Wow, painting under scrutiny is not easy, overcoming the fear of the clean page can be daunting. So Dom's painting was bravely approached. A piece he can be proud of. I would love to see more of his creative journey.

First, let me say that your hair looks FABULOUS!! Second, this video showcases exactly why you are such a great instructor! I also appreciate Dom's efforts, (which are amazing for a first wc painting). This video not only helps you learn how to be a better teacher, it helps your students relate and identify some of the frustrating things about learning wc . Excellent video and can't wait for the ones that this one generates!! Thank you.

Ohh Louise this was a huge help & eye opener for me personally! This was a wonderful valuable informational video to help me with my brush control. While watching both you & Dom painting, I realized why some of my painting results look they way they do & why I was struggling with some things in my paintings. While I am no longer a beginner like Dom, I find that I do some things still like him when painting certain parts like the tail feathers. I’ve been painting for 4 years now and I am definitely in need of more videos of brush control. I never thought of brush control being a factor like water control. Dom did a wonderful job with painting the fairy wren & I don’t think I could have picked out which one he did if I had to choose before watching the video. Thanks so much for sharing this video of both of you painting this fairy wren. I really appreciate your explanation & showing how brush control matters equally with water control. I am super excited to see your future videos on this subject. Thanks again & have a lovely weekend! 💕😘

If I may say so I prefer Don's bolder colours annd harder lines, but that's personal preference of course. I don't think watercolour always has to be soft to be beautiful. It's nice to see different styles😊.

I am in awe. For a very beginner, hubby did a fantastic job. Having you give him direct instructions helped me. Watching you analyze and describe what was giving him problems and what he could do to fix these problems, was the most helpful video I have ever seen! I see this type of video, where you work along side someone, would be so helpful, so valuable. Seeing you react and correct problems is something that would be awesome. Many times we look at our results and know they aren't what we wanted but don't know why. As you talked hubby through his painting while showing us your work was one of the best learning tutorials I've seen. I was able to really 'see' what you mean when you teach. What you teach and what my hands are doing. I know the terminology but haven't put brush to paper. Im trying to make an educated decision and purchase some beginning paint that's worth the cost. I wish I could sit by your side a few times. After watching, I've felt my spirits jump. I think you seeing what was hindering him and setting him back on the correct path, even if awkwardly, was eye-opening. Thank you for this video.

This was one of my favorite videos of yours! Dom looked more like a pro than I did when I first stared. I could always draw because I liked to draw but to transfer the information needed into color was much harder than I imagined. Controlling the brush and the color adds so much more than just drawing a realistic image.(in my experience) This was great to watch!

The content of brush control is great, I agree with everyone. As important though, is the recording of audio and video... it's so helpful to see the side by side, the quiet explanations without too many words to muddy the meaning. Your video and audio work are outstanding. And so is your teaching!

What a wonderful job Dom has done and how very instructive this tutorial is on how to angle the brush and use the arm as leverage to steady the hand. Thank you both for generously sharing this learning process. I remember how after doing lots of carpentry and chopping up firewood over some months how holding a pen or pencil or little paint brush felt extremely awkward. It took a while for the fine motor skills to come back on line, because the arm and hand were so used to doing heavier stuff. It can be a fairly frustrating experience that takes a whole lot of patience with oneself. Kudos to Dom for doing such fine work so early in the process, and to you for showing such understanding and patience. You both demonstrate a winning working relationship that is a great example for all of us.

Loved this video! Perfect timing too with me teaching my beginner class. I loved everything you had to say and will help me help my students too! I direct them to you all the time! Dom did a great job for first time painting! I have to admit I felt his awkwardness with holding the brush right through the screen! It made me remember how I need to remember how that feels as brushes are an extension of my hand after many years of playing. I encourage my students to play with their brushes to see what they can do as brush skills equally important for success and confidence. I look forward to your brush skills videos too! Thank you for pointing out that Dom did NOT anchor his hand…. Instinctive for me… going to make sure I teach that! You are a blessing. Love your sharing, love the cat! Dom did such a good job! I can’t believe he has never painted before. Obviously, I can see that he’s more of a beginner, but he really surprised me. I feel as though I’ve gotten a lot better at painting, but holding my brush securely and comfortably is still challenging. I have some arthritis in my hands, and I tend to grip my brush too tightly, which makes it worse. When I watch how confidently you use your brush, I keep wondering what I can do to make it easier for me.

I look forward to the tutorial on how to hold the brush! I hope you'll post them in Patreon. That has been a struggle for me too as have only learned from videos, and it's difficult to really see what the position should be. The remark about confidence was the key moment in the video for me. That only comes with practice, but it's difficult to get rid of insecurity. Way to go, Dom! You're a great student and you have the best teacher. I love both wrens. Greetings from Montreal.

Thank you for the great video Louise! I think it’s important to have people who have no experience test out instructions. No matter what the subject. When you know enough to teach it, a lot of things are so natural we don’t even think about them. The brush control and stiffness are things that I’ve struggled with. I feel like I just can’t do it with the flow that the instructor is demonstrating. And then I figure I’m just not good at it and give up.
