A viewer asks about TULIP Calvinism and if Lutherans agree with the five points. TULIP is an acronym which stands for:
T = Total Depravity
U = Unconditional Election
L = Limited Atonement
I = Irresistible Grace
P = Perseverance in Grace

I am a Lutheran LCMS member and regular worshipper. I am also a graduate of the primary Reformed Seminary in the US. Sometimes I like to describe myself as a PaleoLutheran. There are a number of aspects of Lutheran worship that I find very rich and appealing. I find it interesting that Melanchthon, the person who understood Luther best supported a merger with Calvinists. It is also interesting that efforts toward a Lutheran Calvinist dialogue historically have virtually been initiated by Calvinists. Lutherans, in having little if any interest in such dialogue have become somewhat of a theological and intellectual ghetto which is unfortunate. A robust Calvinist-Lutheran dialogue today would be extremely beneficial to both traditions as well as the Protestant Orthodox Faith in general.

The Scriptures use a number of concepts to describe what is called “salvation” including election, calling, regeneration, repentance, justification, adoption, sonship, predestination, sanctification, perseverance, glorification. Calvinists teach that each of these concepts rises from the central doctrine of Union With Christ. And Lutherans as well Calvinists teach an order as to how these graces occur in temporal as well as eternal life. It seems to me the real difference in these two Protestant traditions lies primarily in hermeneutics (the methodology used in interpreting the Bible). Let’s do that podcast.

Tulip is not a slogan coined by Calvinists. It was coined as a pejorative acronym against Calvinists by Dutch Remonstrants led by Jacob Arminius. Calvinism starts and ends with a coherent doctrine of God (theology proper).

Hey Pastor. Not a Lutheran, but I enjoy your videos. I know you reject Lordship Salvation, but your interpretation of Paul's disqualification definitely sounds Lordship-y. Isn't it more accurate to say he was referring to being disqualified from ministry, being that that is the context of the chapter? I can't see how you think he's referring to losing his salvation in that particular passage, even if you believe that one can fall away.

The doctrine of election in Lutheranism is virtually the same as in Calvinism. Election is not the same concept as predestination or calling.

Brother! We cannot fall away! Philippians 1:6, John 10:28 Romans 8:28-30. All of Romans 9! Please know that the passages in 1 Corinthians about taking heed is a warning passage! These warning passages in Hebrews as well never say that we can fall away but guarding our hearts in the truth that we may not fall away. The elect cannot fall away and if our salvation was up to us we would lose it quicker than we think.

So the Holy Spirit warns us against falling away even though we can't? Why warn against something that can't happen? Limited Atonement is correct, if Jesus died for every human being who ever lived then nobody would go to the Lake of Fire. Universalism is heresy, you say Pastor you believe in Total Depravity, if we are so then God must quicken us to believe and then faith is a gift from God and not within us. John 6:44 "No man can come unto me unless my Father who sent me draws him" Not all men are drawn to Jesus only those who the Father quickens who are his elect can come to Christ, the sheep. Jesus only died for his sheep, he did not die for the goats, when the Apostles say that he died for all it means the whole world of God's elect from all nations and tribes and tongues, just like when God says, "I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh" all doesn't mean every person in the world all means all nations, tribes and tongues he will pour out his Spirit. *John 10 : 11,26-29* I am the Good Shepherd; the Good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep. But ye believe not, because ye are not of My sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them and they follow Me. And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand. My Father, who gave them to Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father’s hand.

To deny the doctrine of limited atonement is not to accept universalism. Lutherans agree with Calvanists; scripture is clear that there are some who do not receive God's grace and suffer eternal damnation. Notice in John 3:16-18, a distinction is made between "the world" and "whoever believes" and "whoever does not believe". It is written that "God so loved the WORLD" then immediately says that "whoever believes in him shall not perish" and "whoever does not believe stands condemned". It does not say He gave is only son that the world may have eternal life, only those who believe, thus, we reject universalism. Lutherans, however, reject the idea of limited atonement, because we believe that scripture teaches that God wills the salvation of all mankind. Consider for example Ezekial 18:30-32. In this passage God commands that the Israelites repent of their sin that they may be forgiven saying "For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone". Also consider 1 Timothy 2:1-4. Here, the apostle Paul urges Timothy to pray for authority figures to live godly lives because "This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants ALL PEOPLE to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth". Thus, because God is omnibenevolent (i.e. all good and the goodest possible good), he wants all of mankind to live in eternity and in his presence. Furthermore, God is infinite, so His sacrifice and resurrection is infinitely powerful to atone for sin and raise to life. That doesn't necessarily mean it has to "all get used up" so to speak. For reasons beyond what is taught in scripture and beyond human reason, some come to faith by the grace of God and only by the work of the Holy Spirit, and there are others who reject the gospel.

@@nathanramos3542 Psalms 115:3 [3]But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. Isaiah 55:11 [11]So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. If God wanted everyone to be saved then everyone would be saved. When the scriptures say he died for all, that means not Jews only but Gentiles too. All of the elect which includes Jews and Gentiles of ALL nations, tribes and tongues. In John 10 Jesus clearly indicates who he died for, the sheep. Jesus did not die for the goats.

@Gabe Ruth Scripture teaches in Isaiah 55:8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways declares the Lord.” Scripture is clear in the previously cited passages that God desires for all to come to repentance and be saved. It is also clear that we come to faith only by God’s choice and election, and that there are some who are, in fact, subject to eternal damnation. To say anything more, namely, to say that God chooses some for condemnation, is to add to the teachings of scripture. In fact, it directly contradicts scripture. As we are reminded in the writings of the prophet Isaiah, we do not and cannot know the ways of God beyond what is revealed in scripture. We simply must take it by faith.
