Thanks again.

That's a tricky one. You would want to measure the paint around it, then make an educated decision on how much of the scratch you want to remove. Another test is the finger nail test. If you can feel it with your nail, it's most like not coming out.

Haha I think back at what I've done with a bucket and various wet sandpaper with nothing more than folding it and using my fingers..And I both cringe and laugh.. Less is more. That is the BIG key here. That and we all wish an afternoon had 20 hours in it ;)

Great video. If you have the skill it truly takes paint to the next level. I'd be interested to know Jason's thoughts on ceramic coating vs a wet sanded car and high end wax.

You can get them for betwen $80 - $150, depending on the car and the condition.

Man this video is getting too technical... even tho I am a master wet sander, the presentation of the info is almost fear mongering.... Just get some water, add some soap put it in a spray bottle. (Prevents wet sand paper from clogging) I normally use 1500 (cross hatch sanding) then jump straight to 3000 trizact and then compound, and swirl if need. Boom done! For a mirror shine... 1500, 2000, 3000 trizact, 5000 trizact, compound, swirl. Cross hatch brings the layers down quicker. Sanding in one direction just to be able to buff it out easier is a good way to save product.. but a good detailer should be able to buff out 1500 scratches with compound alone. I have burned through the layer of clear many times. Only experience will give you the skill to become a master wet sander. Great video BTW! Just wanted to share some of my detailing knowledge.

I also got a connection with a auto body shop when they pull panels off of wrecked cars. Some of them have a little bit of wrinkles/damage to them, but they're free as they were headed into the recycling bin anyways.

I closed my restoration shop right before the scamdemic, after nearly 40 years of complete, ultra high-end paint and restoration work. When I started, guys were wet sanding lacquer paint with 600 paper dunked in a coffee can full of lacquer thinner. One of the last cars I completed before closing was a '67 F Body. After completely re skinning the entire body and redoing all the mechanicals, and painting, the owner had over $120,00.00 in it. Even with that level of insanity, I'm not sure even a guy like that would pay me to wet sand his entire car, completely flat, with a domino sized block. Nor, did I have 100 hours to wet sand. Maybe a Ridler car, but the vast majority of customers won't pay $15,000.00 to wet sand and buff an old Firebird.

Johnny Arakilian Well I guess you don’t hold yourself to high standards of paint correction because you can compound over contaminates but when those get those in your pads, you risk creating pig tails. Guess you just don’t know much about that kind of stuff.

Bro i work in a both shop that’s been done with this step I paint cars on the daily that’s why there’s different steps in buffing compound is gonna leave u some stuff and other steps correct those problems go get ur pigtail outta here pretty sure u heard that from a different video
