The following video features various news and talent opens from WEWS in Cleveland from 1977 to present.
Most of the clips seen in the first six sets of intros shown include sponsorship plugs for Ohio Edison/The Illuminating Company, WEWS' main news sponsor (apparently) during the late 1970s and 1980s. This predates WKYC's incorporation of sponsorship plugs within its news opens starting in 2006.
Here's what you can see in this video:
(0:05-1:25) "TV-5 Eyewitness News" intros (1977-1980)
(1:25-1:51) "TV-5 Eyewitness News" 11 p.m. intro (1980-1983)
(1:51-2:47) "TV-5 Eyewitness News" evening intros (1983-1986)
(2:47-4:25) "TV-5 Eyewitness News" Live on 5 and 11 p.m. intros (1986-1990)
(4:25-4:59) "NewsChannel 5" evening intros (1990-1993)
(4:59-5:44) "NewsChannel 5" evening intros (1993-1995)
(5:44-6:22) "NewsChannel 5" 11 p.m. intro (1995-1998)
(6:22-6:39) "NewsChannel 5" noon intro (1998-2002)
(6:39-7:38) "NewsChannel 5" morning (including special intro for on-location newscast for MLB Spring Training) and 11 p.m. intros (2002-2007)
(7:38-8:50) "NewsChannel 5" noon and 11 p.m. intros (2007-2008)
(8:01-8:50) "NewsChannel 5" generic and 11 p.m. intros (2008-2009)
(8:50-9:29) "NewsChannel 5" noon, 6 and 10 p.m. intros (2009-2012)
(9:29-9:45) "NewsChannel 5" generic intro (2012-present)
The posting of this video is designed to facilitate criticism, commentary, scholarship, and research relating to the television broadcasting industry, and for purposes of historic preservation, consistent with the provisions set forth in Section 107 of Title 17, United States Code.

WEWS, channel 5, the ABC affiliate in Cleveland, is the first television station in the state of Ohio. Owned by the E.W. Scripps Company, WEWS is the sister station to fellow ABC affiliates WCPO in Cincinnati, OH, WXYZ in Detroit MI and WKBW in Buffalo NY. WEWS is also the sister station to independent station WMYD in Detroit MI.

Ernie Anderson is terrific on these opens starting at 1:32, just the way he pronounces EYEwitness News is great! A hometown boy that should have always been the announcer.

eyeontv David Mark also has a great voice and he did some of those 70's openers. I recall him doing a lot of work for Channel 5...

Minimal graphics in the old days. Graphics have become increasingly complicated and frantic, like someone playing video games all over the show you're trying to watch.

FACT: The roof used in the first set of opens is really small and news stations used this in the 70s, if you search WEWS Studio A you'll see how big the roof actually is

You are correct. I was a college student back in the late 70s and worked on the production crew at WEWS during a couple of summer and holiday vacations. The expensive looking “ceiling” was actually nothing more than a 3x3 foot piece of wood and plastic that was designed to look like it covered the entire studio and fit perfectly against the walls. It actually weighed no more than 15 pounds and was suspended from the true studio ceiling by a chain and pulley. The actual studio ceiling was 20 feet higher and studded with myriads of lights and beams. Just prior to the news opening shot, a member of the production crew would lower the “ceiling” down to a position directly above and in front of the camera (Camera #1). The camera operator would adjust the camera so it looked like a perfect fit. Immediately after the opening shot, the Show Director would cut to Camera #2 which would get a tight shot of Dave Patterson since he always opened the news with the first story. Camera #1 would quickly move about 15 feet to the right, next to Camera #2, and get a tight shot of Ted Henry, who would take the second news story. While Camera #1 was moving, a member of the production crew (sometimes me) would quickly pull the “ceiling” up and out of the way so the cameras could move freely.

I still miss Nev Chandler to this day. Moreso as the voice of the Browns of course but he was a great guy and a top notch sports caster.

I wish Channel 5 had kept the Circle 5 logo. Their sister station, NBC affiliate WPTV in West Palm Beach, still uses it. Their current logo looks like a drunk toddler fired up Photoshop and played with it for about ten minutes, then handed it to the station to use.
