It may be useful for business travelers, maybe specially useful. Assuming this is not an ad for Qantas or anything, and realizing I don’t know how the other passengers felt, the reporter said he felt pretty good after a long flight. If they can ultimately find useful information from these tests, they can definitely apply whatever findings they do on how to deal with such extreme jet lags to business travelers who have a tight schedule or a meeting right after landing for some reason. Also Qantas is testing on 6 frequent fliers, and these don’t tend to be your average Joe.

LON-SYD non-stop will be amazing, but not sure why the media is making the 19-hour Qantas flight sound so exotic when Singapore Airlines is flying SQ21 from EWR-SIN daily right now at 18.5+ hours. I don't think the extra 30 minutes makes much difference to jet lag and passenger endurance/comfort.

I have completely eliminated the 'jet lag' problem at least for myself. I have been flying internationally since 1980 These days I regularly fly between Asia, USA and the UK. I am not sure that the exhaustion is due to time differencies. Try sitting up at home in an uncomfortable chair unable to move your legs and often told you cannot get out of your seat, for 10 hours. You might experience the same 'jet lag' symptoms after that, in fact it would be almost torture to try it. I found that a lot of the problem was due to lack of sleep. A USA to Asia trip can mean being up or on the plane over 30 hours. Try going without proper sleep for 24 hours or more, even a moderate 5 hour flight means being awake and busy before and after the flight, and getting tired even without the flight A luxury solution I have these days is to be able to take an afternoon nap. This puts me into two 12 hour cycles instead of one 24 hour cycle. When I get to the US which is about 12 hour out from Asia, I just extend the nap to become the night sleep and reduce the what was the night sleep to a nap. Another luxury solution is I refuse now to fly economy any longer than a couple of hours. The lay flat business class seats are lovely. I enjoy the pampering by the service to but it isn't why I fly business its being able to sleep properly. That is how I can arrive after a flight and not feel any problems at all.

J R plenty of economy passengers fly up to 17.5 hours at the moment. And most think it’s much better than a layover. The extra 2 hours flight time isn’t going to reduce the amount of economy passengers to zero. They’ve done lots of market research on this and have said that there is market demand for economy travel, as well as premium, business and first. You’re likely not in the target market for this sort of flight. That’s fine. There are other options for you. But as long as the plane is 90% full every day with people who actually prefer this, Qantas won’t go chasing your business

For the WSJ writer: This is great stuff for sure, and Qantas deserves to be commended for paying attention to safety and passenger considerations on these (commercially) unprecedented flights. To complement your reporting, it's worth noting the US Air Force has been systematically studying and doing (very) long-duration flying for decades, and there's quite a body of knowledge out there about sleep/rest cycles, crew alertness, inflight nutrition & hydrations, preparation, recovery, and the like. I am so proud of our national airline, Qantas. The most profitable airline in the world. The oldest commercial airline in the world (100 years in 2020). The only airline in the world to have never crashed an aircraft and now it will be the first airline in the world to fly 20 hours non-stop without destroying passengers or aircrew. It pays its cabin crew and pilots really well, it still does its heavy maintenence after a disasterous experiment with the Phillippines a few years ago. So we Australian who fly to the US, Canada and direct to Chile regularly, 14+ hours anyway, 20 is just a bit more. But for those with a bit of time, a stop in Hawaii or New Zealand is always nice. I'd much prefer that.

I spent 17 of my 41 years in that industry flying long-haul flights, and I find it interesting that they didn't talk about the radiation health concerns of flying that long at those flight levels. It's a fact that in some countries long-haul flight crews are considered "radiation" workers, must wear exposure badges and can be limited to how many of those flights they can take. The increase in radiation exposure as you increase altitude is not linear. The difference in exposure between a flight a 31,000 feet as compared to 41,000 feet is very significant! Also, it's a bit comical having only 50 people on that "test" flight - plenty of room to move around. How easy do you think it's going to be getting 300 passengers to stand up and do the Macarena?

