Diggle Diaries: An attempt to film all daylight running freight and interesting workings from Diggle Junction. Situated on the picturesque Trans-Pennine, Manchester to Huddersfield and Leeds route, Diggle Jn lies at the top of a steep incline leading into Standedge Tunnel. Providing beautiful scenery, varied freight and trains working hard up the hill, there aren’t many better places for a bit of trainspotting.
This month includes:
- Class 60 Drax diversions
- HST test train out again
- Midland Pullman
- Class 40, class 20 & class 37 in convoy
- Northern Belle
- And much more...
Thanks for watching!
Please leave a like, it helps a lot and don’t forget to subscribe for more rail videos.

Fantastic video! Didn't fancy recording much last couple of weeks as it's chucking it down all the time. Northern belle was lacking 47s though haha.

Nice one mate, don’t blame you at all it’s been horrendous. Gutted I missed the top and tailed 37’s at Staly this time though. Really wish they’d have a couple of failures and need to put some 37’s on the Belle lol.

Luke, when it rains up there it doesn't mess about does it, especially the monsoon conditions for the binliner! The 68 powering up brought a smile to my face, thanks for the tip to up the volume. I noticed that the 70s seem to be a bit bouncy, is it a feature of the type? Thanks again for your dedication in all weathers, looking forward to the next offering.

Tell me about it mate, that may have been the worst rain I’ve ever been stuck out in filming. And all that for a red shed! I’m not sure about the 70’s but I’ve noticed they always seem to really bounce over the points, starting to produce a lot of clag too! Thanks for the comment John, always appreciated.

Why are so many trains slowed and held at the tunnel entrance?Is there a maximum number allowed in at any given time? Great video despite the weather.
@DiggleJunction
@DiggleJunction 11 ай бұрын
Cheers mate! The tunnel is one signalling section so only one train is allowed through in each direction. As a result it means if someone slow is going through or the trains are closely packed they often get halted at the signal on the entrance there. It’s over 3 miles long too so they’re waiting a while!

Afternoon mate, not sure if you're still in the stream so wanted to send you a note here. Just got back from filming that Class 70 and saw your kind donation and wanted to send my thanks. You know, anyone can watch these videos for free, but the fact you think it's worth putting some money towards really means a lot with all the work that goes in to making them as high quality as possible. Nice one mate, cheers 👍

So, was it a rabbit or a squirrel bolting across the line at 16:44 desperate to get out of the rain? ☔

@mikeuk4130 11 ай бұрын
That was one of Roger’s Wah-wah Rabbits, you saw him eating endives there, that’s very cheap at this time of year. Normally seen in Willesden Green, where it’s a bit chilly, but no matter……..

I didn’t see that until editing the video together! Poor little bugger got away just in time. I mean getting run over is bad enough, but by a binliner…

09:30 Belmont to Healey Mills ??? both in Yorkshire, why at Diggle Jn. Sorry I worked for British Rail, Railtrack and Network Rail for 37 years from May 1970 to March 2007 doing 11 jobs. I started as a Train Recorder at Manchester Victoria West and East, Guard at Manchester Victoria May 1971 until 8th July 1973 then Conductor Guard at Manchester Piccadilly from 9th July 1973 to 31st December 1976 working Piccadilly to Euston via Crewe or Stoke-on-Trent and sometimes Birmingham New Street. These were West of England trains and then Wolverhampton to Euston from New Street. The other days were locals e.g. 4 trips to Glossop/Hadfield or 3 trips to Liverpool Lime Street or 4 trips to New Mills Central. On 3rd January 1977 I moved to Manchester Control and until May 1994 I worked Assistant Controller then Grades A, B, C, D and E. I then moved into management and retired in middle management until March 2007. I am 71 and been retired 16 years.

Wow that's one hell of a career, bet you've got some great stories from those 'golden years' of BR. Hope you're enjoying your well earned retirement. I've checked back through my notes and it's indeed correct, not sure why it would have been sent over here; maybe a circuitous route over the Calder and here to get to one side of a possession.

I'm a newbie to this stuff, so excuse the daft Q... Are the binliners the blue box vans? I see them a lot passing through Wigan, where I live. Is that waste that gets taken to Knowsley to be incinerated?

Hi mate, I can't remember exactly but I think it might have come up to Sheffield, over to Stockport, then over here to Leeds and up. Not 100% but this does run semi regular so i'll double check next time (unfortunately Realtimetrains doesn't go back that far).

Just wondering, but you may have already answered this in a previous diary, what is all the lineside work for if you know?
@DiggleJunction
@DiggleJunction 11 ай бұрын
Hi Phil, I’m 90% certain it’s prep work for new signalling and junction boxes etc that’s going to be appearing down the line. Either that or could be something to do with the eventual electrification.
