What Actually Happened With Our Dog's Hot Spot

Our golden retriever Wrangler wore a cone for two months this summer after getting hot spots on both sides of his face. At first, we didn't know what they were or what caused them. We began to wonder if it all started with him rolling in poison ivy and then scratching excessively. The vet and the internet said it would last about a week or so. That was not the case for our pup. Every time we took the cone off, he would break the wounds open, prolonging the healing process. It was quite the ordeal!

Great too hear he is doing better! It is hard when pets are hurting, they cannot tell you what is wrong. You both are great dog parents and looking after Wrangler

Yeah it was a hard thing to watch him go through. But we learned a lot and have been able to catch hot spots early now that we know what to do and he’s barely bothered at all

Poor Wrangler! My dog,also a golden,would get hot spots on her belly. Horrible sores and she would scratch constantly. Vet recommended tea tree oil. Picked some up at a pet shot and sprayed her belly . She did stop itching and it caused no pain or skin reaction. Had to be applied constantly until she healed. This was years ago and tea tree oil is now in all sorts of cosmetics. Good luck!

Tea tree oil for hot spots. Thanks for the recommendation, hopefully others will find this trick helpful too! We'll have to go pick up a bottle and have it on hand.

That's so sweet of you! It was a rough time, but we learned a lot and will hopefully be able to prevent any future hot spots or at least catch them early so we can take care of it before it becomes an urgent visit to the vet. He is absolutely terrified of the vet, literally trembles the whole time, so we try to be proactive and avoid those trips as much as possible.

@@WranglerPawsmy beagle has one now on top of her front paw. It looks like a half of a golf ball sitting on top of her paw it's so swollen. As bad as I feel I had to go out and get a cone for her too. She licked non stop for days

great he feels better! my golden gets oftenly hot spots every time in a new place, my vet says it is definitely not related to food anymore (she eats raw) she thinks its the breed. and everytime a new hot spot will come out we will treat it

Glad we're not in it alone. His popped us when we visited Tennessee this summer. We thought it was his food (we cook/make his food but have done raw before too) so we switched from being chicken based to fish based and it seems to have helped his overall itchiness, but it could just be a coincidence I suppose. Nonetheless if you catch the spots early you can treat them very quickly. He recently had another hot spot pop up on his hip, we shaved it immediately and it went away in two days.

Looks like pyoderma. It is treated with antibiotics and laser therapy. And excellent lactic ferments for a very long time. Best wishes for healing

Had to look up pyoderma and it's essentially 'pus in the skin caused by a bacterial infection' and i think you're spot on. The vet didn't call it that by name but the description is essentially what he said it was. Healing took time, lots of cleaning, and an antibiotic creme. He's so much better now. 😊

Those hotspots always seem to form on the side of their face. My girl dog had one same place and now my boy dog has had one on both sides of his face. Horrible things. I have Ivy in my garden which grows over from outside my garden. I think I'm going to be on a mission now to clear the lot away

It was a long road, but he is SO much better now. Between us not recognizing the signs early enough and his persistent scratching it took awhile. Live and learn. 😊

We actually got that one from the vet when wrangler had to have emergency surgery after swallowing an avocado pit. I never thought we’d use it again 🤦‍♀️

@@WranglerPaws my goodness. All our dogs in Ecuador eat the whole avocados🥑 that fall from the trees in the backyard. Ouch surgery!?

Unfortunately, my dog's suffering through something similar and the vets in my area had no idea about what was the problem I was doing some research and stumbled across this video My dog had the same problem in march of this year and we got him checked and he was on medication for about a month. After that, we stopped the medication and it seemed to work until now , as he has the same problem, the red patches and the skin loss

Mines got one underneath his neck and its hard to get him to stop scratching at it while I'm treating and he is a havanese male I'm using a hot spot spray and antibiotics but the tablets are so damn big and I break it up in pieces to give him but it dont stay down for long he vomits about 3hrs everytime after so I now watched a vet on here saying Oregano oil and coconut oil

We think that's how it started. Could have been rolling in poison ivy or maybe it was something else, who knows. He did scratch the heck out of it though and that broke skin and caused it to get infected. Fingers crossed we can prevent it this summer 🤞
