In the old days HP projectiles needed about 2000 FPS for reliable expansion. In the 70s - 90s I obs. handgun rounds shot thru humans (HP) which failed to expand. The rifling on the projectile & the downed person were evidence of the round being fired. Projectile technology especially for handguns has come a long way. You folks put out good info. Thank you. 👍😊🇺🇸

One of the first lessons I learned as a gun gun owner is that you are responsible for the rounds that hit on target and OFF and I personally EDC (HP) in my S&W P center. So I am not a fan of fmj unless I'm training or I feel as if I want to up my penatrating power on target.

I am looking to load up some AP rounds for the big bore's as soon as supplies start becoming more readily available but I typically load A-max for distance shooting, a good all around bullet, and FTX ("Critical Defense") for close/self defense shooting. For just having fun at the range I buy factory FMJ.

Clint you do a good job of delivering basic information about guns, cartridges and gear for all the newbies out there. Education is key and the more people know about firearms and accessories the more comfortable and “normalized” they become. We have gained a lot of ground in the 2A community because of channels like yours, Garnadthumb, Lucas a Trex Arms, Mike at guns and gear and many more. I think this kind of push through Social media has done far more then the NRA has done, especially in the past 10 years. GOA and a few others do great stuff to but this is the key. We need the gun manufacturers to step up as well as all the companies that thrive on gear and accessories of firearms and then we can start getting more gun rights back instead of giving them up!

You have to get them while they are young!!!

For SD I personally like the R.I.P. rounds, but they can be expensive, I do like to alternate rip and soft point/holo points in a mag, starting with either holo or soft tip as it cycles better by hand then rip rounds do for hand charging. Had a bad experience with putting down some road kill when I was rocking rip rounds up top…

My 9mms get Hornady Steel Match for carry rounds and Red Army Standard for practice. Both hit exactly where the sights are set, and I've not had trouble with either. I picked both of those because they were all that was available. My 1991A1 gets Hornady Critical Duty for carry and some Fiocchi ball ammo for targets. I bought the critical duty because it was the only expanding ammo I could find, and PoI is PoA with it. I inherited the Fiocchi ammo with the gun and it hits about 1" left at 7 yds, 2" left at 15 yds, and 4" left at 25 yards. My WASR-10 gets Wolf for everything because it's what I have. I'm taking it pig hunting this year, when it cools off a bit more, so hopefully I'll get a chance to see if I need to buy fancy ammo for it, or if the Wolf is adequate. My Golani Sporter is down to my last two mags of 5.56, and I refuse to buy more at these prices. If I had an AR, that might be different, but two mags of Tula will have to do until then, or until prices come down.

The 6,5x55 SE Lapua 124gr GB489 OTM Match High Velocity at 2950fps @muzzle works pretty well as a varmint round for things like fox and coyote up to 200 meters. The high velocity impact brakes the empty open tip and makes the long bullet to tumble sort of like the 5,45x39 Russian military round.

Hmmmm, last I checked, the M855 is/was a frangible armor piercing round or FAP for short and does quite well at going through mild steel such as car doors. As for armored vehicles most are rated to stop up to 23mm so none of the rounds on the table would effect them. Side note steel is lighter than lead.

Was just thinking today which, if any, is acceptable as a suburban home defense round in .223 or 5.56. Hollow point? Frangible? Jacketed soft point? Polymer tip? Would really like to hear a discussion plusses and minuses of each, and specific recommendations within each type.
@fudgerounds91
@fudgerounds91 2 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, M193 is just fine for home defense in a suburban setting and is what's in my rifle right now. 5.56 is velocity based, and drops off significantly after penetrating even a single surface. It quickly begins to yaw and tumble after being even slightly disturbed, and loses a significant amount of penetration by not hitting the target with its tip. After penetrating one exterior wall, while still lethal, isn't likely to hit anything. That's just because it's more likely to not hit someone than it is to hit someone, and would have to penetrate multiple exterior walls, possibly some interior walls, and travel significant distance, about a hundred yards, while tumbling to do so. Being constructed very simply, just a lead core FMJ round, it does deform and flatten very easily, which further limits penetrative ability after exiting a target. My assessment of M193 in my rifle in my house in my neighborhood is that the risk of overpenetration is effectively null, so low it may as well not be considered, especially when the direction of fire will almost exclusively be halted by brick foundation, but even if it wasn't, the risk of overpenetration in my home setting is minimal to the point of being absurd. I don't see any reason to use any special ammo for home defense with a 5.56, as the M193 is a very effective, very lethal round, as decades of service in a variety of environments has proven. It also doesn't hurt that it's very easy on the wallet to practice with my defensive ammo.
@youcanrunnaked
@youcanrunnaked 2 жыл бұрын
@@fudgerounds91 : I see your point but disagree.As I understand it, you’re counting on wobble and tumbling to keep an FMJ round with a muzzle velocity of 3,250 fps and an effective range of several hundred yards from causing collateral damage in a sheetrock-walled home or through a window overlooking neighbors who may be 50 yards or less away. It seems to me if deflection and loss of velocity are the mitigating factors that you are counting on, those are more likely to be achieved with a projectile engineered to mushroom or disintegrate if they hit something. I also don’t think CQC studies bear out your assumptions, but I’m open to being shown otherwise.
