Unfortunately a lot of people will teach the gospel until it comes to being baptized. Why they don't think baptism is essential but follow interpretations of man.

There are three fundamental things that people err in. One; Context. They don't understand who was being spoken to and what the issue being addressed was. Two; The Greek words that define what the scripture says. Three; the lack of scriptures that back the point being explained. The Doctrines of men (Calvinism, Catholicism, et.al.) poison the original text. It is our job to understand hermenuetics and how to "rightly divide scripture". If someone wants to not progress in the word like a Berean, they will be misled. Is it a lot of work? Yes. Will you get stuck on some subjects? Yes. At baptism you were given the Holy Spirit, He will guide you and help you find the answers. Is the Vulgate right or is the Greek/Aramaic translation right? Should I trust someone who says "Just ask Jesus into your heart" to be saved or what Jesus, Peter, Paul, Jude, John and God said about salvation? How do you know a stick is crooked? You lay a straight one next to it. What makes me shake my head is when someone is presented with proper exegesis, proper Greek/Aramaic to explain the verse, given backing scriptures that address the same issue and they still fight, argue and dismiss the truth. If someone is truly humble and their heart is right, it will become evident what the Holy Spirit teaches us. Ask yourself the question "Do I have a full, biblical understanding using correct study to KNOW what the truth is?". Then you will know what false teaching is. "My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge" Hosea 4:6.....CJ

Thanks for the Acts 20 reference. It's easy to see that things went south quickly. The Roman church began by contradicting everything Jesus spoke about, made novelties into dogma, and turned the kingdom of God into a worldly kingdom. Not saying that there weren't good/godly people around. All of this was initiated by Satan, but no one "sees" him, rather we only see the deceivers and the deceived. "Denominations" started because the Reformation, throwing off Catholic errors, started its own set of errors. But now, men could read the scriptures for themselves, and at every point that the reformers fell short, or started in with their own new errors, challenges immediately surfaced from one to the next. Circumcision was THE error of Paul's day. It was the "work" that failed to produce righteousness. Now, EVERYTHING is a work, and "gospel" means "no work." But at some point, obeying what Jesus "Himself" instructed will have to catch on, or else we'll be found "fruitlessly" arguing theology the day He returns for us.

@@trailrvs No, I'm not even implying that. It is the Acts 20 text itself stating the condition. Paul is "prophesying" (a spiritual gift!) that outsiders will enter the Church and ruin it, and that church "members" will draw away followers because of "perverse" teachings they will make. You and I live in this world, as believers, in fellowship and communion with God. There is nothing He does not already know ahead of time. He has made available to us "empowerments" to accomplish His will. His desire transcends the Reformed proposition that I should be saved - or you. His desire is that ALL THE WORLD should be saved. TULIP wilts before this desire of His! I apologize; I am NOT God and I do NOT know everything that He counsels within Himself. But He reveals these things when we ask Him (1 Cor 2). If we remain faithful, He will inform us when we are right and when we are wrong. The Protestant claim, "the perfect has come" is the "scriptures", is wrong. WE, the Body of Christ, have had the NT scriptures from the moment each one was first read - technically, when the ink dried on the paper! But Jesus says that the Spirit will accomplish ALL His work within us - John 16 - may I say, IF we are IN Him. We need to be assured, therefore, that we are IN Him. The scriptures document what the definition of being "in Him" requires. It is more than "just believing". You have to read ALL the words.

@@trailrvs The VERY EXISTENCE of Catholic and Protestant "proof-texts" SHOUTS to us that we are not willing to engage with the Father and let Him carefully reveal to us what is the full counsel of His will. How else could atheists and cynics rightly lob dismissals at the Faith if it weren't for the fact that WE are so superficial with understanding His very Words.

@@trailrvs When Jesus speaks of HIS body and HIS blood in John 6, NOBODY present understands His statement symbolically! THEY are all offended! Even the twelve. Read the whole chapter! Why? Because this is cannibalism! But at the passover-dinner table, when He passes around the wine and the bread, EVERYBODY present understood it symbolically. They are JEWS! The Passover is symbolic! In BOTH services, the participants are reminded to do this over and over again. But the Catholic Church decided to help God out here, and add some of their own "doctrine" to Jesus' doctrine. That's why the Catholic Church is light on Paul and heavy on Peter, who himself exclaims his frustration with the complicated things Paul talks about.

