One point that I have found varying across websites around long term capital gains tax is that whether indexation benefit is applicable or not. I checked with Vested customer support and below is what I got as response. Indexation benefit reduces the tax burden, otherwise paying 20% tax makes US investing less attractive when compared to India where LTCG is taxed at 10% after 1L tax free gain. "To qualify as a long term capital asset, the shares of the foreign company must be held for at least 24 months (ETFs for 36 months). The gain will then be taxed at a long term capital gains tax rate of 20% (plus applicable surcharge and cess fees), with indexation benefit"

I don't think ETFs in US markets are direct equivalent of index funds in the Indian Market. I guess there are index funds in the US markets as well, but because of the ease of trading and flexibility people don't invest in Index funds and rather go for ETFs.

Warikoo sir, suppose if I invest 5 lakhs in VOO and after 3 years my 5 lakhs have been converted to 8.5 lakhs. So the long term tax would be 20% which would be equal to ₹70000(on ₹350000 profit). So the my total money will be 7.8 lakhs. Now if compared with NIFTY 50, S&P500 has underperformed. So what will be the advantages of investing in US stocks?

If ETFs are themselves being traded on the stock market, then it implies that their value is no more governed by just the portfolio stocks but other stock market factors as well. Doesn't this actually make it almost more vulnerable and like most other stocks?

Ankur, the way you put out info is mind blowing. Very simple to understand. I have a query. Can you throw some light. I am sure there will be investors not willing to take that step because of this one major reason. The only barrier I am facing with investing in US stocks is that you literally don’t hold these stocks in your name. A third party gets to own them on your behalf. In that case what makes you so confident in investing huge sums with them. Being an Indian citizen, we are not allowed to directly hold US stocks but DriveWealth is letting you own indirectly. Doesn’t this process sound fishy or dicey?

Awesome videos.. however my only worry is and seemingly a risk that govt should not come with some strict rules on investing in US market, as you know they are currently playing with cyptos..!!

Sir, I am big fan of your channel and really appreciate the informative content you share to increase financial literacy among people. One question though on this topic : if we want to invest in US index fund, why shouldn't we prefer ETFs and FoF available in indian market like MON 100 ?I know there is less liquidity in indian ETFs and higher expense ratio in FoF but those can be offset by the international conversion and wire charges. Any specific reason to invest directly in US ETFs instead of Indian International ETFs and FoF ?

For FoF, usually expense ratio will be higher because you are paying twice (one for each fund)
