Pesticides play an important role in maintaining yields of agricultural crops. However, the residues from pesticides can potentially be harmful to humans if they get into the food we eat. A pesticides expert at EFSA explains the measures that are in place to reduce the risks.

The film is very interesting. It would be also usefull to see it in French. I found it is good way to learn technical expressions in that field of interest :)

Does frozen food like spinach and strawberries have the pesticide still or are they killed by the high cold level.
@EFSA_EU
@EFSA_EU 7 жыл бұрын
The process of freezing stabilises different properties of the food. Concerning pesticides they are also kept in the frozen food. There is an EU coordinated multiannual control programme where all MSs collect and analyse for pesticide residues in food samples. The programme allows the collection of fresh but also frozen samples (e.g. spinach, peas without pods) as their content of pesticide remains unaltered. Recommended references: Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/595 of 15 April 2015 concerning a coordinated multiannual control programme of the Union for 2016, 2017 and 2018 to ensure compliance with maximum residue levels of pesticides and to assess the consumer exposure to pesticide residues in and on food of plant and animal origin. OJ L 99, 16.4.2015, p. 7-20The European Union report on pesticide residues in food(www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/4038). The 2014 report will be published on the EFSA website in the next weeks.

Actually, there is no method to analyse matrix-effect of pesticides in our bodies. Therefore, I am not too convinced. Plus, everybody knows that regularly MRLs are exceeded. Residue levels are affected by weather conditions, plus import food is much less reliable (Brazil, USA, Morocco, etc.).

Yeah, every other organisation in the world says that glyphosate is safe, but because ONE organisation (IARC not WHO) says the opposite, you believe the IARC.

If by not harmful they mean it won't kill you oké i agree, let's be honest they are just thinking with their pocket! But... pesticide are harmful and cause illness 100%, not death immediately. Btw if pesticide are not harmful how come my 1 year old brother died from it, yeah he drank (a sip) of a chemical pesticide bottle from a previous gardner, but still.

India pesticide poisonong is mostly from suicide (ingestion). But there is also issues with bad use of pesticides (no protection, homemade pesticide (often worse) and fake pesticide/seeds (which ruins farmers), India need more regulation, control + education of farmers.

This maximum residue levels, what if you eat 3 apples, 2 potatoes, 1 sweet pepper and some strawberries??? Murderers, lying thiefs??
@EFSA_EU
@EFSA_EU 7 жыл бұрын
The maximum residue levels apply to certain pesticide residue/crop combinations. The MRLs are the upper levels of pesticide residues that are legally permissible in or on food or animal feed, based on good agricultural practice and the lowest consumer exposure necessary to protect vulnerable consumers. They are derived after a comprehensive assessment of the properties of the active substance and the intended use of the pesticide. This means that for each of the samples of apples, potatoes, sweet pepper and strawberries there is an MRL in place that says how many mg (concentration) of a pesticide residue by kilogram of food can contain. This does not mean that all the samples that are on the market necessarily reach the MRL. Even more, this MRL has a security factor, in other words, even if the level (concentration) is reached that does not necessarily mean posing a risk to the consumers. Furthermore, the samples analysed are not normally eaten entirely at the same meal. So coming back to your 3 apples, 2 potatoes, 1 sweet pepper and some strawberries it is unlikely that you consumed the samples containing the highest amount of pesticides in the same meal. But even if you did, EFSA does take this remote event into account. So acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) exposure are evaluated in a deterministic way, this is in a very conservative way to test the exposure to single pesticides consumed using different European diets. This is done when setting MRLs (prior to authorisation of plant protection product - PPP) to evaluate the possible risk before placing the PPP in the market but also on the monitoring data Member States send annually to EFSA to evaluate the exposure of EU citizens to pesticides. Moreover, EFSA is now developing a new way to assess exposure to mixture of pesticides having a common mode of action in an organ or in a system also in an acute and chronic exposure, the so called cumulative risk assessment Recommended references: The European Union report on pesticide residues in food: www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/4038 Interactive report on the 2013 European Union report on pesticide residues in food: www.efsa.europa.eu/en/press/news/150312 Cumulative Risk Assessment: www.efsa.europa.eu/en/press/news/160127
