10th version is just a overhyped lasscannon 1 shot with all the sources of invul it is literally not going to do anything, it is costed 155 only becouse it is a russ hull becouse if it was for the vanquisher...

@@internetuser320 you are looking at the wrong stats my friend it is ap4 damage:1d6+6 doesnt make mortals and doesnt ignore invuls You are looking at the 9th stats If it had something like devastating wounds similar to the rules on the railgun then i would agree that it has utility but it doesnt and +4 invuls are normal in 10th

I don't know about the strongest, but my favourite was always the Exterminator and the Stygies VIII Vanquisher (which one-shotted a Stormblade in its first game, also an original Apocalypse game and since done nothing!). Rule of Cool wins over all!

I'm playing in a local Narrative Campaign and I got a Vanquisher and gave the cannon the weapon modifications for +1 Attack and +1BS. If it sits still, it hits on a +2 (rerolling the 1's if shooting the things the Sentinels spotted) and wounds just about dang everything on a +3, rerolling if it fails against vehicles/monsters. Consistent 12+2D6 damage on vehicles. I basically pick one thing and tell my opponent to remove it from the battle every turn it's alive. It has certainly earned it's name of "Finger of the God-Emperor" XD

Haha I had something similar in our Crusade last year where my punisher got a artificer weapons which dealt out mortals on 6’s which weren’t capped (had some dude complain to the organizers so I said I’d cap it at 6 and they said nowhere does it say it’s capped so they’ll allow it) I just used grinding advance every move to get the 40 shot and dished out the mortals 🤣 then it got the artifact that gave it a 4+ invul. Never seen a punisher so feared and causing so many arguments 😂

Super jealous XD I also had a tank Commander on his way to get the Shadsplinte Cloak, which gives the model that has it Lone Operative. A Vanquisher, plus it's own orders, plus the Grand Strategist Enhancement amd the Blessed Hull would have made for a Leman Rus with the god-gun I already mentioned, a 5+ invuln, and 2 tank orders that you ALSO can't shoot at outside of 12". >:3

I think my favorite so far has been the battle cannon. The rerolls are nice, and paired with some extra ap from other tank or strtagems, its quite nice.

Been playing against guys with Orks and Tyranids mostly, and they play with an Emperor forsaken amount of infantry. I'm expecting two more Leman Russ models in the mail, so I'm tempted to build them as Punishers just for the heavy-handed anti-horde.

Loved this video! I've been 3D printing my own Traitor Guard army, and this really helps me in planning what I want. Very happy to see that my two LRs I've built so far are basically ideally kitted out. One is a Batltlecannon with plasma, and the other is a Demolisher with meltas and an open hatch so I can stick a commander in there!

I do love the Vanquisher and run it pretty much whenever I am running more than 2 tanks, but my group plays at 1K, where it means you really have to squeeze to get anything more than 2 Leman Russ tanks into the same list. As long as the Vanquisher take 100 points worth of damage and kills 1 enemy tank across the entire game I'm more than satisfied with it. I had a game once where I 1 tapped a predator in Turn 1, and for the rest of the game my opponent did his best to try and kill the Vanquisher just out of fear of it. It didn't die and the Rogal Dorn and Tank Commander it drove in with took no damage all game and killed most of the rest of his list.

In the same boat playing around 1k usually and the Vanquisher is great, I also love the regular battle cannon russ as I feel like it doesn't need order support to perform well against anyone on an objective. It is also great to put in reserves and pop out the side of the map with full rerolls to hit to put the hurt on an unsuspecting unit on an objective.

The LRBT may not be the strongest, but I do feel that it is the most versatile. Throw on a Plasma Cannon sponsons, and keep the lascannon, and you can deal with most threats.

