Good points made but I think factor based index like equal weight style should be covered too. Also, nifty next 50 index is much more volatile, it has a distinct risk not very comparable to sensex/nifty50. But, for long term this shouldn't be a major issue with consistent investment.

3 corrections.. 1.nifty next50 gave less returns in 5 years duration compared to nifty 50. 2.small cap 250 index fund stocks market cap is not limited to 5000 crore..but all 250+ stocks are included in this.some of whose market cap is way more.. 3.all market cap index fund was recently launched .i think it is in nfo stage still..so the returns are just on paper..there was no mutual fund tracking it..

I agree with you on this. If you talk of index investing then only the Nifty 50 is index to consider because it contains the top companies. Companies which are high on profitability plus companies whose trading turnover is high. That means they are actively bought and sold by large institutional investors. Going beyond Nifty into midcap index and small cap space in index investing is risky. We all know mid cap small caps are prone to sharp corrections. In fact in small cap index investing should be avoided. Certainly by the average investor. One of the fundamental reasons of investing in an index is that you invest you understand the construct of the index and invest in the stability of the market. Nifty 50 automatically selects the top. But the small and mid cap universe is too large to select the best. In fact if you want to invest in index funds beyond the Nifty then sectoral funds or thematic funds are better. The risk is higher there but if you understand the concept and better knowledge then it can give better returns than say a mid-cap index or small cap index.

I don't think the last 5 years is a suitable timeframe for mf returns. Not only index funds but actively managed funds, too. We have managed returns of around 25% CAGR for our users. However, we still don't consistently commit or promise this kind of return.

Please someone explain and suggest: When comparing the benefits between directly investing in the Mirae Asset NYSE FANG+ETF with an expense ratio of 0.65 versus investing in the Mirae Asset NYSE FANG+ETF FoF which has only that ETF as holding with an expense ratio of 0.04, which option might be more advantageous? I don't think nifty next 50 is good, because any company from nifty 50 not doing well will come into next 50 and hit your return. May be as we are in bull market you are seeing next 50 good returns than nifty 50.

Earning potential with lowest risk can be highest with index finds..... target for 0.8 to 1% profit per trade. Keep 2X for two time with 5% down. I made 14% profit in 1 year with this strategy.

Over diversification is also not good. I would consider only following passive funds (Index) Sensex Nifty 50 Nifty Next 50 Nifty 200 Momentum 30 Good actively managed midcap and smallcap funds outperform index funds in those categories