In my career in the Military I have flown to the Far East, and Europe many times and to the Middle East once. Jet Lag? We had no time for jet lag; once we deplaned and transported to our assembly area we got down to the business we came for. As for our transportation for our trip, if it was Military we Sardine packed. If it was commercial charter the seating was no leg room for anyone over 5 foot 10 inch. Sleep in flight was the recommended way to pass the time because we would be up and on duty for up to thirty hours after arrival. The longest flight was 23 hours from the West coast USA to Vietnam with two refueling stops and no deplaning, no walking about on board. Ah! To have the luxury of jet lag.

I'm a student who studies in New York and lives in Sydney so I've made this trip almost a dozen times. A few things I have to say - Firstly, the people in this video were seated in business class, and therefore had the luxury of comfort, which makes it easier to sleep. You also don't have to be awoken by anyone who needs to use the bathroom, and you're able to lean your seat back more, which is impossible in economy. Secondly, not everyone has the luxury to afford direct flights, and some people need to book layovers in multiple countries just so they can reduce their fare price. I've been to Japan and New Zealand multiple times, and once even had the option to go through Hawaii for a total 35+ hour trip time (which I did not select). Usually I'll need at least 2-3 layovers, one before LAX/SFO and one after, before Newark/LGA/JFK, which can last anywhere from 2-6 hours. My worst trip was from New York to Sydney a couple years ago, and due to bad weather conditions, the first flight was delayed by a couple of hours, and so I missed the layover (which I had accounted for). They made me stay in the airport for another 24 hours to catch the next flight, so I had to uncomfortably and embarrassingly live and sleep on the chairs in the waiting areas, and try and survive off the expensive airport food. The worst part of this was that the next flight out was on the night of the 24th of December, and due to how international time zones work, I landed on the 26th of December in Sydney. I literally did not experience Christmas at all that year.

Premium economy would be hard, but doable. Economy class on the Qantas Dreamliners, frankly, would be brutal. I've done London to Sydney via Singapore in economy, and it takes you out for days. If I work on it I can be significantly better in one week. 1st I begin taking melatonin coinciding with the new time, a few days before the flight. We arrive late in the day, and being sleep deprived, I manage to sleep the first night. It is extra helpful to sleep in a room with a temperature below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. During the day for at least the first week, I wake when the sun goes up and get outside. Exercise really helps especially exercise in daylight. Of course I continue taking melatonin. Reading before going to bed also helps. Alcohol, especially before going to bed does not help at all. Caffeine or caffeinated drinks, several hours before bedtime, do not help. Do not take naps unless that was what you were used to before. If you feel the need, it is better to get outside and go for a walk.

I really hope these flights don't become the norm. They use waaaay more fule than a normal 1 stop flight, because you have to carry a lot of extra fuel. And to carry that extra fuel you have to use extra fuel. I think you get my point..

This is why I believe we need a Concorde again. SST is a great way to reduce these things and when a large portion of the flight would be over the ocean, travelling over Mach 2 would be great in reducing jet lag and time spent on the plane in general.

What time were your flights? Jet lag impacts you hardest when you start out tired. For me, if the fight starts out in the morning or just after I get up, I feel good for hours and can handle the location and time change when I arrive. If it's a night flight, it's hard to sleep on the plane, my clock is messed up the entire flight, and when I arrive in different timezone and location, it's all the worse. It can take me a week to adjust.

19 hours 16 minutes is very long but there are already non stop flight over 17 hours and from what I heard about this flight is that only had 17 minutes of fuel remaining. The plane also had only a handful of passengers and no baggage so this flight will not be possible with a normal weighted airplane. Still an amazing achievement.

If they end up doing this, it will probably be similar to Singapore's nonstop to/from Newark, where there's only business and premium economy. It will lead to a lighter load making the flight possible, but also because it'll mainly be business travelers who will spend the extra money to save the time. Us leisure passengers would rather book cheaper flights with a layover in California or Dubai.

Boilermaker no, their Perth to London service is on a standart lay out plane yet passangers are satisfied
@JuanWayTrips
@JuanWayTrips 4 жыл бұрын
@@pilotjonas8 I know that, but that's "only" the 3rd longest flight. Singapore to Newark is the longest flight at the moment and adopted the all premium configuration for that reason. JFK-SYD would be 900 miles more than the Perth route, and Sydney to London would be 1,500 miles more than the Perth route as well. At that point, extra weight needs to be lost in order to make the flight viable.
