I mean technically if you're a silicon based lifeform, you're almost definitely an astronaut too, you know? Unless those guys already have portals, in which case we would need to have a discussion of semantics regarding whether entering a interstellar portal/wormhole to travel through space counts as being an astronaut or not, and personally I would say it technically counts (as you _did_ travel through space after all) but I don't want to be the guy arguing hypothetical wizard astronaut semantics on a technicality because that guy is the worst.

Although the game penalizes you for lateral G's more than vertical ones, the human body is actually more capable of lateral g as long as you're properly secured so you don't hit anything with the side of your head. Race car drivers can experience up to 6 lateral g's during turns. I think 10g will still kill you, but the maximum threshold falls off more slowly over time. You could probably endure 6 lateral g's for longer than you could 6 vertical g's. The human tolerance for longitudinal (forward-backward) g's is much higher than either one of those - you can handle 20g for a few seconds and be okay - although RCT doesn't model those correctly and I'm pretty sure Marcel even did a video showing how comically huge the ingame values are when you actually calculate them. Forget 20, more like 2000.

My favorite ride to exert max g-forces on guests is a ride popularized by streamer, Vargskelethor Joel, it's called, "DA PO PO BE FAST ON YO ASS." It's a looping rollercoaster with two large turn pieces, a small right loop, a small left loop, and two more large turn pieces. When it is set to powered launch mode (passing station), launches at 573mph, and has over 5 laps, it has almost 40 positive vertical Gs.

Whatever is left of the guests at the end of the ride is then ejected from the vehicle by the amazingly powerful station brakes. A specific scene from The Expanse comes to mind... 🤔 I wonder what the G-force numbers would be if the game counted that.

For context: At about 3-4 G's; your going to need to do some leg squeezes to stay conscious for a decent period of time, this is also about the same amount of G's that an astronaut will experience as they enter orbit, although they are lying down during it so its a bit different. At around 6G's; you can no longer breath normally due to your diaphragm not being strong enough to overcome the forces, although theres still methods of breathing, most involve an oxygen tube and making a specific noise to force air out of your lungs. This is also the G force that a Ju-87 (Stuka) dive bomber pilot would experience in WW2, although they had automatic systems in the aircraft to pull out of the dive because the pilot *did* black out. At 10 G's you reach the limitation of many early fighter aircrafts airframe (the components of the aircraft would bend / snap) and at 18 G's its basically agreed that if your in an airplane your as good as dead since you generally need to be awake to pull up. The AIM-9B Sidewinder (one of the earliest missiles used in A2A combat) can pull a max of 10 G's, the AIM-9H could do 20, the AIM-9L could do 30, a variant of the AIM-120 AMRAAM can allegedly do up to 35 depending on airpseed, and the current AIM-9X can do an estimated (but still somewhat classified) 65G's maximum. Needless to say, these coasters are absolutely insane EDIT: To put this into perspective; the F-22 (Which is "Hypermanouverable" is rated to just 9G's (depending on fuel load and weight), the F-35 is rated for about 9.5, the Su-27 is capable of an alleged 9, and the Su-57 ("muh hypermanouverability stronk" russian enjoys can rejoice) is said to be capable of over 9.0 (although its very likely thats propoganda since they also claim to have more than 70 of them and as far as is known they have at most 40). Aircraft often can survive 1.5-2x their rated G pull, but modern aircraft use a computer system to make sure they dont overload on G forces, so unless the pilot turns that setting off, they wont pull more. Oh, and negative G's are significantly harder to deal with

Technically, the G force numbers are survivable over a very short period of time. Two time F1 champ Max Verstappen crashed at 51g in 2021 at Silverstone and didn't miss a race. Indy driver Kenny Bräck famously survived a 214g crash at Texas Motor Speedway. The cars are designed to keep you from squishing, and roller coasters don't have as much anti-squish. Also, in a loop it's too much for any anti-squish system.

