This video is about the rules on mooring for continuous cruisers and people with a home moorings. To be clear is this is my perspective, the rules as I understand them please also do your own research if you are going to be a continuous cruisers or especially if you have a home mooring.
so I am a continuous cruisers in the canal and river trust and so that is primarily what I am talking about.
I am always asked about how often I move, if I have to pay to stop every time, if I can just move back and forth all the time , so I am hoping to answer those questions today.
thanks for watching

I would have thought that mooring in one place by a tow path, would help the CRT because you wouldn't be using the locks and this would save on maintenance. As for council tax, when I lived on a boat thirty years ago in Sussex it was called the Poll Tax. When I received a bill, I phoned the authority and asked what it was for, they said street lighting and rubbish collection etc, I said fantastic as the mud berth I was in on the river had no lighting and I had to dispose of my own trash, so I asked when they would start work on the lighting and what day they would come to my boat to pick up my rubbish. After this phone call they never sent me another bill.

+LinuxUser119 if your mooring in one place all the time and want to be you cold be spending few hundred a month on a mooring
@LinuxUser119
@LinuxUser119 6 жыл бұрын
ThisNarrowboatAdventure Yes, I understand the charges for permanent moorings , what I don't understand is the logic behind it from the CRT. Obviously a marina can charge what they like, but if you just stick pegs in a tow path and want to stay for a week, month or year, where is the harm in this? After all you are paying the CRT to use the waterways, and the CRT's definition of continuous cruising are ambiguous to say the least.

@@LinuxUser119 I would imagine the canals would become choked up with liveaboards that never move. In a way I understand why they're enforcing the 14 day rule or move to a marina. It may be had to invisage now but eventually the whole canal system in the cities and towns would be clogged up with pernanantly moored boats.

Hello, I am Graham, I live in Cape Town South Africa, the most beautiful city in the world. on a recent vlog seen by me you mentioned a web site that has narrow boats for sale, the name ends in duck, I did not catch the first part of the name, could you please enlighten me as I am looking for a boat to purchase in the next 2 or 3 years once I have saved up enough. I have found some of your vlogs quite interesting and do enjoy watching your and the dark destroyer, David, doing your thing and informing the world about your antics. Hi and thank's for the video. I'm in the process of purchasing a 70ft narrowboat, I too will be a continus cruiser but on the Bridgewater Canal so need a platinum licence (about £1750 per year just for the Bridgewater) which oon that canal allows 28 days in one place (may help people going on the Bridgewater) I get my boat in November and you mention about moving from A, B, C, D, E now if you know the area would this mean I can move from lets say Altrincham, Timperley, Sale, Stretford then back to Altrincham and back up the canal?? Please help anyne as I cannot get a home mooring between Stretford to Altrincham as I need to be close to each of these areas as I work near Manchester Airport and rely on Family and public transport as I am not allowed to drive due to ill health,

I’m a Canadian who’d love to retire to a narrow boat. I’m a follower of a number of channels. I never will due to $$$ however I can dream. 😍😊🇨🇦 Herein Canada on the Trent Severn you buy a lock pass daily, weekly, not sure beyond that. If you moor it’s probably at a lock and it’s a nightly fee. Otherwise we all moor in marinas, and in winter the boat comes out of the water, of course.

Hi Jasmin, I'm watching your videos as part of my research of living on a Narrowboat (as well as enjoying your general life content of course), and this video has answered questions that many people have about continuous cruising. Unless You are coming Through Oxford they have Willow Trees that hang down Nearly touching the water (There are videos here of It). Very Pretty to see. But as they Roll over the Boat they Drip with thousands of Little Spiders. You get covered In them they get everywhere. All You got think about Is there are NO Poisonous Insects even Spiders that can do You harm Is this Country. If It was Australia I would understand how People are frightened of them. But here In the UK It's not be Scared of them. In face Like She said here they are Your Friends. Be a Man and brave Nature.

I think I understand the difference between canal and river (under CRT), canal: mooring on one side private on the other, rivers: private on both sides i.e. no ware to moor, but what about river-navigations like on the river Lee.
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure 7 жыл бұрын
qwert trewq you can almost always moor on the tow path side but rearly in the off side. the CRT have paid for full time moorings on the off side sometimes. the river lea is CRT jurisdiction. other places are not depends where you are.

Think of the water ways as high ways would you like to try to go to the mall and find that you can't get on the high way as it is already full of people who just want to park and live in their car's or van's. Well I probably shouldn't say to much as I don't live there and I don't need to deal with those problems. Just I guess trying to see it from both sides as a boater in the USA
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure 5 жыл бұрын
there is always a huge gap in the middle of the canal for people when they are cruising so I'm not entirely sure I understand your metaphor maybe its more like when you drive down a normal street and see people parked on the street out side their house and you drive past them, maybe have a look at some of my cruising videos it will she you the moored boats don't impact the ones cruising. also I would never think of waterways as "highways",I would want to get off the motor way as fast as possible as they are smelly and unattractive, but the canal you can enjoy the journey.

I believe there were rules (which may have been superceded) that you had to move out of the Parish after 14 days, and into another Parish, and not allowed to return for x amount of time (unknown). The requirement to move 20 miles a year doesn't really sound like 'continuous cruising', but what do I know!

