Week two of COVID-19 lockdown brings us a video all about spearfishing wetsuits and why smooth skin wetsuits are the ultimate in warmth and comfort. I go into detail about how wetsuits are made with various styles of neoprene and the pros & cons of each. Using thermal imaging we can see why a smooth skin suit is best for boat diving. It actually goes further than this. Scuba diving suits for example are made of non-compressible neoprene thar doesn’t squash much as the pressure goes up with depth. They’re less flexible than a surfing suit, which would be totally useless on a dive to 30 metres as it’d go from 5mm to 1mm 😃 Then there are triathlon suits, windsports, etc.

Nice. Here in Patagonia all the shellfish fishermen use smooth skin suits of 10mm+ they really mess them up because of their type of work and have to patch them constantly but they still go with those because the water is 11-10 celsius and they dive for around 3 hours

I was recently in Sydney, and spearfishers were raving about Salvimar Nebula. Inspected a few myself in Adreno and they look very durable. The guys in my club (sansouchi) says they are better than a Polosub. It looks best of both worlds. I am also using 3.5 and 5.5 smoothskin custom wetsuit from a greek manufacturer XXone (currently CT diving). Mines are smooth outside and lined inside. They are not very flexible and not thermally insulating as others but they are much forgiving especially the 5.5mm one. However, if I buy a wetsuit again, I will give a Nebula a go.

Best explanation of the different types of neoprene I've heard. As a SCUBA diver turned freediver, I can confirm that open cell suits are much warmer and more comfortable than traditional SCUBA wetsuits.

I wear a 9mm Wettie open cell suit. Nice and flexible. Definitely get the wind chill effect though but dries pretty fast.

If you are fishing at 20 meters and deeper, you should definitely use a smooth skinned diving suit if you do not want to get cold while going to the hunting area by boat. Wetsuits with a Licra or Jersey laminated outer surface do not dry out immediately when you get out of the water and will keep you cold in the wind when you go fast with the boat. Smooth skin clothes dries quickly and will not catch you cold in the wind. In deep dives, there is no friction effect and gives you freedom of movement. You just have to be extra gentle and careful when putting on and taking off.

I am using 3mm POLOSUB Forza 3 - sandwich architecture - with a middle cloth layer and have no problems, even I use it between rocks and reefs. You are probably referring to wetsuits where there's no middle cloth layer and only pure neoprene in one sheet - yes, those simpler wetsuits are more likely to rip. >

Good day my name is Junior from Jamaica I I like what you're doing and watch all of your videos I wish if I did have doors of opportunity like you guys as a diver I wish if I could on one of those lovely suit and beautiful speargun you guys use we have to make our own sometime because to buy a speargun in Jamaica if he's very expensive a speargun from 18000 to $25,000 for a speargun diving suit it is one of the hardest thing to get in Jamaica so we have to dive in our normal clothes you guys are the greatest you have everything at your fingertips and we wish Jamaica was like where you guys live you're doing a good work keep it up I love what you're doing peace out

Well, it's a slippery slope. So many creators loose their critical sense once they get sponsored and the channel becomes less genuine and trustworthy. I am not saying Daniel doesn't deserve some support cuz he certainly does. And maybe he can make it work. But I have unsubbed from plenty of channels that just became too conformist to put it nicely. E.g. most of the big camera channels are so afraid of saying anything critical now that when they do a review, you have to look for what's missing. For example, if they don't mention battery life at all it probably means it sucks... For someone like Daniel, it would perhaps make way more sense to get sponsored as part of a brand imaging strategy and it may not even be related to the spearing industry. Look at what Patagonia does in the marketing, doing amazing mini-docus on people whose values they like to be connected to. They may or may not wear Patagonia but everyone wins. Daniel could be sponsored by a company which cares about sustainability and perhaps the outdoors. Then he doesn't have to care to much about what gear he can and can not use and talk about...;)

I have the 7.5 forza tre and its stiff but still great. Went for the 7.5 smooth skin for my next jacket way better. I also have two 5.5 smooth skin and they are amazing. Polosub all the way. You just have to be a little bit careful taking them off. Get the jacket a bit wet and put your hood on and you're good to go.

I use the 7.5mm forza tre for pants but not jacket like you say, the smooth skin is much nicer. Always have to put the hood on, funny to watch people take suits off with them putting the hood on.

A few mates of mine used their 8.5mm smoothskin jackets from Norway in Tasmania. Said they were very comfortable.

Very useful, thank you. Always seems strange to me that with surface wind sports (I windsurf), it's getting increasingly difficult to find anything that is single-lined. Looks like a single lined 5mm would be my best bet for shorter shore-based stuff on the UK south coast.

Or go custom made. Snugg made me a single lined 6/5 for £360. Cheaper than many off the peg winter suits, and it fits me perfectly.

im from Finnmark in norway, we have been using between 7 and 9mm open cell with the nylon. just always thought the suits were stiff. i put a order in for a 7,5mm smoothskin and it has just arrived. can`t wait to try it :D

They are super flexible. When you’re taking them off make sure you wet the outside and keep the hood on. Will slip right off. Even better is doing it while in the water but not so fun In Finnmark 🤣

Thanks for the great video! For what water temperatures do you use the 5 and for which the 7 mil suits? Would you dive the mediterranean all year round with a 5? And do you think the forza tre also works for shore diving?

