Thank you for all the memories John. Top 3 best of all calls and you can debate all you want 1.) Bernie’s walk off HR game 1 of 96’ ALCS 2.) Tino’s game tying HR game 4 of 01’ World Series 3.) O’niell’s game ending catch in game 5 of 96’ World Series

Agreed on all the calls. And they were all memorable. Though Paulie’s Game 5 catch in the ‘96 WS on Polonia’s drive to RF in Atlanta was not game-ending. But boy, was it powerful! That was my first WS with our Yankees and so amazing. John will be missed.

I was 16 1/2 years old listening to the game on a small radio with aluminum foil on the end of the antenna. Yankees down by one run, bottom of the ninth. Ricky Henderson walked, and Don Mattingly hit a walk-off home run. First time I heard John Sterling's home run call. I have never stopped listening since, until now. Thank you, John, for an illustrious career. I hope you have a peaceful retirement. So many of us will miss you dearly.

On a hot July night in 1989 I had the game on in my upstairs bedroom while trying to sleep. The Yankees weren't good. It was stifling(no AC). I was 17 years old and really down in the dumps. All kinds of teen troubles were ratting around my brain. Then Sterling called a three run come from behind game winning( we didn't call them walk offs back then) blast by Jessie Barfield and it gave me a little hope. Today is a sad day. I'm going to miss you in the booth John.

I suppose that I'm in the minority that prioritized accurate and timely calls over self promotion. I tune into a ballgame to follow the players, not to hear the announcer make the show about him and his schtick. Still, I tip my hat to his years of commitment to the organization and wish him well in his retirement.

Seems very strange that he would choose to retire this way out of the clear blue sky and immediately. All the reasons why he is retiring could have been made at the end of last season or any previous year. You mean just doing home games now is not good for him? Why start 2 weeks of this season and then suddenly retire immediately? Something seems fishy about this.
@jefflewis4
@jefflewis4 Ай бұрын
Because he's putting on a brave face. He didn't want to retire. He was forced to by health reasons. After the Houston Arizona trip he was exhausted ,he realized he can't do it anymore. The Yanks did offer to let him do just home games, but he turned that down. I think after being off all winter a, when the regular season grind started up after spring training his body told him just can't handle it anymore.