@Janaina Ribeiro Once you are saved, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption. You cannot lose your salvation. Many denominations want to focus on their "method" of how to be saved. In fact, all denominations are Methodists since they all have a method, and do not rely on the gospel of I Corinthians 15:1-4. Ephesians 1:13-14 - 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

@@shaynebrady3646 Sorry Shane, you are quoting from the gospel of the kingdom which was for the nation of Israel. This kingdom gospel was of an eternal earthly kingdom. Reference to that gospel is found in Acts 1:6 where it says "When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? We see in Luke 22 and Matthew 19 where Jesus tells the 12 that they will sit on 12 thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel. Matthew 19:28 "And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, that ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel." Luke 22:29-30 - 29 "And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; 30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. The gospel of the kingdom for the nation of Israel is seen in Acts 1:6-7 where the 12 asked when the kingdom would be restored to Israel. Acts 1:6-7 "When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, it is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power." Our gospel (for the body of Christ) is found in I Corinthians 15:1-4. In verse 3 it says that our sins were forgiven on the cross. In verse 2 it says that we are saved when we believe the gospel. I Corinthains 15:1-4 "Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures." Romans 2:16 says that we will be judged by Paul's gospel that is located in I Corinthians 15:1-4. This means that we are saved when we believe the gospel of I Corinthians 15:1-4. It is so easy to be saved and have everlasting life, yet many will not accept it and they will be lost unless they accept the gospel of I Corinthians 15:1-4.

So, I have been given a flurry of a dozen or so questions by fellows who are entirely of the Reformed persuasion, whether they wish to admit to it or not. I am also beleaguered by a few Roman Catholics. They both take issue with the doctrines of Church of Christ, on whose page we are all commenting. I am in the position of one who disagrees with both the conclusions of the Roman Catholic Church AND the Reformers, both of whom I find in stark relief to the teachings of Jesus Christ and His apostles, and I also disagree with the Church of Christ in some places. The question of whether or not there was unanimity amongst the Early Christians, there have been multitudes of volumes written, so I suggest that humility is in order here, by everyone in the peanut gallery. The apostle Paul clearly states that “we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Cor 5.10) “to give an account for the things done in the flesh”. He then brings up THIS issue “knowing therefore the terror of the Lord…” I think that humility is again to be considered. It would be frightening indeed, if while waiting your turn in the docket, you hear the Lord currently handing out condemnations for a “doctrine of men “ which you also had pursued vigorously in this life. If Mt. 25.31-46 IS that “bema,” then we should all “examine ourselves as to whether [we] are in the faith.” There is a lot of posturing going on.

In verse 2 we see that we are saved by our belief in the gospel. We believe in the finished cross work of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The BIG problem with Reformation theology is that it promotes little "proof-texts" that seem to have a life of their own. You have "isolated" 1 Corinthians 15.1-4 as if the REST of the scriptures - and even Paul's other teachings - fade into irrelevance because of the "overwhelming brightness" of some proof-text. That this is SHEER HYPOCRISY is proven by a powerful statement of Paul in 2 Timothy, chapter 3 verses 16 and 17, which is yet ANOTHER proof-text; but THIS one rises to importance because it justifies ALL the words that the Holy Spirit has caused to be written into ALL the scriptures. Reformed teaching inasmuch says to the readers of scripture "Well, God is not doing THAT anymore." I call such an attitude BLASPHEMY.

Catholicism began at Pentecost and not the 3rd century. Even a superficial reading of the Church fathers will confirm this. “You must follow the lead of the bishop, as Jesus Christ followed that of the Father, follow the presbytery as you would the Apostles; reverence the deacons as you would God’s commandment. Let no one do anything touching the Church, apart from the bishop. Let that celebration of the Eucharist be considered valid which is held under the bishop or anyone who he has committed it. Where the bishop appears, there let the people be, just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the CATHOLIC Church (emphasis mine). It is not permitted without authorization of the bishop either to baptize….He who honors the bishop is honored by God. He who does anything without the knowledge of the bishop worships the devil.” - Ignatius of Antioch, letter to the Smyrnaeans (107 AD, a disciple of the Apostle John) The early Church taught us how to differentiate the false churches from the true apostolic Church. "It is incumbent to obey the presbyters who are in the Church-those who, as I have shown, possess the succession from the apostles; those who, together with the succession of the episcopate, have received the infallible charism of truth, according to the good pleasure of the Father. But [it is also incumbent] to hold in suspicion others who depart from the primitive succession, and assemble themselves together in any place whatsoever, either as heretics of perverse minds, or as schismatics puffed up and self-pleasing, or again as hypocrites, acting thus for the sake of lucre and vainglory. For all these have fallen from the truth". - Ireneaus of Lyons (a disciple of Polycarp of Smyrna), Against Heresies, 4:26:2, 180 AD

