@@dukedashwolfgg2283 The irony though is that the whales they're "protecting" aren't endangered in the slightest. Of the three species the Japanese take, the Fin whale is the most endangered being classified as vulnerable, or 3 out of 7 on the conservation scale. The other species, the Humpback and Minke whales aren't endangered whatsoever. The numbers of whales taken are also very low and really don't amount to much year over year. If we're talking about the oceans there are far more pressing concerns than Japanese whaling. Besides, it's obvious their tactics don't work. The Japanese are still whaling and Sea Shepherd aren't targeting them anymore. Activism is dumb, it doesn't bring people around to your side, all it does is make them go home thinking they're even more in the right. Activism is more about the activists than whatever cause they're supposedly championing. It's a way for some people to feel accepted and a way for others to assuage their guilt.

The Faroese are still torturing thousands of pilot whales every year. The creatures of the Galapagos islands still need protection. The Great Barrier Reef still needs protection. The killing of the ocean's sharks still needs to be ended. The fight never ends: www.seashepherd.org/get-involved/

It's usually the Asians, because their cultures STILL to this day believe certain animal body parts have magic powers in them that'll make men stronger or bigger or more fertile, like rhino horns and shark fins (As if they need greater fertility! Asia has the most horrendously overpopulated countries in the world!) Whether it works or not (NOT), they know they can keep selling these things for unbelievable profit...

ATS Artilce 1 states: "area to be used for peaceful purposes only; military activity, such as weapons testing, is prohibited, but military personnel and equipment may be used for scientific research or any other peaceful purpose" That clearly does not ban military weapons in the Antarctic. Weapons can be there, they just can't be used for testing and such. Whaling is not illegal on an international scale. Yes, some countries have outlawed it in their waters. Sea Shepherd is a marine conservation organizations. They focus on SEA stuff. There are many more organizations advocating for human farm animal treatment than marine conservation. Speaking of springing traps... You saw what happened on episode: "BATTLE STATIONS". The whalers threw a spear at the Sea Shepherds in an attempt to either hurt someone or puncture the inflatable and send everyone into the freezing ocean. The Shepherds have never tried to harm any of them like that. They were NOT defending themselves either. They were safe up in their big steel ship.

It's called "direct action"! Not like other organizations that collect donation and do nothing. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society hits where it hurts. As we all know by now, Whales are very susceptible to toxins (like mercury). Well, when the japanese kill a whale, the Shepherds use the legally harmless "stink bombs" of butyric acid to taint the meat so the whalers can't profit from it. They also block captured whales from being brought aboard by the harpoon ships and processed. They also block the whalers from connecting with re-fuel ships, to hinder their operations. So now whalers will have spent the costs of fuel, salaries for their men, food & supplies, whatever licenses, and bribes... and have little or nothing to show for it but bankruptcy. This, PLUS the ever-continuing court battles, will hopefully bring it all to a permanent end eventually! For those who don't know, the japanese government started a branch in 1987 they named "The Institute of Cetacean Research". They kill and immediately slaughter hundreds of whales every year while claiming they need that many for scientific research. The whales are cut up and boxed (with labels) minutes after being caught. Research? What research?

SJ, the whalers aren't whaling in Australian sovereign waters or the Aussie government would intervene. There is a "claim" that the Aussies made for a huge are of water around Antarctica that they call the "Australian Whale Sanctuary", but it is not their territory and no international body recognizes it as such. It would be the same if the U.S. "claimed" the Pacific ocean as the "American Lobster Sanctuary". There's no legal ground for it at all.

The SS have done some radical things (not shown or mentioned in this show) but I think that they should be praised for taking such lengths in fighting for what they believe in.

@info145 Regarding the last line of your comment, going onto a boat to willingly pirate other boats is not a "charity" or "donation", it is a "crime". If you try to make the argument that international law says they cannot kill whales but they do it anyway, I will simply point out that there has been a legal exception to that law made for Japan, if you wish to protest on the grounds that the law is wrong I have no problem with that. As of right now the law stands.

DR. DAVID CARON: "Now it's my understanding that this World Charter for Nature has been cited by Sea Shepherds as a basis for their authority, to undertake their actions. And that is simply not at all in that charter. The charter talks about duties on states. It does not say anything about who may enforce them. That is the classic taking the law into your own hands. And there is no basis - no basis at all - in the World Charter for Nature for their doing so."

@branahawk discussions are fun, civil or not. it teaches you a lot about yourself and others. trying to be all hats and mustache about it is fine for when you're face to face with the person and ought to be respectful. We are emotional and aggressive beings after all.
