Oh dang, I did not expect a Diana reaction to randomly appear on your channel, but I'm certainly not mad about it. I've been a big fan of her vocals for years and it's always a joy to see new people get introduced to her. Of course there's like the 'shock value' of her tone, and you're absolutely right that it *is* weird and that's absolutely what draws a lot of people's initial interest in her. But I think that after that initial shock wears off, her singing continues to easily stand on its own both for skill and just because she has such a lovely and unique tone she uses (that's how I feel, anyway - I'm sure different people get different things out of it). On top of that, she's just a really intense performer, who really gets emotionally absorbed in what she's singing, and that's also something I find really cool. As for people getting mad at you... yeah, I would not be surprised if that happened, haha, even though you didn't say anything wrong. I think she has quite a, let's call it passionate fanbase in the reactor space, and some people will take anything less than complete praise and adoration as a slight towards their idol. But I'm glad you're not letting that stop you from having fun with it. Personally, just from having seen a bunch of behind-the-scenes stuff with Diana, she seems like a very funny and down-to-earth person who has no trouble making fun of herself, so I think people take things a little too seriously on her behalf. I mean, it wasn't that bad. You kinda echoed an opinion I have, which is that Dimash is more technical than emotional, and you saw just how amazingly good a singer Diana is. In fact I actually saw the effort you had to make to stay in the Irish (hope I got the accent right) Clown character for channel consistency. To be honest, the first time I heard her was a bit of the end of this song, and my first thought was "wow, that was wierd". This opinion evolved quite quickly into "wow, she's the best female vocalist I've ever heard". I have a feeling you're transitioning (no balls removal required) into the second phase of this too. This was clearly part of a competition & as a competition piece demonstrating vocal range it did the job. Putting the unexpected low register first also grabbed your attention but it did sound about as low as she could manage; F1, handy for tuning a bass if she can reach E1 but the whole performance was very safe... because it was a competition. For a woman without gigantism it is very difficult to get below F2 so she has an extra octave on most. I wonder if she is using sub-harmonic techniques popularised by Geoff Castelluccio etc. It is however very slow, it would perhaps have been better for her to sing a piece in her own tongue, Russian? It felt too practised, too well performed, without true feeling; singing she couldn't help falling whilst staying well away from the edge. Some of my favourite vocal performances come from those so involved in the narrative and guts of a song they fall over the edge and their voice collapses, breaks, twists-turns & barely makes it to the end (or actually doesn't) let alone an encore - in a singing competition that will never happen.

Honestly, thank you for giving such a genuine reaction, the fact that you’re not afraid to say what comes to mind is so refreshing. Some of Diana’s fans are a bit overzealous when it comes to criticism towards her (not that I perceive your comments as criticism, but some inevitably will). Don’t mind their comments- at least not the ones about you vaping and whatever, there is generally a more conservative culture in Russia where things like that are taboo. So those comments are understandable at least, although maybe not totally excusable. All that aside, her “weird” tone is my favorite thing about her voice, it’s strangely comforting to me and I think you will find her to be a great performer in general :)

The fact that Mark was doing this with a live audience-- who were also making comments that made him laugh-- and he was totally walking in blind with a singer that does have shock value because of her register, needs to be taken in to account. Mark never trashed her as a horrible vocalist because she is not.

Greetings from Scotland! Please, read this. Pretty please? Diana was just 18yo here. She is 20yo currently but I've been following her career since she was around 13yo. Diana is a natural Dramatic Contralto so the lower registers are her comfort zone but she has increased her range even more since this. She also naturally sings with polyphonic overtones so it sounds like many voices at the same time! Any song, any genre, in any language, Diana can sing it and improve it! You need a little back story to understand what helped "create" this unique phenomenon:- Diana's birthmother had multiple miscarriages but when Diana came along, she seemed to hate her. She verbally and physically abused her, trying to drown her and belittle her. It all culminated when (at 3yo) a passing relative found her in her home with a broken collarbone and several other injuries. She went for the authorities who removed Diana from her birthmothers care and placed her in an orphanage. For almost 2 years Diana never gave up hope and she knew that she was meant for something better. (This story is in her Wikipedia entry) Finally her new mother (Irina Ponik, who worked as a masseuse there occasionally) Signed her adoption papers and took her home. She vowed to pay Irina back for her kindness. Irina had a real struggle because Diana had obviously been badly affected by the experiences and at 5yo, she had a very bad stammer. It was recommended that she be taken for singing lessons to help this and immediately it was recognised that Diana had perfect pitch and an excellent ear for music and songs. 1 year later, at 6yo, Diana was performing solo on stage! This young unique phenomenon sang everywhere and anywhere she could, working constantly to earn money for the family who rescued her.