False teachings? Plenty of those from ALL denominations and "Church of Christ" is no exception. Answer these questions: 1. When Judas hanged himself, he was replaced by: Mattias or Paul? (Hint: it isn't Paul) 2. When "Church of Christ" was founded during the "Great Awakening Movement' in the early 1800's, why didn't they use musical instruments? This one answers itself! They wanted to break away from musical instruments, which they considered to be "worldly" but as for Gospel authority? They have none. A broad search of the Bible and knowledge of history can easily inform you that the early Roman house churches did use some musical instruments and no, Christ never commanded on it, He left that one to his followers. Remember the warning he gave about "straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!" Musical instruments would be a "gnat" in this case. Remember that we are FREE MEN AND WOMEN under His Gospel, we are not bondservants or slaves! He actually trusts us to use our discretion. Tragically some denominations have taken the "Jesus didn't allow..." to an extreme: The backwards Amish are a great example of this. Here is a hard truth: No denomination knows the complete truth. Every denomination has error in it. Only Yeshua knows the Truth. Only the Holy Spirit can impart the Truth and the Gospels shouldn't be ignored or skipped over because that IS Yeshua's Truth! There is a whole lot more but everything you need to know is in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Acts and Revelation. The epistles are honestly not that important because Paul only wrote to congregations that did not yet have written copies of the Gospels and yes, the Gospels were written by their authors they are not pseudo-anonymous like it is claimed today because each writer buried a defacto statement of proof that they wrote that Gospel right into that Gospel. It isn't hard to find if you are looking. Also a common error that has slipped into the Protestant denominations is that Jesus gave headship of the church to Peter. HE did not. He gave the 12 Apostles equal authority. Oh and BTW, you are saved by the name, not some grotesque human sacrifice on the cross, the Catholics invented that. Check the Scriptures!!! Research it!!!!

The church of Christ was not founded in 1800. Reliance on secular history will lead to false beliefs. The church was established at Pentecost, 33AD,

Water baptism has never saved anyone. Acts 8:37 teaches one must believe before baptism. The Bible is VERY clear that we are saved at the moment of belief (John 3:16, Romans 10:13, Acts 16:31, John 1:12, etc.). "That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first TRUSTED in Christ. In whom ye also TRUSTED, after that ye heard the word of truth, the GOSPEL of your salvation: in whom also after that ye BELIEVED, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise" - Ephesians 1:12-13 Water baptism for salvation is a false works-based salvation where someone has to do something to be saved instead of salvation by faith alone - which had always been the way Christians are saved. The thief on the cross was not water baptized, but Jesus said "today shalt thou be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:42-43). All the thief did was believe.

Music was never in the New Testament church. History alone shows this. I have done an in depth study on music, and the info is out there. Seek and you will find.

The Lords church has always been there. How He taught in the gospel. The church of Christ is not a denomination but a group of followers that follow the Bible only. Church is the called out, the follwers.. so we don't go to church, we are the church. I so pray for all to keep studying, seeking, etc. All with love

@@blakejames4888 Water baptism does not save us. The only thing that saves us today is faith. Being a Christian is not about outward ceremonies or works, it's about what is in your heart. It's about being born again/born of the Spirit. We are saved by grace through faith alone, apart from works. That includes the work of water baptism. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9 "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." - Titus 3:5-7 If water baptism saved you, how come it's not in John 3:16? How come it's not in the gospel of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4? How come Paul says Christ sent him not to baptize but to preach the gospel in 1 Corinthians 1:17? Paul, the apostle of the church, under the power of the Holy Spirit, says "whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13). He doesn't say whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord and is water baptized is saved. By saying a Christian has to be water baptized to be saved, you are taking the Bible out of context. It's similar to what Seventh Day Adventists do when they take the Saturday Sabbath (which was for the Jews) and try to apply it to the modern day church. It does not work. The Bible does not contradict itself. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). That's it. Faith alone. No works. No water baptism for salvation. Water baptism comes AFTER salvation.

Acts 16:34 says the jailer and company rejoiced because they now believed in God, fulfilling the obligation given by Paul and Silas in verse 31, "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved." How did the jailer accomplish this? How did the jailer come to Christ? Did he say the sinner's prayer, asking the Lord Jesus into his heart to be his personal savior? Verses 32-33 answers the "how" question. Here is a hint - it follows the exact same process or procedure found in Acts 18:8. These two verses (32-33) explains how the jailer believed. It follows exactly what Jesus commands in Matthew 28:28-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:46-49 (first preached in Acts 2:37-41,47)
