All of this was "explained" to me when I was in the 10th grade. I didn't get it. Explanation lacked something. Then it was explained again in College. I memorized something that got me thru. Then it was explained again by a VERY GOOD math treacher in Grad School. I remembered only what I had previously memorized and got thru with no "picture" in my mind to match what I was doing. This, for the first time in 50 years, makes it utterly clear. Thankfully, I no longer use math everyday in my work...but it will be nice to die knowing that one more mystery has been removed. THANK YOU.

The same thing with me. In my mind there are two different values of pi, one value is 3.14 which is used to calculate circumference and surface of the circle, and the second used to determine angles.

This is the first thing I’ve seen that actually helped me learn what a radian is! Everything, or everyone else was just talking about how it’s more “natural” of a measurement, without actually showing how a radian is measured

I believe there are 360 degs in a circle because the ancients thought, incorrectly, that the earth circled the sun in 360 days. Each degree represented a day's journey around the sun.

It does not end there. A nautical mile is 1 second of arc. 60 seconds = 1 minute of arc and 60 minutes = 1 degree and 360 degrees is the circle. A good approximation to the circumference of the geodesic shaped earth. With regards to the 360 day year, a nice proposition. This would have occurred before the current civilisation.

Actually, earth tilted in the days of Noah, and since then the days of a month could not be equal anymore. Before that there were 360 days in a year.

The 360-day year is a long-standing myth; it's not hard to construct something that produces the same shadow or beam every 365 days (plus a few hours), and a lot of major and minor civilizations did just that. Astronomy was fairly well advanced by the ancients (because it tied into astrology and understanding the gods' intentions for us mortals) such that some could predict lunar eclipses at least by 750 BCE and solar eclipses at least by 585 BCE. Instead, several peoples (possibly starting with the Mesopotamians) had a base-60 number system (compared to our current base-10) as it could be easily divided by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, and 12, the latter important because it's the approximate number of lunar months in a year. This made a lot of calculations easy with fine detail but without over-encumbering the math.

@@eagle6769 The Earth has always tilted. It has a 23.5 degree tilt now. Earth's tilt has nothing to do with the time it takes to go around the sun, which is what defines the length of a year.

My highschool teacher glossed over this and did a really poor job of explaining it so I never really understood it. My current course is dealing with radians so I decided to check out some online content and 3 minutes later I have a far deeper understanding than I ever had after a unit of study in school.

They still missed an important conceptual point: radians are defined as the *ratio* between a circumferential segment and its radius, which is more practical than merely knowing "1 radian ~ 57.2 deg".

ki kus that’s not always true. People are bad at math because they have a bad experience with it, and that’s most likely because of the way the teacher teaches the curriculum and interacts with one another.

@krishankant I learn much better when the studying environment is good for me (for example a quiet place make me study 10x better than in my annoying super noisy class), and I also affected how the teacher teach a subject (just compare this video to some teacher that told you it's an iron rule to memorize that 1 rad is 180°/π), everyone got some different factor that affect their studying efficiency.

Your explanation is nice...but you also missed 1 logic.....what about the 0.28% arc......you neglected it...it may show large differences for large circles..hope you wil try to explain

A circle has 360 degrees because 360 is a multiple of 12 and thus easier to divide into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and even twelfths. The same reason a day is divided into 24 hours, an hour into 60 minutes and a minute into 60 seconds. All of these are multiples of 12 and share the property of easy fractions. The Sumerians were the first civilization to realize this iirc. It isn't arbitrary.

I have a physics degree and a minor in mathematics and I never realized this. Thanks for this video. (To be fair, it was probably explained at some point and I was either away or asleep or something.). .. In any case I never understood the connection and always just used radians without giving much thought to their specific meaning.

come on, use your head and think abit, although its not directly taught, doesnt mean u cant think about it. why dont u find me another number that is divisible by 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12? whats the best number to use? if we omit 7 n 11 we can make that number much smaller n more pleasing to the eye. Hence, 360 is created. And also why 7-11 stores like to pop up 360 degrees around u

If u draw two diameter in a circles, perpendicular to one another then the total angle will be 360°