Certainly wouldn’t dive the med all year in a 5mm. You’d freeze in winter and spring. I mix the 5mm pants and 7mm top a bit. Forza tre is extremely robust. I’ve mostly shore dived this year and had no issues.

The Forze tre also stays wet for days, its heavy and doesnt have the best thermal retention. I do think that if you looking for a pure smooth skin suit it needs to be made form Heiwa SK. i use 3 and 5mm and have done so for several years. my 3mm easily lasts 3 years, never crushers, they just get old and hammered from the sun.

Never had issues diving in a normal surf wetsuit. Even in 50 degree water a 5/4 hooded winter suit is more than enough

Very informative video, straight to the point. Would what website do you use to order your wetsuits from? And do you think a 5 mil for Irish waters would be to low? Or just be safe and go for the 7?.

I think he orders them from www.polosub.com/eng/ which is Polosub's main website. If you only spearfish in summer you can go for a 5 mil, but if you want to spearfish in any other season, i would 100% go for a 7 mil. I live in Denmark so the weather and water temperature is almost the same as Irelands and i dive with a 7 mil.

I'd freeze in Ireland in a 5mm. I've only ever use a 5mm in the UK for my first season and was never comfortable.

Boat diving. 3 or 5mm forza tre. If you’re way up in the north a regular opencell suit would be better as it will cool you down in the boat instead.

I just use regular neoprene glue. The Omer stuff seems to work well for me.

Daniel, thank you. Can you make a quick video on how to look after carbon fins? My experience I have cressi carbon. changed foot pockets to smaller sise for warm water dive and they are so horrible after each dive side rails are coming off, which might lead to carbon to brake. I went to Thailand and just put them on super glue and now big dilemma what to do as I need to change foot pockets to bigger sise to dive with socks.

Might just be the brand of carbon fins. My DiveR's are worn down on the ends beyond recognition, they have always held up.

Welcome aboard. First trip I did to Norway I had a 7mm suit. Second I had a 9.5mm jacket and 7mm pants.

Good info there but must say I rarely use a wetsuit , if I do it is just a 2mm top half to keep me that little bit warmer when diving in the chilly water temp of 25c of far North Queensland in winter

I’ve used a 5mm jacket and 3mm pants in 24°C. All depends on the type of diving and extraneous factors.

Depends where in Asia, that covers so many countries and areas. Water temperature is more relevant than country in this instance.

You now have me thinking about getting a smootskin 9mm. My question, why no mention neoprene types? I destroy Yamamoto in less than a month in mexico and i'm looking for more compression resistance. Polosub does heiwa sk etc. It would be ice to have a material review, a no bs one by people diving cold water at depts... just a thought

As I have learned with a lot of manufacturing it changes batch to batch. One batch of Rob Allen shafts have been tough as nails and nearly impossible to bend, the next batch they are soft as butter. The same goes for neoprene manufacturing. I don't get too fussed up on it and rely on the wetsuit manufacturer to accept or reject batch samples of the neoprene.

@@DanielManni have been discussing with a few manufacturers.... yamamoto is strictly for casual or shallow diving. It's a great material that fits easily since it streaches so much. The problem starts when your average depht is below 23 meters. Yamamoto gets destroyed. It's not a bad batch. Same thing happens every time (i started using yamamoto in the 90s). The other problem is that material that compresses a lot lead to wild boyancy change, which is sort of dangerous if you dive deep all day. So do ask polosub why they sell heiwa and other stiffer stuff. I look forward to seeing a haha moment ;) that would be good content

Hey Daniel, love your videos and especially the coldwater ones! I've been saying this for several years, but I WILL be trying spearfishing here in our bay in Alaska for halibut. Rod and reel on our boat for years. Two questions - do you prefer a pee hole for 7.5mm pants and wearing with 9.5mm jacket? And, how do you deal with peeing in your suit after a very cold dive (2-10C) with cold outside temp? Thanks, just wondering about all the different behind the scenes stuff coldwater freedivers experience that aren't shown in the videos. Another video on this possibly?

Yes they do, if you add a suit to basket you can see the extras including the pee tube. You just pull the beaver tail to the side to pee. Mostly mine just sits to one side anyways.

Something I love about smoothskin is that they dry in a fraction of the time a lined wetsuit does. I'd much rather have the hassle of being gentle with the suit than having to spend hours drying a lined wetsuit.

Hey Daniel do you know much about Titanium Lined Neoprene wetsuits. Supposedly they don't need lubricant to put on and retain the heat? Not sure about the stretchy properties of the material either. Cheers

I've used them many years ago. I think Titanium is the colour rather than actual metal, could be wrong though. Yes they are easier to slip on without lube but they also add another later which makes them less flexible in my experience. You're going to get wet anyways so no problem for me to lube up!

Awasome video. I have tried manny smooth skinn wetsuits, but when i try to take It off the tale just rips. So i tried frivannsliv EVO 2 nordic. And thats maby the most comfortable thing i have tried on. Easy to take on and off. Its just 7mm, but it ceeps me worm all year round her in Norway. But anyway fantastic video ass normal. Cant wait to the next one ;-)