No it's the same price and same license. The big difference is that if you have a 'home mooring' you don't have to meet with the bona fide cruising and travel the distance / range that CRT require of those who don't have a mooring and are 'continuous cruisers'. Boats with home moorings still have to comply with the 14 day rule when away from their mooring though. NB Disclaimer : I'm fallible so always check these things for yourself just to be sure 8--) PS Always enjoy watching your videos.

1) I am not in charge look at this canalrivertrust.org.uk/refresh/media/thumbnail/30348-continuous-cruising-faqs.pdf 2) I believe you can turn around BUT if I was in a situation where I only wanted to be near one place I would seriously look at getting a mooring. we did a 58 mile range last year and didn't go in a strait line more of a zig zag, we took the boat down to weddings we went up to some lakes at the end of summer we took her to a boat yard a bit further away because we like the area and like to sure the boat for what it is made for cruising! we where never more than an hour and a half / two hours to get to work and frankly for us after two weeks mostly we are ready to move on. for us moving is the joy of boating not the sacrifice.

hi ! you have to move at least a 20 mile range per year so you will be close to kings cross some of the time and father away other times , and the likely hood is they will make you move farther in the future. in london we do between totenham hale and cowroast but we always do a much longer trip or two for fun. if the commute is an issue consider a mooring!

Olly Burton Continuous cruising has ruined London canals. Nose to tail scruffy boats that constantly jostle for any available space and really don't comply with the spirt of the rules means visiting boaters don't stand a chance. If you are tied to one location for work realistically continuous cruising is not going to work. There is a reason residential moorings in London cost upwards of £10,000 a year. Anyone who thinks they can bent the rules and live permanently on the regents canal in the heart of one of the worlds most expensive cities is taking the piss frankly, and selfishly ruining the canal for everyone else.

As I understand it, you only pay Council Tax on a Home Mooring if you're actually living onboard your boat. If you have a non-residential Cruising Berth, then you're not subject to Council Tax (which you'll be paying at your main residence, anyway).

Council Tax is for residences, so if isn't your home ... think of it like a caravan, Now. it may not be your primary home so, for those instances. you pay CT at different rates, depending on how much time you actuallt spend living aboard (for instance, you may live in sunny Dorset (with it's wonderful Bulbarrow Hill) (Let's see if anyone actually gets that reference), but stay in London, say, during the week, whilst at work ...). I'll try to find a reference point for you ... :)

What are the rules of mooring? She who gets there first wins!🚣🏾🚣🏼🚣🏼🚣🏼. If you use a fixed winter mooring you might consider one of the fuel boats that have gas, coal, wood etc to visit you if your going to be there for the winter. JMHO Jim Derry, New Hampshire

Is it nowhere to be found or am I looking wrong? How much is the boat license? Also 20miles is really not much at all. If you're actually interested in the boat lifestyle you'll make it even without trying.
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure

it depends on boat length. we did much more than 20 miles too.

No problem for many but it would make it more difficult for people who work in a fixed location or have elderly parents to keep an eye on for example.

What do people do who live in a conventional home and use the boat for cruising at weekends? In other words how do they moor during the week?

I would imagine most have a leisure mooring (much cheaper than a live aboard mooring i think) or maybe cc ?

So what is it the trust is trying to accomplish? Are they trying to get boats that are not new and luxurious off the canals? Do old beater boats upset the "ruling class"?
@ladygardener100
@ladygardener100 6 жыл бұрын
they are trying to make sure boats comply with the terms and conditions of the licence [depends which licence] which include an Act of Parliament. The canals round London and in other places are used by people who do not want to move, especially if they have a nice spot with or near facilities like water. This is purely selfish and too many people think that a boat is a cheap life, in the most expensive city in the world. Ihe CRT would probably like boaters who are not genuine navigators to moor in a marina. This would take pressure of the canals and the utilities,
@davesmith-rs1yo

CTR receive nearly half the mooring fee for each boat in a marina, so a large marina says 250 berths would pay CTR about 40'000 per month. This is why they hassle continuous cruisers because they don't get as much out of them. CTR is very greedy, they are not very charitable, they are obsessed with money, the directors and bigwigs have massive salaries, charity is just to exploit the obvious loopholes. Also, they do as little maintenance as possible, preferring to let things break first rather than maintain. They dredged part of the K&A a few months ago, took the sludge from the middle of the canal and just dumped it in the water along the towpath side making it even harder to Moore. Recently the local councils have been expressing an interest, pretending to care about the welfare of boaters and if they would like permanent home moorings? The real reason for this is they are aware that many have escaped to the canal for a cheaper and freer lifestyle, so they cant allow that when there's money to be had from home moorings and council tax. I would advise, warn any live-aboard boaters to tell the council to stick it and have no contact with them, they will only ruin this last little bit of freedom we have.

I know you travel further so this is not aimed at you, but the 20 mile a year minimum always makes me laugh, we regularly will cover 30 miles in a weekend on our 16 foot cruiser. Moving less than a mile every 2 weeks can hardly be classed as bona fidi navigating, I often wonder if the 20 was a typo and is missing a "0".
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure

we did over 100 in the summer, but my point in mentionining that is more for people thinking of buying a boat so they can be realistic when going into it about if it suits their life. we do have periods of not moving as far in the winter and frankly i am glad its 20 miles as this year we will need to do work to the boat and will probably do quite a lot less miles than useual
