We learned about this in a human behavior class in HS, but Dr. Marks def explained it better haha I always remembered: “Babies are all Id. They want what they want when they want it.” That convo ushered in the nature v. nurture convo.

Dr. Marks: This was great! Can you do a video on what the ego is by other definitions? Like what then does it mean to be egotistical, have a really big ego, get your ego hurt, a boost to one's ego, etc.?

So, ego is not your enemy?
@shorty63136
@shorty63136 8 ай бұрын
Bingo. Our society treats the concept of ego as a wholly bad thing when it’s not. But also, the *behaviors* that we sometime attribute to egotistical behavior is actually just as*h*le behavior -or- someone having a higher sense of self than *we* feel they should have (people seeking to make another person feel small/keep them in their place/humble them). I like that Dr. Marks used a “judge” imagery to represent the ego bc it’s like keeping yourself in check based on the values of your super-ego.

Is there a term for becoming more aware of your ID and modifying the behaviour based on observation?

This is the best explanation of this I have ever heard. I always became confused when this was explained in psychology class. ❤

This is a great video! Very informative, concise, and understandable. I notice you said the superego is completely conscious but isn't it partly conscious?

Freud is important to the history of psychology, but otherwise entirely obsolete, right?
@Catlily5

I hope that Freud is mostly obsolete. He had a couple of good ideas but most of them were nonsense.

No. His sample was skewed, mostly neurotic repressed Viennese. But he saw the core of human psyche. We just can't handle it.