The AP nerf on battle cannon really hurt it but it's really accurate and gets a lot of rerolls which is cool

The standard LRBT is reliable, but does nothing remarkable. It also struggles a bit against high toughness/high SV targets. Also, if you use a lot of Scout Sentinels, the reroll 1s of the LRBT is kind of wasted(and so you rely more on targeting things on objectives). Personally, I am more a fan of the Exterminator. Very dangerous at "close" range with its twin-linked S9 Dam3 against most targets, and it is fun to set up combos with the rest of the army by marking targets for them(combine with Fields of Fire, you can add -2 AP to even lowly Guardsmen).

Same. It's my preferred loadout on my TC. Also I think people are sleeping on the trip heavy bolter loadout. The sheer volume of fire coupled with sustained (and typically lethal hits) shreds a lot of things, especially with layer buffs from the Hellhound and Exterminator.

I don’t play Guard, but I have built 3 Russes as proxy Predators for my Death Guard. If I ever convert to play traitor Guard, this will come in handy. Leman Russ is by far my absolute favorite GW kit.

I think whats nice is that even the "worse" ones have their niche and are complimented with their abilities mostly well. It really just depends what you are fighting against as to which one you take (except maybe the punisher which struggles) which from a tactical viewpoint I really really love.

I play 3 vanquishers as it's the most bang for buck and they're going to be antiarmour in my army anyway, I have the gun magnetized so I can just change guns if there'll be any changes to the points

I am building my second and third for my Krieg, they're all newer kits with double turrets so I'm magnetizing between Vanquishers, Demolishers, and Executioners. With BS4 and without being able to spam plasma guns like in past editions, I think I'll most commonly run 2 Executioners to balance against all the Marine opponents out there. Thank you for this, it confirms what I had planned.

Messes up the maths slightly, but you said a few times the tank commander gives a +1 to hit. He's actually a +1 to BS so it stacks with heavy on the vanquisher for a 2+ to hit when stationary.

I ran my guard for the first time in tenth last week. Im a tread head so it had one tank commander (demolisher with grand strategist), 1 exterminator, 2 vanquishers (yes, im a mad lad) and 2 regular russes. One of the biggest issues for guard forces is the limitation of not being able to dish out orders to tanks liberally. The tank commander and lord solar are your only options. I think this is therefore a huge factor towards running regular leman russes, both in tank heavy and mixed lists because their in built re-rolls helps them to act somewhat self sufficiently. The vanquishers really suffer for having only that one shot and you really need to push into the gun, staying stationary where possible and ordering them for +1BS too, so you're hitting on 2s. But at that price point they seemed workable options for me, even if, say, a styges laser destroyer (legends) might be better to work independtly... I dont think 1 vanquisher could be relied on alone, and any more than 155 points each and you then have to instead consdier just taking a shadowsword for insane anti tank capability. On that note, I'd be interested to see a similar break down for the super-heavies!

My favorite one will always be the Vanquisher due to a 9th wdition game between me and a friend. I instantly killed his Virtex beast with that cannon and gave that tank a name. He is Vinny the Vanquisher

Guard have alot of redundancy built in right now, you can run a more AP heavy list of tanks and kind of skip needing ursula for free fields of fire. Or you can go minimal AP and take a hellhound + exterminator + fields of fire spam. The big thing on alot of the tanks is scout sentinels using daring recon, hitting on 3's re-rolling 1's is no joke when your firing 7 demolisher shots. 1 demolisher buffed with fields of fire, exterminator withering hail, hellhound removing cover and sentinel rerolling 1's in my experience kills just about anything.

Pts adjustment was a much needed relief, imo having played the army extensively it feels like they're still placing way too much weight on the tanks damage potential and durability. Cause ya gotta hit first and lets face it dice are trollish. I think they need to come down a few more points just based off of other factions like space marines and the OP pointy eared bastards.

i think that allowing more access to orders would be better in comparisson to point reduction (althougth if thats where they go i wouldnt complain) In comparison to 8th and 9th orders are the more scarce now and have a lot of scenarios where you cant use them batleshock,disembarking,entering reserves etc wich feels awfull when you have some playstyles that basically play without any of the army or detachment special rules. Imagine if a marine player loses oath of moment becouse he got out of a rhino or is batleshock it feels stupip (specially the transport part becouse at least then battleshock does something....)

