A wacky weekend in Wiltshire and Hampshire with new year ticks, lifers, ponies, bad bird identification, a pagan druid and a flat tyre!

We have a species of bustard here in Australia. I've seen them in the desert, elusive & very well camoflauged. Sometimes called a " bush turkey".

They used to have a bustard re-breeding project on the ranges at porton down(government establishment on edge of salisbury plain),in the early 70's! I lived there as a youngster, and had the privilege of seeing lots of these rare birds all in one place! I'm not sure how successful the project was,but having watched your video,it's good to hear they're still surviving on salisbury plain!👍

videos are always quality, I've been trying my best to keep up with your year tally however I've fallen behind a bit to 166 due to uni work. Hoping to catch up a little over the summer in Cornwall. Happy Birding!!!

My goodness, what troopers you are, heading off feeling poorly, but still smiling despite everything. What a disappointment that the battery went flat whilst filming the kingfisher! The bustards were fantastic, well spotted! Then a late night being tired before you could all retire as the van needed to be re-tyred! Hopefully the lay in revitalised you all to enjoy the rest of the trip. I hope that you are all fully recovered now!

There's a bustard called Gertrude that hangs about at Stonehenge being fed by tourists. Probably a captive bred bird that was a bit too habituated to people. I'm not sure if she still counts as wild now though.

Don't believe any of them do, the general consensus is that the group are not self sufficient.

I live on the edge of The New Forest & have noticed over the last 10yrs or so the wildlife has diminished considerably. I go to Eyeworth pond @ Fritham & rarely see much there now.

Glad you enjoyed Wilts & the New Forest. Willow Tit does not occur in the New Forest where Marsh Tit is locally common. There are a few relict populations of WIllow Tit in Devon, Cornwall, Wiltshire & eastern Hampshire but these are unlikely to be seen without detailed local knowledge; and even these are dying out rapidly! They used to occur at Pennington Flash near Manchester coming to bird feeders in front of the "bunting" hide.

I’m off to Dorset for a week in a short while and I’m hoping to have a look around for Bustards on the way. Any ideas whereabouts roughly to go on Salisbury Plain?
