WHALE WATCHING IN THE AZORES

The Whale Watching season on Pico Island starts in March and ends in November. In total there are 29 different species of whales and dolphins which have been sighted here in the Azores. Per trip the average is between 2-3 different species. Four different species of dolphins and the female sperm whales are resident here and therefore can be seen all year around, if you are lucky. Blue whales, Fin whales and Humpback whales are migratory and passing by the islands during springtime. The weather conditions in spring can be quite rough and that´s why this year the boats were only able to go out not even 10 times so far. So I was very lucky to have experienced my first whales of this season in sunny and calm conditions and I hope you enjoy the glimpse into the azorean ocean world.

Thanks for the invitation to view the Azores from the sea! I loved the trip and I am now inspired to go either to Downtown Kona or maybe right here in Keauhou Bay to join with the tourists as they go out Whale Watching… not so much to watch the whales, which we can see very well from our residence , but rather to look back and view our island from the ocean as your video depicts Pico. I have been waiting for the video since you said you might put together an informative video of Whale Watching in the Azores--you delivered and I enjoyed- big time! Thanks for doing it Rahel--sharing one with one of the good places--with one of the good people!

Hello Rahel, Thank you for this wonderful video. We get spoiled by being shown all kinds of whales up close and we demand and expect that. But, I really, really love what you said to give them space and to respect them and their space. You are so right. Thank you for taking us on the authentic whale watch in Azores. What an awesome experience. Thank you. I think that when you were a whale guide, you did an amazing job because you respected these animals and honored their right to be here. I am sorry that this beautiful world, the Azores, was once and not that long ago, a place where whales were killed brutally and for what? I cringe thinking about that. And, I am so glad that this is changing here on Azores and also in Africa and other places around the world. This is one thing I am glad about living in the 21st century. We still have a long way to go, but things are changing in how we treat the earth and its native inhabitants, our brothers and sisters, the animals. Hugs, Eve

Thank you for appreciating the authentic and gentle approach of whale watching. Sperm whales were once killed here in the Azores mainly because of the oil which these whales have in their heads. It was used to make oil for lamps and other purposes. It breaks my heart to know that there are still places where they hunt whales to this day. This really needs to stop. Animal cruelty in general.