Not so deep in warhammer guy here, in WH40K is that a platoon on the scale? Like platoons are a typical 3-4 tanks, and thats abt a company sized element, in WH40K are the platoon scales all mega wacky? If so thats both weird and hella neat

If you have the time and patience, 3D printed tanks are really good quality and super cheap to mass produce. You could probably have someone print files for you, and it would still be cheaper than GW. This is not a joke. There's a lot of good 3D printing KZfaqrs. Watching them can give you an idea if 3D printing is right for you. You can get stuff that is literally by measurement, identical to GW sculpts. But you can find better sculpts very quickly.

Narratively, the main tank's special rule kind of works for me. A real tank has limited ammunition on board and there's a natural tendency to be cautious about shooting too much, just in case you need it later. So the big re-rolls against a target on an objective kind of feels like the TC going "oh, *this* is later" and freely expending rounds on the priority target. I am sad that the Vanquisher is the cheapest in 40K, though. For me 40K lacks the "air of reality" that allows me to really get caught up in some other games, and this is a good example. The Vanquisher is clearly inspired by the real-world Sherman Vc Firefly. Compared to a regular Sherman V, the Firefly is about 80% as effective against soft targets (the 17 pounder's HE round is less effective than the Sherman's 75mm version, and Fireflies had much less ammo so didn't carry much HE anyway, but most soft targets were engaged with the co-ax machine gun so it's still pretty good against infantry, trucks, and so forth) but is 50 to 100% better against hard targets - the 17 pounder being the best Allied anti-tank weapon of World War 2. Economically, Fireflies were massively more expensive than Sharman Vs, and in WW2 games the added ability of the 17-pounder against heavy armour more than off-sets any points reduction for the less effective anti-infantry. So... I get why the infantry-focused, close-quarters-battle game that is 40K puts more value on anti-infantry weapons. But it still makes me sad that what should be the queen of the battlefield is reduced to a low-cost meat shield.

Part of the reason is that unlike most WW2 games, the Vanquisher only "hits" once(Attack1) per interval, while other guns can "hit" many more times. It would be more akin to if a Firefly Vc had 3 times slower rate of fire, and even then it would take 2 direct hits to knock out a regular enemy tank(meaning in the same time span, a regular tank would be able to shoot 5-6 times, with probably only 4 direct hits required to knock out the tank). If that was the case, in WW2 games, no one would want to buy it, if it also was more expensive compared to the regular tanks. But that is usually not the case. They have the same rate of fire. So to balance it, they are more expensive/harder to aquire. In 40k, the Vanquisher does have a long range(72") and accurate gun(when stationary), which can make it a difficult target to engage, as it can basically camp a corner and fire at anything(terrain permitting). And 155 pts is a good price for a model that is as tough as it is, combined with the secondary weapons and a punchy main gun. If you get lucky with both the las cannon and Vanquisher cannon, you can 1-shot a lot of vehicles and monsters.

In my 2k games I've been running 2 Rogal Dorns, 1 Exterminator Russ and 1 Tank Commander with Demolisher and Grand Strategist. Worked a treat for me!

I keep running into Demolishers, not because I prefer them over the other Russes, but because I need something that can reliably kill enemy tanks. Most other Guard anti-tank is infantry based and hits on 5+, while the Demolisher can move 10" and hit on 4+. S14 is also nice since there's a few T12 models running around these days, as well as the occasional T7.

I rate the Eradicator better, due to how cheap it is, and the ability to fire the cannon in melee. That shooting in melee ability comes up super regularly. The Demolisher should rate its damage against Intercessors and Terminators as not quite as good, as flat 3 is much better than a d6. A d6 offers slightly higher average damage, but reliability is much more important against 2 and 3W targets.

