We could change the alphabet to incorporate forty four letters and in a hundred years we would need to add another ten because English is always evolving. Interesting video.

20 vowel sounds? Australian must have the most of all English dialects. But you forgot the "o" in "no," which Aussies pronounce as "Noeiau." :-D

This is super interesting. Thank you. With the part when you said the with schwa - I was always taught to say "thee" before a vowel sound; when you'd say "an" eg the apple would be "thee" apple, as opposed the (schwa) car.

Wouldn't it be better, if there were 44 letters in English? It would be so much easier to write and mainly read all the words in English. You would just have to learn bit more letters at the start, but still better in the longrun.

But what do you do about the way we build words e.g. act becomes action, music becomes musician. If we only had one spelling for each sound, then we'd have to write acshon and musishan, and lose the base word. The system looks insane but it's utterly teachable if only teachers were taught to teach it well.

I agree. I think it would make a lot more sense and would give greater variety in expression too.

There are 26 and the singular or combined sounds make the overall words like any language.

Yeah like any language, but every language we have today is flawed and illogical and there are many ways to improve it.

Marek Svec That's what I love of Spanish, there are some letters that changes their pronunciation but are a low average, they are y and ll mostly, cause ll could do a normal "ll" sound (isn't the same as English, is alike to j sound in English), and a sh sound, but only in Argentina and Uruguay, and y can have a y sound or a i sound if it's at the end of the word, like words "soy". Also, in some countries like mine we do a differences between v and b, but we don't do it always, only when we are talking more lowly, when we are talking fast we pronounce "b", and the name of this words change, in some countries are "be grande y ve pequeña, be labial y ve dental or uve y be". And there are some sounds more that changes, like in Spain j is a very strong "hc" sound and in Latin America is a stronger h sound only and Z and C (diferent to the English one) have their own pronunciation in Spain, but in Latin America both sound like S, even in some Spanish Autonome Communities they pronounce Z and C like in Latinamerica, there are a lot of changes.

Hi Alison, I think you should change the title of your video a little by adding that this is in an Australian dialect because there are people like me out there who are actually looking for a video like yours. That way, when people search your video will come up. cheers Jerusha Eg; What are the 44 sounds of English (in an Australian Dialect)?

What about the dark l (ł) found in words like meal and feel
@spelfabet
@spelfabet 5 жыл бұрын
It's an allophone, and it does sound quite different from syllable-initial /l/ but for teaching purposes it doesn't help to consider it a different phoneme. All sounds are affected by their neighbouring sounds, which is why phonemic awareness is difficult, they are never entirely consistent. Extracting sounds from the speech stream is not something we would ever have to do if we didn't use them as the basis of our writing system.
@spelfabet

Sorry for slow reply! I haven't been monitoring my youtube comments. The dark L is an allophone in the same way that aspirated and flapped t are allophones, but are perceived as a single phoneme by native speakers

You spoke so fast that it is hard for non-native speaker to catch up with. And we don't know which words you were saying cuz there's a long list of words in the either side.
