I have a headcanon that the Chozo called them X because they refused to give them a proper name. Names belong to things with faces and forms, but the X had neither, they merely stole those things from other beings. To the Chozo, the X may as well have been called the Nameless Blight or something else suitably Lovecraftian.

I think what's also worth noting is that the X Parasite replicated Samus more than just once and it's mentioned by Adam that there were no fewer than 10 SA-X onboard BSL. Just the idea of 2 SA-X is bad enough but 10 is just terrifying.

10:29 I actually think Dread slightly disproves that, as when an X absorbed Quiet Robe's body, it also copied his personallity as it allowed itself to be absorbed by Samus to restore her normal form. Restarting the EMMIs could debunk that theory, but a counter I have to that is that having Quiet Robe's knowledge and memories, it believed that the Metroid DNA within Samus was the only way to defeat Raven Beak and that the EMMIs would help speed up the process. Edit: As for the SA-X, it had only really absorbed her Varia Suit, and I don't think that it having a record function is too far fetched.

I’d imagine Dark Samus would either A. Attack SA-X on sight believing it to be the real Samus or B. It would attack SA-X on sight due to the potentially retained instincts from when it was Metroid Prime.

I just realized, if the Metroid were inspired by xenomorphs, the X are definitely inspired by The Thing, from copying its prey all the way down to the ambiguous name

Dark Samus would probably have naturally attacked and attempted to consume SA-X, seeing as how dark Samus is kind of a Metroid.

The most disturbing thing about the X Parasites is just how similar they are to the alien in The Thing 1982. You’d never know who’s real or not. By the time you find out, you’re pretty much done for.

So in short, it's basically a fancier version of The Thing from the 1982 horror movie. it steals DNA and imitates that life form

Quiet Robe X was a kinda weird case. He was pretty much the same as ever even though he was infected. He set the Emmis free so Samus could awaken her Metroid powers prior to fighting Raven Beak, and saved Samus when ZDR was blowing up.

Everytime You see a X infection taking place, the host gets dissolved in seconds and the X parasite takes its place almost seamingly. The scariest aspect of X is not necessarily their ability to reproduce a host perfectly with all of its abilities, it's that infection is a 100% death guaranteed and both infection and duplication takes place in literal seconds, meaning that if an X is allowed to infect a planet, it can completely wipe it out in a matter of hours. It's exactly like in "The thing" were you can never suspect where an X may come from since they blend in perfectly in any ecosystem they are put in and completely replace and mimic any life form they absorb. You could be the last human on earth at the very end of the X wiping out your planet and you, likely, would never even know it until you're the last to be consumed. I just really like the fact that Samus Aran was the only living being we know of that survived and fought a prolonged X infection and this is, no doubt, not a coincidence. Her Chozo blood was obviously hugely responsible for the fact that she was able to fight off the X for hours, maybe even days. As a result, the Universe developed its own "immunity system" in the form of Samus Aran both having been the perfect person to be patient Zero and her being Patient Zero AND surviving being the reason why Space Fed was able to organize a plan to fight it. I'm glad Samus destroyed every single of them, because even scarier than the X was the revelation that the Space Fed planned to weaponize the X.

Fusion was my gateway into the Metroid series, the first game I ever played. I remember how young me used to be terrified of the SA-X, but I kept playing and getting better until I was eventually able to do a deathless run. Sadly, the cartridge was lost, but the memories live on. And yes, I didn't realize until the ending that Samus was a woman.

I always saw the X as something like The Thing. They’ll take creatures who naturally evolved on a planet, and use their abilities to their advantage while also having the ability to change the assimilated body to their liking. In other words that can explain why Ridley-X looks so different from Ridley in Super Metroid. They took Ridley’s body (or a clone of Ridley’s body, I mean it doesn’t really matter whether it’s a clone or not) and dumbed down the head, indicating a smaller brain, and buffed his claw size, mouth size and well size in general. All just to eliminate Samus, their only threat on that station.

I hope prime 4 does something with the X parasites now that the source of phazon was (seemingly) destroyed. Samus needs a new overarcing threat and the space pirates need something new for them to attempt to weaponize. I'd like to see a plot that reveals that the X can actually feel what their hosts felt, but it normally gets overpowered very quickly by the X's primal instincts, with few "eXceptions" that manage to hold onto their identity separate from the rest of the X. These eXceptions would be seen as a threat to the entirety of the X "hivemind(?)", similarly to how the borg in Star Trek consider individuality a threat to the collective whole, and attack them. The following would be where the game would start post prologue, after reintroducing the X parasites and revealing that the metroid vaccine from metroid fusion is still in effect in prime 4. Early on, Samus would come across one of these "eXceptions" and attempt to further humanize it beyond being just an X Host that is being hunted by the other X, like how Samus didn't murder the infant metroid... So over the course of the game, you occasionally interact with this X Host that is aware it's infected, but attempts to keep itself in the form it took to prevent the X's biological imperative from taking over. Your part in all of this is genocide as usual, a contract by the GF to exterminate the X "once and for all". Since Samus is the only one immune to effects of the X, she is obviously capable. However, the existence of these eXceptions, in addition to her memories of exterminating the metroids, give samus pause when she realizes that history is repeating itself. It would even suggest that even some of the X are redeemable, putting the genocide into context and putting weight on figuring out how the eXceptions occurred. This would be where the space pirates likely make their proper appearance, using containment suits capable of resisting X infections initially, they'd be the main bad guys till the X infect most of them anyway, despite their preparations. During that time more eXceptions happen in the space pirate ranks, and these are promptly studied and weaponized into a new wave of adaptive trooper, one capable of using X shapeshifting to produce a wide array of attacks that the X have absorbed over the years, as well as being able to consume other eXceptions (live or dead) and X parasites to heal themselves. The ending for such a plot could go anywhere, but I personally like the idea that a humanoid eXception you save from the very beginning is somehow responsible for saving Samus at the end by directly helping Samus at a crucial point, and either sacrificing itself to finish off the other X, allowing itself to be reabsorbed in order to attempt to take over the whole X "collective", or otherwise stalling the X so Samus can get away (while Samus tries to find a way to save the eXception one last time, so they can escape together).

I just realized something terrifying the X could of done if slightly smarter (at least in lore a bit).. imagine the SA-X riding on the back of Neo-Ridely as Nightmare is there as "support" they.. would be nigh unstoppable

Honestly I'm half thinking the X aren't actually back in Dread, that it was a lie to trick Samus to coming to the planet, since the game is about escaping to the surface. Wouldn't surprise me if as soon as the game begins you find out the X were never on the planet and Samus gets sent down to the core