Took my Leman Russ tanks to a big tournament here in Norway, and I found the Vanquisher was my least valuable unit. Most targets it wanted to shoot at either had invulnerable saves or ways to get invulnerable saves. Out of 6 matches, in 3 the Vanquisher cannon did 0 damage due to missing shots, failing to wound or save rolls stopping the wound. It's heavy bolters did far more damage than the main gun over the entire tournament.

Running a cheaper variant means you being able to run an additional Castellan or troops choice, but conversely it means that if you're picking one it's probably because you want a tank, but NEED the character or infantry. Which should make you think again about the choices you made in your list building that led you to that point.

Exterminators have been such a neat surprise in this edition. Going from next to useless in 9th to the incredibly reliable backbone of an army in 10th has been a blast.

I think it's wild they've been almost entirely useless their entire existence as an option for the LRBT and in 10th became one of the top three turrets. It's crazy.

I would have loved to also see some comparisons to other fractions tanks, especially the vanquisher to say like the hammerhead and the SM lancer... I feel it would demonstrate the big guard problem very well...

What problem would that be? I don't think comparing a Lancer to a LR is fair considering you get two free sponsors and a hull gun and a HK missile. A Lancer just gets storm bolters and a HK missile.

Have we looked at the fact that there is a void of weapon keywords in AM in general. Like, why does hardly any Russ turret have the heavy keyword? Where is the anti-vehicle/monster and devestating wounds keyword on the vanquisher, same question for the shadowsword.

I wish GW would just charge points for adding sponsons or maybe give the Russ an extra ability if you opt not to take sponsons (eg turret gets +1BS). It’s annoying that they are sort of mandatory (unless you want to handicap yourself by not taking them)

Don't think I ever see it pop up on lists. In strat reserves with a heavy bolter for 36" removal of cover, it seems like it has real play to me

I almost like the vanquisher at 155 but statistically I just don’t believe it can work (even heavily buffed by other models negating the points gain). I think the source is the single shot which makes the gun pretty unreliable anyway. I love the exterminator because the 3 damage profile is just very consistent and versatile.

It's so incredibly swingy. One game it killed two Fire Prisms and a War Walker. The next it missed every hit or wound and only killed a one wound Helbrute all game!

I guess if you want to embrace your inner Ork Warboss, the Vanquisher is not bad. Can definitely be a huge threat to anything big without an Inv save, and it is fairly cheap when you consider its toughness and all the other weapons it has(2 plasma cannons, 1 las cannon, 1 heavy stubber and 1 Hunter-Killer missile). Even models with Inv saves might just get unlucky and get deleted unexpectedly if both the Las Cannon and Vanquisher Cannon goes through and rolls well on the damage. Also, you have ways to make it more reliable. Give it a tank order so it becomes BS3+, remain stationary(+1 to hit) and have a scout sentinel spot for it(reroll 1s to hit). The Vanquisher cannon itself usually wounds on a 2+ or 3+ and can be rerolled, and if need be, you can have it set up, so that Fields of Fire is on your target(-1 extra AP to your attacks).

The most reliable and udefull IMHO is Exterminator its gun is nice due to twin linked and its ability goes well as damage boost in general Battle cannon is quite reliable hitting on +3 rerolling if on an objective only ap1 but fields of fire and the exterminator will give him a good boost Demolisher a good ability if things go bad but mostly it is the nly leman russ that can reliable wound things on +3 abeit the damage being d6 is quite swingy (no i dont count the vanquisher it is the cheapest and even then you dont see it due to something, it is extremelly likely it does nothing its 155 points only becouse it is a russ hull i dont think ignore invuls would be advisable but at least give it devastating wounds in a similar way to the rail gun and a price increase would ake it a way better option)

