In Norse mythology, Dökkálfar ("Dark Elves") and Ljósálfar ("Light Elves") are two contrasting types of elves; the dark elves dwell within the earth and have a dark complexion, while the light elves live in Álfheimr, and are "fairer than the sun to look at". The Ljósálfar and the Dökkálfar are attested in the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson, and in the late Old Norse poem Hrafnagaldr Óðins. Scholars have produced theories about the origin and implications of the dualistic concept.
The appearance of elves in sagas is closely defined by genre. The Sagas of Icelanders, Bishops' sagas, and contemporary sagas, whose portrayal of the supernatural is generally restrained, rarely mention álfar, and then only in passing. But although limited, these texts provide some of the best evidence for the presence of elves in everyday beliefs in medieval Scandinavia. They include a fleeting mention of elves seen out riding in 1168 (in Sturlunga saga); mention of an álfablót ("elves' sacrifice") in Kormáks saga; and the existence of the euphemism ganga álfrek ('go to drive away the elves') for "going to the toilet" in Eyrbyggja saga.
The Kings' sagas include a rather elliptical but widely studied account of an early Swedish king being worshipped after his death and being called Ólafr Geirstaðaálfr ('Ólafr the elf of Geirstaðir'), and a demonic elf at the beginning of Norna-Gests þáttr.
The legendary sagas tend to focus on elves as legendary ancestors or on heroes' sexual relations with elf-women. Mention of the land of Álfheimr is found in Heimskringla while Þorsteins saga Víkingssonar recounts a line of local kings who ruled over Álfheim, who since they had elven blood were said to be more beautiful than most men. According to Hrólfs saga kraka, Hrolfr Kraki's half-sister Skuld was the half-elven child of King Helgi and an elf-woman (álfkona). Skuld was skilled in witchcraft (seiðr). Accounts of Skuld in earlier sources, however, do not include this material. The Þiðreks saga version of the Nibelungen (Niflungar) describes Högni as the son of a human queen and an elf, but no such lineage is reported in the Eddas, Völsunga saga, or the Nibelungenlied.The relatively few mentions of elves in the chivalric sagas tend even to be whimsical.
In his Rerum Danicarum fragmenta (1596) written mostly in Latin with some Old Danish and Old Icelandic passages, Arngrímur Jónsson explains the Scandinavian and Icelandic belief in elves (called Allffuafolch). Both Continental Scandinavia and Iceland have a scattering of mentions of elves in medical texts, sometimes in Latin and sometimes in the form of amulets, where elves are viewed as a possible cause of illness. Most of them have Low German connections.

I wonder if this goes all the way back to the Indo-Europeans. In rural Ireland until relatively recently there many stories of people being lured by music or shining fairies into mounds. Usually time passes differently in the mound and a night dancing with the fairies turns out to be many years in the outside world. Lot of similarities

I used to do social work among the Plains Cree people (Indians) in Alberta Canada. Little people as they call them are a super important part of Cree spirituality. While Cree religion doesn't really use the idea of good and evil in the Christian sense, they do categorize the use of spirit power to influence human outcomes as good medicine and bad medicine based on the intended outcome. Cree religion recognizes two different kinds of little people which can be distinguished by the shape of their ears. The Cree traditionalists I know associate the ones with pointed ears with good medicine, and the ones with rounded ears with bad medicine. The Cree understood all of them to be potentially dangerous, especially around children. I've encountered a rounded eared entity once. It was more a shadow than a little man, and I felt its presence more than a saw it. It was not a pleasant feeling, so I get the association with bad medicine. I have no doubt these things are real, and I totally get why the Germanic folks would not want to have them around. While some Cree traditionalists invoke the "good ones" in their rituals, most prefer to have nothing to do with any of them. And once a medicine man or woman gets associated with little people, they tend to eventually get accused of bad medicine.

this is an interesting topic, in traditional brewing here in norway, up until a few decades ago you always sacrifised a bit of the wort/beer to keep the trolls/spirits away, one account they throw a ladle of wort into the fireplace, and some speak of pouring the ale onto a hill or burial mound on the farm, sometimes the burial mound of the one who set up the farm to have him continue keeping the spirits away

Is the Nokken the same creature as a Water Nymph? My neighbor was from Scandinavia and used to tell my kids stories of Nokken drowning children if they went down to the lake by themselves. She had stories of Trolls and all sorts of creatures. My kids absolutely loved her and her stories. They’re now grown in their thirties handing them down to my grandkids which I’ve always thought was very cool.

In some traditions, yes. But you also have the Sjöra. Their functions are a bit different. The Sjöra more often helped fishermen who were lost at sea. In exchange for clothing (usually mittens), she would tell them to not go in a particular direction because of bad weather.

