Here's where you can try Exponentially Bounded Thermos by Amin Khalek: app.crackingth...
Normal sudoku rules apply. Normal thermo rules DO NOT apply. Each thermo consists of at least two numbers (each possibly multi-digit, with the unit digit towards the tip) that increase - at least doubling and at most tripling each time. Cells with an arrow pointing to an adjacent thermo cell must indicate how many digits the adjacent number on the thermo has. In cages, digits must sum to the clue in the top left corner of the cage.

38:00 mistake. it must go 26 or higher. he got lucky.
@air_rock

I wouldn't say he got "lucky", only that he didn't do the math at that point. Lucky to me implies he put in a correct number into a cell using flawed logic. He got "lucky" later do to not including the possibility of being 27 or 26.
@tabris1135
@tabris1135 6 ай бұрын
@@air_rock which means he got lucky. He made a wrong deduction, and because the puzzles solution didn't involve a 7 in that slot, that was luck.
@stupidas9466

And if that mistake didn’t just "happen" to work out, imagine if it was 15 entered numbers with 70 pencil marks later when he realized there was a mistake "somewhere" and had to try and find out where it was! Mark is fantastic in backtracking but in a puzzle like this it definitely would not be easy.

Not that lucky. Im quite sure even if it came to bite him in the ass, he wouldve found the mistake in 5 minutes. Saying he got lucky implies he got something out of it, and the only thing he really got was 5-10 minutes faster time. Dont really see the worth in that as it was already over half an hour. Yeah he won the lottery but for what, 10 quid?

@@air_rock There's a period between those two statements which means they are separate. They show up in the same comment which means they are related. Sounds exactly like what you said.

The rule that each new segment of a longer length has to start with 1 or 2 is strongly related to "Benford's Law" for those who have heard of that.

Great solve! Very interesting rule set. There was one small mistake where in R3C1 you said you needed at most 26 instead of at least 26 but it wound up working out.

Re: yesterday's puzzle, I thought your explanation of the rules was perfectly fine. I often try the puzzles before watching the video at all, and I think it might be those of us who tried it before hearing your version of the rules who got confused. That's what ended up happening with me; I didn't grok the rules, went back and watched until the rules explanation, then understanding it went back and did the puzzle again.

Completely wrong pencil markings there except the 6. The bulb end has 13, so 6 is the MINIMUM not the maximum. Really lucky that 6 ended up being the right one (and not 7).

I finished in 88 minutes. The ruleset was not very well designed in its explanation. I thought the rules could be interpreted as being the thermo could stop making doubled/tripled numbers after two number values were achieved. So, on a 4 line thermo, it could go 1 cell, 2 cell that is between doubled/tripled, and another single cell that has no bearing. It would have been better to say that thermo rules apply, but that some may be multidigit and must be between doubled/tripled. As for the arrow, I interpreted it as the arrow cell saying how many times the digit it points to appears on that thermo. I couldn't even begin since I didn't understand the rules. Watching the start of the solve in the video cleared things up massively. I think with instructions that are complexly worded like this should include a smaller example solution created by the constructor to dispel any confusion. Beyond that, I did enjoy the puzzle, so I guess this video can be used as a reference in future puzzles with similar rules. Confusingly worded rules, but Great Puzzle!

Then wondered if the other way would lead to another solution turna out u can prove there is none...or rather I hope it's correct

R3C1 isn't pencil marked correctly. You had it going up to 26. It must be at least 26. So it's 26 or 27. (8/9 pair already in the column at that time)

Such puzzles are exactly why I hate rules told by Mark. I started solving it, thinking that numbers should either double or tripple on the lines, and it just didn't work. By the moment I realized my mistake I already seen most of the puzzle solving. It's not that hard to just visualize the rules, like Simon does, giving examples of what's possible and what's not, while actually typing the digits. But it'd help alot.

Oh silly me - I assumed that the little arrows would point to the beginning of the thermo numbers...19.08 1, 2, 4, 8 or 9. 9?? Because 2 x 4 = 9, obviously...It also appears that2 and 5 can be consecutive numbers on a thermo!!! What evil contorted mind thought this lot up? Disliked. My opinion.

It says in the rules that the next number is from twice to triple the previous number. So for example, after 4, you can have 8-12 (and at 19:08, it's a single digit, so only 8 or 9).

The rules don’t say exactly a multiple of 2. 9 divide by 4 is between 2 and 3 so it is possible.
