Being a 911 operator has to be one of if not the most difficult jobs out there. They must follow very strict guidelines for countless amounts of situations, stay 100% focused at all times, have to multitask with emergency responders and callers, deal with people calling in need of non-emergency, keep their caller as calm as possible, and most importantly, they have to listen the horrors of everything out there. They even have to listen to people on the phone one minute, and then hear their death. They are the last person some people ever talk to. Their job is tough mentally and emotionally. And if they fail in one of these areas, they got a legal case on their hands.

The last time I called 911 was when my boyfriend and I were driving and someone decided to drive recklessly into the opposite lane (going the wrong way) and swerved in-front of us intentionally, nearly hit us head on, swung into a drive-thru, got food, and drove around way more recklessly. I told my boyfriend to go through the drive-thru so I could get his license plate and call 911 so we did and we pulled into the next parking lot to call. We were both shaking and while we were on the phone with the dispatcher, the car comes flying out of another opposite lane after crossing the two correct lanes and spinning back around another car then sped down the dirt side road right in front of us! It was WILD.

I’ve had to call 911 many times or my loved ones have for me. My life was saved a few times. I was also a medic on an ambulance for about 10 years. Some calls were foolish such as calling for a broken fingernail. Yes this happened to us or it could be a mother screaming after watching her 3 year old son get accidentally run over by his dad. He didn’t survive and went into cardiac arrest as I intubated him. The tire went over his head and he had 0% chance of survival. 911 dispatcher and I both had to go to counseling for PTSD over that. I could go on and on with the calls I’ve seen. Some are horrific. Seen many many people die over the years. Some calls we saved the person after they called for chest pain and was having a massive heart attack that was so bad he was an hour away from dying. We were credited for saving his life. Another man who was 43 called 911 for chest pain. He was stable when we got there and when we left for the ER. His 16 year old son was on the phone with his pastor asking him to meet him at the ER. Enroute my patient crashed and he was in cardiac arrest as we arrived at the hospital and I felt as I killed that child’s dad and there was no mom in the picture (don’t know why such as divorce or death. I don’t know). I almost quit over that one I was so traumatized.

I've had to call 911 plenty of times, but I AM 911 (fire department) for the last 17 years. My brother is a 911 dispatcher for the last 11 years, as well as being a firefighter for 18 years, too. This video is correct. We understand that it is an emergency. We're trying to get to you as soon as we can to help. BUT, we can only help if we know where you are (please learn your roads around you, or look for street signs), the nature of the emergency (we know as much as you tell us!), and if any life threatening situation exists. Tell us what you can, because until we are on scene, we can only go by the relay of the dispatcher, who is talking to you, that is already at the scene. Remain as calm as possible. If you are panicking and sputtering words, the dispatcher won't be able to help us find you. And don't be afraid to call for little incidents either. The dispatcher will relay to us if we need to respond emergency or non emergency, depending on the level of severity of the incident. Obviously fires and wrecks with injuries get the highest response, as well as severe kinds of medical emergencies. We are here to help you, as well. We are not trying to hurt anyone, or make anyone's situation worse. Also, we feel empathy , too. We will sit with you, comfort you, cry with you, understand that things hurt or people's lives have been lost. If you feel like you're lost, alone, scared, or anything during or after an incident, give us a call (non emergency), stop by a station, or, if worried that self harm may occur, call 911 again. We want to protect as many lives as possible. Understand that we try everything we can to save all lives, but sometimes no matter what, things can happen that a life can end. We feel it, too, especially when we have tried to save that life, and do not. We're humans, too. We're not superheroes, superhuman, or anything of the sort. We just try to help others as much as possible.

I've dialed 911 more than once. Four times due to an auto accident (two hit and runs on the highway, one in a parking lot, and one when I witnessed someone hit a parked car trying to parallel park on a city street), a couple of times to report a brush fire (one of those times was nuts, it was from a payphone where the call went through but the microphone didn't work, oops, called back from the hospital of all places and it had already been reported by then), once to send my grandmother in an ambulance (she died that day), once to send my mother in an ambulance, twice to send a customer at work in an ambulance, once to call the cops on someone for trespassing, once in assistance of the teenage girl that lives next door who came and asked for help because she burned something and set the ADT smoke sensor off (I was calling to make sure an alarm call didn't go to dispatch before she put the code into the keypad), and once by accident.

A story where I had to call 911 was when I went through a house fire in 2020. More reasons why that was the worst year ever.

i’m in the uk so i called 999 not 911. about 3 and a half years ago, me and my boyfriend at the time we’re out all night doing drugs and walking around aimlessly. that night we did a lot more than usual and i was fine but he wasn’t. he’d recently had tonsillitis and hadn’t finished his course of antibiotics. he began hallucinating more than normal and some of it was scary. he began to panic and felt his throat swelling. i called 111 (non emergency national health service line) and they sent an ambulance right away. he was diagnosed with tonsillitis again and was given more antibiotics. the paramedic that attended and drove us to hospital said “something needs to change” when we mentioned all the drugs we did (he asked for medical purposes). i don’t know if my ex boyfriend stopped as i have no contact with him now but i’ve been completely sober for a year next month and off of hard drugs for 3 years and 2 months in 10 days. this is my first year completely sober in 7 years. i’m proud of myself. thank you to that paramedic. i really appreciate your help.

I had to call 911 cause my nan fell over in the bathroom and scrapped her back really badly and she was in hospital for 2 days and till this day I still cry about it sometimes.

can confirm, got into a car crash today (3/08/20) (thanking the Lord no one was hurt) and car was totaled, the only injury was a dislocation of the right humerus (right arm) and break of the right clavicle (right collarbone).
