WTF "Without Telescoping Fork" is a linkage front suspension system designed by Structure Cycleworks. They're changing the way we think about MTB suspension through this radical re-imagining.
What are the real world benefits to an average rider? Find out in this video.

I got my scw1 a few months ago, couldn't be happier with it, the thing absolutely shreds. One thing that got missed in this review was the brake dive, there are 4 different options that control the amount the fork drives under braking, and it is quite noticeable. If you get the chance to test ride one, you should.

Yea, it was a conscious choice to leave it out - started getting pretty dense. Glad you enjoy the bike.

Love it. I have 5 AMP Research linkage forks from the 90's and every pivot is still tight. Call me a believer.

This is a great idea but not new. Look at the suspension work done by James Parker decades ago and you will see similar designs used by Yamaha, BMW and John Britten. Very cool stuff.

Yeah, that turned my head on Chutes. Definitely has potential for a shift in engineering the future of mtbs to be able to maintain the Geo and wheelbase during compression.

Good looking design👍 If the price is brought down to a mid-tierish mtb and 29er wheelsizes are added then this may actually be something to look into. How is this different from the Whyte PRST1 bikes (I think they were produced around 1997-1999)?
@StructureCycleworks
@StructureCycleworks 2 жыл бұрын
The SCW1 uses an axle path that is more vertical than that of the Whyte PRST bikes. It also uses typical colleted axles and 6903 bearings found at any MTB shop instead of spherical (ball-type) joints in the load path, so they last for years and years. We've found maintenance requirements (and ease of performing maintenance) to be significantly easier than on typical bikes.

I saw a video on you a bike from the late 1800s here on YT but I forgot the title.. anyway that bike had a very similar suspension to this bike in your video..

There’s something to be said for aesthetics with bicycles and it seems to be looking to fix problems that aren’t really problems. Also, It doesn’t look confidence inspiring if you’re really riding gnarly terrain. Good on you for giving it a go and being curious!

Just test rode this bike in Fernie. A note about leaning the bike into turns: Structures front suspension design is Hossack which has noticeable bump steer when handlebar is turned and the suspension goes through its travel. I think that leaning in the bike on turns sets your handlebar straight which eliminates bump steer which in turn makes for a smoother ride. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nMB6lMRhzZmuaaM.html video link for Hossack bump steer

Godfather of this design I believe is the Bomota Tesi, and the likes of the elf Grand Prix bike etc. it didn’t take off on motorcycles and I’d be interested genuinely to hear why this marque chose to build it. I’d encourage a look at the bmw gs tele lever as it’s far simpler but achieves very similar results with steering angle under braking. But with the proviso that one’s goals are set out as to what this is going to achieve over telescopic forks in geometry v cost and weight gain. If your still ahead on points after that equation….. I’d be surprised tbh. Very interesting though Thankyou 👍 I read the original idea was to separate braking forces from steering forces. Which it did on the tesi in terms of geometry AND in terms of dive. It did both but with loss of dive you loose some weight transfer, which messes with rider expectations on grip level. Esp in the wet. Tesi in Italian means Thesis iirc. Theory for one man is a crash for another potentially. You need to know what your buying here over what you already have, which means being in the cutting edge of performance testing. Not seeing that either …. Or are we? Edit to add…. The majority of problems with telescopic fork bikes can be ridden around by braking the rear first and making the back squat and holding the rear down with the rear brake and moving back, that way the platform stays relatively level when the front brake is applied. But not all bikes respond to the rear brake in the same way. Niki Hayden was a big rear brake man, bless him, as is Marquez who you can see adjusting the rear ride height with the rear brake in some analysis videos, so he can brake harder and later on the front. But weight distribution and wheel base need to fit that riding style. If the bike is toppy it won’t work for you.

This video would benefit massively from just a few edits of examples of a raked out bike losing its rake under compression. Im just having a hard time visualizing why thats the case.

I guess one of the biggest down sides of this setup right now is that it is frame specific as to where telescoping forks are not.

It's a bit of a blessing, too, to be honest. Same shock front and rear (you can actually swap them or keep a spare if you race), and seceral brands of shock work well. In the future we plan to make front and rear matched coils an option too.

@@StructureCycleworks I meant you cannot take this front suspension set up and swap it to another frame, like you can with a standard fork.

The thing is... it is just different for the sake of being different. You claimed no stiction from seals but its using a standard rear shock so there is stiction. Then you claimed the head tube no longer steepens under compression and proceeded to show the head tube steepening under compression.
@mega91161
@mega91161 2 жыл бұрын
You're correct that there is some stiction, but using a leverage ratio greater than 1:1 (like a telescoping fork) will greatly reduce any stiction, I honestly can't feel any stiction on my scw1. Another thing to consider is the front shock is completely isolated from forces that would cause a telescoping fork to bind on its bushings (steering, square edge hits and braking for example.

The effective head tube is at the top of the fork stanchions, not the handle bar stem

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer can I say that? But Society dictates to the majority of people what they should be riding and unfortunately this bike will not be one of them. Back in the day I had a Klein mantra I love that bike it was unusual it performed well and people didn't really like it but I didn't care I rode that bike until I broke it and then went back to a traditional looking mountain bike. But who knows stranger things have been known to happen and maybe it will do well.
