Its called graveyard shift because in the old days people would "die" and be buried alive in their caskets. After they discovered scratch marks on the inside of the caskets they built pipes leading to the surface and ran a string down the pipe then tied to a bell above ground. They had to have someone there all night in case someone woke up in their grave. Hence the name "Graveyard Shift"

Not just the lack of sleep, it's the STRESS that causes the lack of sleep
@artofsam
@artofsam 11 ай бұрын
Something that isn't acknowledged either, you can be setting aside at least 8 hours every night to sleep but if you suffer from chronic stress and anxiety then you still won't an efficient 8 hours of rem-sleep but more like 4-5 hours of rem sleep if you are lucky. So we can all have the illusion that we are getting enough sleep when in fact we are not.

You’re right. Stress causes lack of sleep, and lack of sleep in turn raises cortisol levels making you more stressed - it’s a vicious cycle. The only way out is to generate positive momentum - to find ways to reduce stress then get on a consistent sleep schedule, maybe using some melatonin or herbal tea to help

Weird I rarely ever sleep and I never get sick. I haven’t had a cold since I was a child. My girlfriend gets very jealous that I never get sick or catch the colds she gets. I mean I don’t feel the best when I go days without sleeping that’s for sure. I feel nauseas but I can still do all my daily activities just fine. I know lack of sleep is bad for you…but I’d rather go without sleep than be on seroquel and ambien which are the only 2 medications I’ve found that work. Started giving me an irregular heartbeat so I decided I don’t want to take those anymore. I’ve gone 14 days with 0 sleep. I don’t get tired but I definitely do not like being awake for so long. Its very stressful and I hate it more than anything. I’ve never experienced hallucinations from being up for days. I know some people are able to do this. I’d love to get some testing done and find out why I can’t sleep. Been that way since I was 2…you don’t even want to know how I had to make my self sleep as a child. Definitely made me think of those sleep disorders where kids bang their heads on the wall while trying to sleep.

My other follow up question would be whether the decrease could be attributed to the change from 8 hours of sleep to 4 hours of sleep. In other words, would the same effect be present in someone who already sleeps 4 hours each night, when the body is already used to that schedule?

@@spicefactor9604 Not necessarily. Some things are more properly attributed to change. For example, jet lag goes away as the time elapsed since the time zone change increases. Similarly, it could be the case that the negative effects of mild sleep deprivation decreases as the time elapsed since the change in sleep schedule increases. Now, it’s very possible that things won’t improve enough to return to the status quo ante, but I would imagine that something sustained is much better for the body than a sudden change in this instance. Of course, I don’t doubt that little sleep is bad. But I do think that the evidence adduced probably magnifies the negative effect.

That’s the REM cycle. To wake up well rested you have to keep track of your REM cycles and make sure you sleep the correct amount. It’s been a while since I last studied this, but I believe every cycle is about 1.5hours (or an hour and a half). I find it weird that with 7:30 hours you didn’t wake up well rested, you should look that up with yourself :)

If you want your immune system to be active, eat food at the intervals of 6 hours minimum. Clean stomach and colon. Just 2 hours of time for digestion and 4 hours must be an empty stomach.

Context: NK cell are CD16 and CD56 positive cells, meaning they have these receptors on their surface which activate your immune system to fight off foreign pathogens. They are a critical component of your body’s innate immune system. The issue with NK cells is they don’t have memory and cannot remember what cells they previously attack. Hence, these assassin cells essentially boot up up, suit up, get strapped, and wipe out any pathogenic viral or malignant cells the body encounter, in a one and done deal. They do this by three mechanisms: 1. ADCC which used antibodies to defeat microbes 2. Nonspecific activation to foreign cells 3. NK cells release performs and granzymes which poke holes into the viral and malignant cells and subsequently inject cytotoxic enzymes, respectively 4. Absence of molecules called MHC 1 on ANY cell or presence of MICA proteins on malignant cells also stimulate them to kill. A lot of research is underway to somehow harness the potent anti-malignant potential of these cells by biosynthesizing them and putting them to work in our fight against cancer.