1:12 This is where we can be glad (and Marcel will be sad) that we have fake physics here. In reality, these accelerations are proportional to speed squared. Real numbers would be in the vicinity of 10 000 g by the end of the video. 6:46 Banking your turns like a normie!
@michaelfjmusic
@michaelfjmusic Жыл бұрын
A potential correction: in real life, g-forces induced by turns are proportional to the *square* of the speed. The equation is acceleration = speed^2 / radius (and then divide the result by 9.81 to get g-forces). So, doubling the speed should *quadruple* the g-forces. I'm not sure if that's how the game calculates it, but that's how it works in real life.
@yablecki
@yablecki Жыл бұрын
It looks like the game is calculating gs incorrectly, possibly only a v/r instead of v^2/r. Let's take the 400 km/h coaster for an example. ((400,000 m/h) / 3600 s/h)^2 = 12345 m^2/s^2. Assuming the loops have a 10 meter radius (it's really probably less, looking at them, but let's assume 10m to be conservative), this results in an acceleration of 1234.5 m/s^2, or 124.6g.
@notarealname1881
@notarealname1881 10 ай бұрын
Yes, that's how it should work but the game's G force calculation is wrong. G forces in game increase linearly with speed, which lets you get away with some ridiculous stuff. It's quite annoying, because I'd like to see some larger radius turn pieces added but they would get G forces that are far too low.

When you're talking about G forces, it would be helpful to compare the numbers to real-life numbers that are captured in coasters, jet airplanes, and rockets, since these are the only devices that can come close to replicating Rollercoaster Tycoon's forces. It also might help to show what an equivalent G-force would be on a human body in free-fall hitting the ground. Not too get too visceral, but check out Mythbusters' methodologies for determining lethal force impacts. Very clean and clear way to describe what would happen to a human who experiences those forces...without the gore.

About increasing the speed of the coaster with guests: Couldn't you (theoretically) make sure to only allow the heaviest guests to board the train, with stuff like weight sorting rides that you have showcased on this channel before? Whether a G-force is lethal depends not only on its absolute value, but also on how long one is exposed to it. Humans can survive G-forces up to 100 as long as they are exposed to them for only a tiny fraction of a second. The world record for the highest G-force ever survived by a human being is even higher at an incredible 180. That human being was David Purley, a Formula 1 driver who crashed his car full throttle into a guard rail. He suffered various fractures and other injuries, but he survived.

I once set out to make the deadliest coaster back in the day. The vertical drop coaster I think is the one that has the special block brake that will always stop it immediately. Other coasters normally go through brakes if they're going fast enough, but this one in particular always brought the car to a dead stop. So, up to the height limit, down to the lowest underground, and BAM, instant stop. There's no surviving that.

Oh Marcel, you brushed the lunar strain into a charming yet subtle approach to foddering guests for our experimental entertainment. 😋 TL'DR Visualizing a snow shovel and an astronaut forensics agent chiseling off pancaked remains of amusement park guests made my morning lmao😝

Quick reference on G forces: G Force is an acceleration function representing the gravitational constant of 9.8 m/s Vertical G's: Forces going vertical. A positive g-force corresponds to a downward force, and a negative force sends you up. When standing still, you experience 1 vertical G from Earth's gravitational force pulling you downward. 0 G's creates the feeling of weightlessness in a rider. Lateral G's: Forces from the side. Positive is to the left, negative is to the right. Note that RCT2 uses absolute values when finding the maximum lat. G's, so you can't tell if the offending area is a left or right turn. Longitudinal G's: Forces going forward and backward. Longitudinal G's are not in RCT1 and 2, but they are in other park sim games like Parkitect and Planet Coaster (where they're called "Forward Gs").

They give less G's than small unbanked turns, so it's not necessary. Only the tiny turn gives more.

Fun video! Does the order of elements at the bottom of the drop affect the forces at all? e.g. if you put the unbanked turn first vs. after the vertical loop, do the lateral g's change? I imagine it would be very small.