16:33 This is super interesting to me. A couple of years back I read in a local book from 1926, called Tinn Soga, about a stone called "Kopusteinen" (The Cup Stone). This stone has a flat top with 10-11 cup/bowl shapes of various sizes (the book says 10, but the included image show 11 cups). They attribute the stone to the bronze age and the worship of gods, but I don't know how accurate this is. They also say that in Sweden such cup stones are called "älfkvarnar". On the side of the stone there is a plaque talking about it's use as a sacrificial stone in heathen times. I'm living just 20 minutes drive away, so naturally I have visited it.

It may be the other way around, with christian beliefs of Angels and demons being affected by indo European beliefs, especially Persian.

I'm definitely open to that possibility. It's just that the academic consensus is Christian influence. But yeah, even Ragnarök, which has been argued for connections to Christianity, can be argued to be 100% Heathen. For instance: While the idea of a folk being torn apart and loyalty destroyed exists in Mark 13:12, it also appears in the Iranian eschatology, as well. Thus, this could point to an Indo-European origin. When the Midgard serpent breaks free in Völuspá, he acts similar to the Iranian monster Azdahāg and Satan, who if often referred to as a dragon or an old serpent in Revelation 20:7. Similarly, the battle of the gods in Ragnarök could also be reflected in the Iranian Great Battle Ardī ī Wuzurg during the end times. This could also be seen in the doctrine of world historical ages in Hindu tradition. With the remarks of a terrifying winter coming, the sun and moon becoming eclipsed, heavenly bodies falling, the earth sinking into the sea and fire devastating the universe and world tree, it seems that there would be a direct parallel to Mark 13:24-25; Revelation 11:6 and 2 Peter 3:10. However, one must also bear in mind that these concepts may have been rooted in Indo-European tradition since the cyclical destruction of the universe is described in the same manner in India. The earth rising again and the return of Baldr and Höðr are also difficult to deal with. While Christianity tells us in Revelation 21:1 that a new heaven and earth will be born, we also see parallels to this in Völuspá and the India cyclical destruction of the universe which is renewed with a new creation of the world with gods, humans and creatures.

In a very strange sense, yes. But it's from the Latin form Albus ('white'). If it were Germanic, we would expect that , which is TECHNICALLY in PGmc to shift to an in Old English. Great observation!

@@royalwayne7244 Right, well I think Norse (Vikings, Thor) is trending these last 10 years or so. Anything associated with Germany still makes a majority picture Hitler and Nazis, so not many want anything to do with a word like Germanic. And like others have said, Nordic people ARE Germanic. We are all one people; one big tribe broken into smaller tribes. We were Germanic living on the continent first before moving up north into the Nordic countries. Then our ancestors were forced south during the little ice age and moved back up north a second time once the ice melted.

You blokes are Legends that was an Awesome interview those dark elves you've mentioned was also a part of the inspiration behind the little creatures known as a gremlins which started in the 1920s during WW2 with British (RAF) pilots gremlins being mischief maker's pulling parts from aircrafts that made them crash their plane's but in reality was due to careless pilots not doing a proper inspection on their aircraft or so I've been told by some of the old RAAF fella's at the RSL club here Australia

Especially important male ancestors, buried in burialmounds. The female matriliniar ancestors were collectively known as the 'Dísir'. Check Arith Härger on KZfaq for deeper academic approaches to the Àlfar and Dísir for more information.

This reminds me of a Jordan Maxwell talk i once saw. He said lots of words to describe something important begin with El, especially when describing people. Elder, elavate, elect, electric, eliminate, element, elixir. Maybe ELves are ELectromagnetic beings??

This sounds weird to me. I mean, I do acknowledge sound symbolism is a thing, but in this case, it just comes off to me as a bit ad hoc. For instance, while this may work for modern English, all of the other Germanic languages spell it with an : álfar, Albtraum, etc.

@@scottt.shellcontinentalger2464 Yeah you make a good point. I love learning languages, I've studied around 20 up till now. I especially love learning how the Romance languages and Germanic ones, all have multiple threads that weaves through them all. Then those two distinct language streams connect to create English. The modern spellings may differ, but you can almost see the linguistic routes our ancestors travelled, carrying their language and culture with them.

It seems to me that Elves are the status of your ancestors/father. They tempt with riches as the son of a noble man is tempted with the empire/kingdom. the tradition of elf watching is a lesson on not spending your fathers riches upon inheritance. We all know how common is story of how spoiled sons squander the riches of their successful fathers. One must resist, wait, and live as ones own self until the reputation of the father no longer is the foundation of the kingdom. Only then will the son be able to have the riches be truly his. The bringing of disease and madness is likely a reference to both the danger of your father having skeletons in his closet that may present after his passing and to the existence of genetic disease.

Sounds like elves were demons. In Celtic mythology fairies/the Fae or the Sidhe were spirits that could cause mischief and occasionally mated with human women which was how Merlin was fathered, he was part fae/demon.

There are different kind of elf’s . There are different Kind of daemons. Some daemons are more evil ,some are not so evil. Spirit being,different spieces of spirits. All religions had the same knowleg in their clans. Now we have lost IT,. only fragments. of knowledge left. The bibel is my best source. Speaks of different spieces
