Pigment Wetting
Minerals such as iron oxides are the main colorants in powder makeup and foundation.
If you want to turn your ordinary moisturizer into a tinted moisturizer you need to pre-disperse these mineral pigments in order to get a smooth and streaking free makeup color. We're going to use mortar & pestle and an emollient such as Octyldodecanol, Isoeicosane or Isododecane. Titanium Dioxide is added for coverage.
MakingCosmetics, Inc. has different Pigment Blends for easy use.
Pick a blend or two that best matches your skin tone.
Step 1: Add Pigment Blend to the mortar.
Step 2: Add Titanium Dioxide to the mortar.
Step 3: Blend these well until the color is uniform, a couple minutes at least.
Step 4: Add the emollient (mentioned above) and blend well until the color is uniform.
Transfer some of the pigment mixture to your moisturizer and blend well.
Add more color if needed or wet more pigments as in step 1-4.
Now you have a customized tinted moisturizer for a natural look!

Cream Base or Commercial Moisturizer

There is a great video demonstrating the dispersion analysis on an automated machine called TIDAS (made by Labman Automation). This analyses a grind gauge and makes the dispersion easy to see as it produces an image displaying all the particle data. It produces a rating automatically and removes the operator variation you often find between users in labs.

Thank you fir your inquiry. Most micas can be dispersed in water but they don’t dissolve. They may settle to the bottom of the container upon standing, which is normal for micas.

Glycerin may not work as well as a plant oil

Is this how you’d wet pigment prior to adding to a lipstick base ? Would a product with isododecane and acrylates / dimethicone copolymer be suitable for the wetting agent if used to make lipstick? Thank you for this helpful video. I’ve been wondering if I should put my pigment into a grinder first , but this process seems to make the grinder unnecessary. Is that correct? I just want a super smooth lipstick.

You can use emollients other than plant oils for wetting pigments including isododecane, acrylates or mineral oils. As for grinders, we recommend to use a food homogenizer (Hamilton makes good ones) for reducing the particle size of pigments. If possible buy one that has the motor not underneath the container but on the side. Pigments can easily clog the motor.

In the description box they name the three different emollients that you can use. So you can use any of the three liquids they named.

Pigments are generally used at very low concentrations (0.1-3%)

Hello , I want to make a mixing medium for loose pigments . Wetting the pigment with a mixing medium allows me to apply the loose pigments as eyeliner . I do have a list of ingredients but I’m not sure the ratios and qty that is safe . Can you please help with a recipe ? Isododecane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Polypropylsilsesquioxane, Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid.

What is the emollient for? Im planning on making a lip tint. Will this be ok to mix with water? I thought titanium oxide was sort of a “white” color oxide. I was thinking of mixing it with red oxide to get pink? Is that correct?

Oil is the better dispersing agent for pigments than water.

can you pls tell me how much powder to how much emolient needed? then how much of it do I add to my moisturizer? I got your beige colour set n not the pack.

Very little oil (emollient) is required. Generally, the ratio between pigments and oil is about 4-6 : 1