I sat through a Mordian Glory video on this topic, and I already knew that I was going to be sad by the end of this one. Your math + description made some of them come off better than his, but I'm still a bit sad. I really just don't get why GW INSISTS on the Vanquisher being crap? It had that window, in 9e, where it was scary, and I don't know if GW just got a bunch of letters complaining that they had sucked for so long that no one had picked that pattern, and didn't want to have to buy a whole new Russ, just to chase what was good, but the Shadowsword is...decent?, so why can't the Vanquisher have a shot? I assume that it is mostly they don't want tanks to be one-shotted; that's why the Toughness all went up, and stripped melta if most of its point, but that's literally what the Vanquisher is for. I wish its special gave it rerolls to hit if stationary, or something else in the force did, just so it could still hang back, out of range, and pelt stuff. Tau rail cannons, and ion cannons, get to do this, so why not Guard? I know it is whiny, but I just like something that can hang back, and pick its targets. I was also sick of the Demolisher being the king Russ, which it mostly is again, even as the Tank Commander in it is ripping off the Commissar, and saying "take me in closer; I want to hit it with my sword!", due to the Demolisher's short range. If I'm sad though, it's for the Executioner. I loved the glow up it got, in 9e, so of course it's sort of back in the bin here. What's wrong with a Guard tank having an actual futuristic, energy-based weapon as its turret? It's dangerous to always have to overcharge it, but increasing Toughness basically made you have to. I love plasma, so I'm sad that this, too, got reconquered by the classic Russ, and the Demolisher. Still, since many Guard forces are defined by their tanks, as their primary damage dealers, I am glad that most of them are useful, and the best ones are simply good, and competitive. Guard don't always have that going in spades, when Space Marines are required to br better than them. Thank you for the comprehensive video! You have to think of the units in context of the army as a whole not entirely in a vacuum. While all these calculations are awesome and we can learn a lot from them, they aren't end all be all. Vanquishers need to be in a spot where taking 1 is swingy, maxing out (3) is strong and not BUSTED. Having 3 Vanq Cannons and 3 Lascannons means 6 Hi powered shots, not including Hunter killer missile. And sir, what you are describing is entirely possible, they sit back, hit on 2's because of heavy and order, and a scout sentinel gives reroll 1's to hit. It is essentially, re roll to hit, cus you can only miss on 1. As for the executioner, It needs to be used to finish off units: 10 necron warriros, 5 MEQ, 5/10 Terminator Squads, Tanks and Monsters that have 4-6 wounds. Think using a manticore first, and then the executioner. I feel like most of the tanks are in a spot where taking 3 of one is a possible strat, but it isn't end all be all, auto include, MUST take 3 Vanquishers cus they each can one shot a tank reliably each turn, nah its more like 3 Vanquishers TOGETHER can take out a big ol monster reliably or two with some luck.

You can also look at it this way. The Vanquisher is one of the cheapest platform for bringing double plasma cannons(or heavy bolters), a las cannon and a heavy stubber(and hunter-killer missile) on the table. This gives you a lot of potential damage to various targets. Overcharged Plasma against marines, or regular shots+Heavy stubber vs regular infantry. Las Cannon+Hunter-killer for popping tanks. Nothing the other LRs cannot do, but you do it for 155 pts. On top of that, you also get a long range and punchy(but a bit swingy) main gun. The Vanquisher alone is quite capable of 1-shotting a lot of stuff with a bit of luck. If a las cannon shot goes through, it averages 4.5 damage. If a Vanquisher shot goes through, it averages 9.5 damage. If both of them goes through, it is 14 average damage, which either kills or puts most targets into a "damaged" state. By comparison, the regular LR requires to roll high on its battle cannon(d6+3 attacks) to get enough shots to hit and wound(Strength 10 will struggle against dedicated tanks) and with only -1 AP, a lot of those will be saved. And it still needs 3 of them to go through to hit the "average" of the Vanquisher Cannon. Of course, the battle cannon will do better against hordes of infantry, but that is not why we pick the Vanquisher anyway. So yeah, it is a bit swingy, but it is long range and a huge potential threat. In truth, the only "swingy part" is if the opponent has Inv. saves or not. It is fairly easy to make hits and wounds with the main gun(if you help it a bit), so it comes down to the saving throws. The only thing I want for it really, is Devastating Wounds, for a chance to ignore saves completely.

