Christianity in Kerala is as old as Christianity in Europe. It developed independently of any European influences until colonisation in the 15th century. So Christians in Kerala practice a very malayali version of the religion. Hence the saree. It's only recently taga grooms started wearing Suits. It used to kurtas and dhotis. Kerala Christian weddings even has mangalsutra and many other indian traditions.

But that's a stolen idea from Great sanatan culture, btw white saree implies she is going to be a widow.

Till 1960s most indian christian women wore white saree for wedding (white weddings are actually a relatively new concept christians all over the world wore coloured garments as per local traditions). My great great grandmothers n great grandmother wore normal coloured saree for church wedding then changed to red saree in accordance with local customs where grooms family gives wedding saree to wear and equivalent of bedai ceremony. Same with grandma n grandpa who wore dhoti. Even my mothers wore white saree for weddings then changed to red at home. We all follow the same practices of our ancestors- we even have equivalent haldi ceremony. General population till 1960s did not have a lot of money to afford even wear shits pants or gowns. My fathers could afford to buy pants only after 10th grade. Nowadays people have good jobs so they have wish to wear different style of garmets sarees lahengs gowns etc and enjoy important occasions. Till my grandmothers times wedding function did not include dance or servicing alcohol. All these things started may be in 1940 in metro cities mumbai kolkata bangalore then spread to other areas. Now people want to enjoy their weddings and parents also have some dreams.

In South widows wore simple silk or cotton (depending on income) dark coloured sarees brown grey green purple etc. Only difference is widows did not wear flowers on hair.They would even wear some simple gold chain. Even hindu widows were marraige thali in kerala. May be they avoid other grand jewelry depending on the locality. North Indian society is very harsh on women since the beginning I don't know what happiness people get from hurting their women. There Neighbours can't see others happiness. You should not put evil eyes on others wedding then something bad will happen in your weddings.
