2023 will be remembered as Israel’s year of horrors. It began with deep societal polarization, mass protests, and anxiety about the future of Israeli democracy, following the new Netanyahu government’s plan to weaken judicial independence. It ended with the most devastating terrorist attack in Israel’s history and a war that is now being fought on multiple fronts.
In this webinar, Amichai Magen, FSI's visiting fellow in Israel Studies, is joined by one of Israel’s leading analysts, Haviv Rettig Gur, to take stock of 2023 and seek to ascertain what awaits Israel in 2024.
Introduction has been edited to omit Zoom webinar Q&A instructions and other housekeeping.

It is so refreshing to hear Haviv speak because most of what I hear is uneducated venting from both sides and I want to learn from thoughtful and factual people.

Thank you for this facinating information. Such in depth information is never being published in Germany. I think nobody is interested.

Wonderful explanation of a very complicated, multilayered situation Haviv Gur has a power of synthesis the likes of which are seldom equaled. This lecture needs to be heard time and again, by everyone willing to understand hat is happening in the Middle East right under our noses, and consequently can happen to these same noses if we don't eake up.

I hope the Biden admin is aware of what Mr. Gur says about Saudi-Arabia being ready and willing to go into Gaza after the destruction of the Hamas infrastructure and fighters - and lead a deradicalization process ... and thus a pathway to Palestinian statehood. (from about 46 minutes 50 seconds) ....

Old Oslo worldview. 1. Middle eastern and European Jews regularly intermarry. Differences are more new immigrants vs established. 2. Judicial reform was to create a balance of power. It is currently in the hands of the old elite that also control media but losing “power” due to demographics and not ideology. 3. The war unified Israeli society since before Oslo. 4. Saudi is reeling from its youth going ISIS. The current king is secular. This is a destabilizing force that will either moderate the country….LOL… or will swing back the pendulum strongly. 5. Israel is in need of a new weapons supplier. It might not be able to rely on the US (as it did the French or Czechs) as the saying goes better be an enemy of the US than its friend. The US appeases its enemies and back stabs its friends. 6. The world economy is going down because the multiculturalism was nothing but weakening local society while importing a hostile civilization. Europe has no kids, men are weak, and imported ISIS.

What, you mean the way soldiers post leaflets, make mobile phone calls, go door to door to warn civilians that they are about to attack, so the people need to escape? Is that the conduct you're referring to?

Given Israel’s confederacy of tribes, I wonder why he doesn’t propose such a Palestinian government.

@@MehWhatever99 You know what? I have no idea. I think I was commenting while on gabapentin. That being said, I think we should consider establishing very local governance based on clans, plus a council of clan leaders to deal with state-wide issues. Demilitarized of course. Theres a good chance we could produce a slew of people capable of good governance. What have we got to lose? Anyway, there’s an Arab Israeli activist, whose name I can’t remember, who is a big proponent of this approach.

They have a government, which they freely voted for. Its name is Hamas.

First of all a war is between 2 armies! Gaza has never known a day of freedom!
@maltija1

No, because its government, Hamas, never freed the people. But in fact they have had Gaza all to themselves since 2005. They have their own Palestinian passports, they have a large coastline, houses, shops, mosques, schools, hospitals, international humanitarian aid for all these years...how can you say they are not free?

Are thousands of men invading a neighbouring state and attacking civilians, not an army? The only reason that army does not wear a uniform is so that it can hide among and behind its civilians, to keep safe.

Thousands of men, in or out of uniform, invading a country, form an army. So there are two armies.
