Lyrics
Ah, ha, ha
Oh-oh, yeah
'Til you work
Somebody told me
"Boy, everything she wants is everything she sees"
I guess I must have loved you
Because I said you were the perfect girl for me
Baby, and now we're six months older
And everything you want, and everything you see
Is out of reach, not good enough
I don't know what the hell you want from me, oh
Uh-huh, uh-huh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Ah-ha, ah-ha, doo-doo-doo
La, la, la, la, la
Uh-huh, uh-huh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Ah-ha, ah-ha, doo-doo-doo
La, la, la, la, la
Somebody tell me, oh
Won't you tell me?
Why I work so hard for you
Give you money
Work to give you money (oh)
Some people work for a living
Some people work for fun
Girl, I just work for you
They told me marriage was a give-and-take
Well, you've shown me you can take, you've got some giving to do
And now you tell me that you're having my baby
I'll tell you that I'm happy if you want me to
But one step further and my back will break
If my best isn't good enough, then how can it be good enough for two?
Uh-huh, uh-huh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Ah-ha, ah-ha, doo-doo-doo
I can't work any harder than I do (la, la, la, la, la)
Uh-huh, uh-huh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Ah-ha, ah-ha, doo-doo-doo
La, la, la, la, la
Somebody tell me, oh
Won't you tell me?
Why I work so hard for you
Give you money (oh)
Work to give you money (oh)
Aw, why do I do the things I do?
Tell you if I knew
My god, I don't even think that I love you (la, la, la, la, la)
Won't you tell me?
Give you money
Work to give you money (oh-ah)
Ah, oh, yeah
Tell me
Tell me
How could you settle for a boy like me
When all I could see was the end of the week?
All the things we sign, and the things we buy
Ain't gonna keep us together, it's just a matter of time
My situation never changes walking in and out of that door
Like a stranger for the wages
I give you all, you say you want more
And all I could see was the end of the week
All the things we sign, and the things we buy
Ain't gonna keep us together
Girl, it's just a matter of time
Work, work
Work, work
La, la, la, la, la (just a matter of)
Uh-huh, uh-huh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Ah-ha, ah-ha, doo-doo-doo
La, la, la, la, la
Somebody tell me, oh
Won't you tell me? (Somebody)
Why I work so hard for you
Give you money (oh)
Work to give you money (oh)
Somebody tell me, whoa-oh
Won't you tell me?
Why I work so hard for you
Give you money (oh)
Work to give you money (oh)
Somebody tell me
Won't you tell me? (Oh, please tell me...)
Why I do the things that I do
Give you money
Work to give you money (oh)

When I was ten years old, I thought this was the best Wham song. In my mid 20s, I still thought this was the best Wham song. In my late 30s, I remained confident that this was the best Wham song. Closing in on 50 years old, nothing has changed... This is still the best Wham song! (Among many great ones...)

53 year old black male checking in. Back in the mid ‘80s pop music was what was popular, SHOCKER !! And Hip-Hop for the masses was at its birth. And in an era where MTV ruled !! And to top it off, cable TV was at its early stages. My family went from 5 channels on an antenna to more than I could absorb. I loved it, as well as my siblings. Great memories, but I digress. When I first saw a WHAM videos its was wake me up. We all knew that George was gay. This was when calling someone a f*ggot wasn’t that much out of line. But his sexuality, like boy George, didn’t matter….Because they are talented and true Artist. And if you think that Faith isn’t one of the greatest albums you’re mad. He made an impact and is a 1 of 1. Will always appreciate you sir !

there were tons of shitty artists and bands and groups that made music in the 80s lul. just like the ones today, there are still good bands and music today. people just focus on the main mainstream shit, because it's uninspired and people love drama without really doing much work or anything to truly convince themselves that what they're saying is 100% correct B)

yes there's always been a ton of shitty artists in the radio...but the ratio of decent ones seems to be incredibly reduced nowadays...its basically down to Kendrick and Beyoncé, the rest of the radio staples are shit

so effing true....master of pop songwriting at an extremely young age ..only 21 here....wrote knew you were waiting at 22 and managed at that age to snag Aretha Franklin..George was dazzlingly talented...unfortunately his demons, his ability to disclose his sexuality, and the treatment from the media led to his downfall and his talent although still amazing definitely was not as sharp as his early days..I like everything he did for the most part , but there was a noticeable drop off when he was going 100 mph......we are all human, but in his prime he was able to be in the conversation with the brightest pop stars of the 80s...he wrote his stuff too which is that much more impressive. one of my alltime favorite artists.

@Gene Connor he's underrated to people of this generation. Kids these days only know of Michael Jackson, Elvis , prince, the Beatles, Queen etc but WHAM or George Michael u ask them they won't know. You can show me how many awards they got cause I already know everything about WHAM and so many other artists. the person who commented before wasn't even talking trash about them, Ive been around so many random people or places and no one would know any older artists only some like I named in the beginning

yep! what a sound it had coming over the radio! so fresh, so exciting! what a pop rock sensation he was! and to think he wrote, produced, and sang nearly every single song he released - and if he didn't write it, he performed it better (like Was Not Was' Where Did Your Heart Go?, Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me, and, Rufus Wainright's Going to a Town)

Michael whipped this off one night on a synth and drum program, wrote up some unusually serious lyrics, and bam (or, Wham!), another #1 hit. The best song of the Wham! era, certainly. Ya know, we didn't take this guy too seriously back then, and yet one of the better pop song writers of the 20th century was under our radar. Amazing. Sorry he died so young. 53 is young, and most of us have cardiomyopathy in our 50s. But for the grace of god go the rest of us. This guy, who wrote some of the music to my youth, was only 5 years older than me, and now I'm as old as he was when he died. Time is a river. But good music is eternal.

It's still so difficult to listen and watch his videos, i can't let him go. I was born in 76 so i grew up with Wham, with posters of them on me bedroom wall. He had always been an ever present in my life in child & adulthood, thought i had time to eventually be able to see him in concert. This song describes a traumatic relationship where she made me feel that my best was not good enough and i only existed to please her. Thank God i escaped it. George's music & lyrics have always felt like i had a friend i was walking through life with. 5:08 always gets me, the hip dance with the lady dancer just speaks to what George was, the absolute joy on her face is just priceless.