Demolisher should have a shorter range like multi melta 18". There not enough there to make you weigh pros and cons compared to others. Its just straight up better than the others. Points are the only determining factor. Lore wise its a bunker buster. Special rule should be that targets dont receive benefit of cover.

So if you really want, tank commander with grand Strategist for 220 points, give them a Plasma cannon, that way if they kill themselves they get to smack one more time with the cannon

Yeah, I run only with demolishers. . . because the other guns are useless compared to it .-. the other guns need a little buff. Also i use 2 demolisher and 2 rogal dorns

Generally if you forget the sustained hits rule then yes, but its not completely bad at adding to anti infantry firepower.

Not really. 36" range on a non-hazardous weapon that can deal 2 damage. And it is always 3 attacks, no matter the target model count(Plasma cannons can be a bit swingy). With Lethal Hits on stationary(as well as sustained hits1), it can sometimes do a surprising amount of damage with a few lucky rolls. Also, Heavy Bolters can be used within engagement range, while Plasma Cannons can not(due to Blast keyword). BUT, it is fairly low AP, so they are most effective if you have ways to improve the AP(Fields of Fire and/or an assisting Exterminator LR). In which case I would say it is the best "all-rounder". That said, you can get Heavy Bolters on other units as well, and you generally want weapons that compliment your Tank's role. Close range armour busting(Tanks or Terminators) = Multimeltas due to their high AP and potential high damage. Close range anti-infantry/dangerous overwatch potential = Heavy Flamers Fire Support from range against single models = Heavy Bolters Fire Support from range against squads = Plasma Cannons

Kind of bummed how the Vanquisher became so weak. I used to always use them for Tank Commanders due to the higher chance to hit and the main gun used to be good or at least work against infantry as well. Now while it is decent against vehicles and monsters it’s not the best option and it’s only use against troops is to make sure one model REALLY goes away.

@@keyanklupacs6333 The Vanquisher cannon only gets one shot. It’s a very powerful shot but it’s only a single one, making it very weak against infantry units. Long ago it used to get a blast attack as well as the AT shot. It does get a +1 to hit but only if the tank remains stationary, which isn’t always an option. And now it doesn’t even ignore invulnerable saves, so even then it might get stopped cold. It is the cheapest LR variant but you might as well pay more points to get a main gun more generally useful and like the video said there’s no reason to take it on a Tank Commander anymore.

@@PitFriend1 Yes basically no point on a tank commander. But a Vanquisher will get 3 anti tank shots for 1 round with the rockets. Then it gets 2, Vanq cannon and Lascannon. It is cheap as to encourage more than 1. So with 3 you get 6 anti tank shots a turn, not to mention heavy bolters and Stubber if you are so inlclined to have the tank be able to take on every single target. Meanwhile its meant to be an anti tank gun so id run extra mulit meltas and not care If the tanks need to get close or die because they are cheap.

Nope. The tank commander can only give orders to a unit with the squadron keyword, which the tank commander himself doesn't have.

So... Vanquisher still kind of sucks, no surprise here. Punisher is still good against light targets but feels useless against anything else. Eradicator is still overly specialised. Exterminator is a nice surprise - considering it is now actually fairly versatile, though it still doesn't quite live up to its lore role of being a heavy infantry and light vehicle shredder. That being said, it seems like the most well rounded of the bunch at the moment, especially considering that it has built-in synergy with other units, which makes it even nicer. Executioner is very good as always. And Demolisher is still overall best, if you don't care about range.
