What Are Trophic Levels? | Ecology & Environment | Biology | FuseSchool
How do we find out the position that an organism occupies in a food chain? The different feeding positions in a food chain or web are called trophic levels. All food chains and webs have at least two trophic levels, starting at level one with producers.
Producers make their own food - so plants.
Primary consumers make up the 2nd trophic level, and eat plant products. Herbivores like rabbits make up this trophic level.
Secondary consumers are the 3rd trophic level up, and so on.
At the top are tertiary consumers. These are usually carnivores, but can also be omnivores like us (humans).
All food chains have at least two or three trophic levels, but there is rarely more than 4 trophic levels because energy is lost at each stage.

Biomass of decomposers is greater than consumers...So, I suggest it should not be represented as a smaller box at the top of the trophic levels.
@alexanderpozon3479
@alexanderpozon3479 7 жыл бұрын
You're right at that, however, I think you're forgetting that there are two types of ecological pyramids. A pyramid of biomass and another, a pyramid of energy. The one depicted in the video is the latter. Where the energy from the organism on the lower step is taken up by the one above. If this is a biomass pyramid, then you would see disproportional sizes of the steps. I hope that I explained it clearly.

@@alexanderpozon3479 that is pretty well explained! I would like to know the importance of these graphs though, I'm really wondering the importance of representing biomass and why it is important to know the biomass in a given area. Also, I still think it would be important to show that detritivores can consume from all trophic levels that implies that it only gets it's energy from trophic levels 4 or 5. I know you posted this 3 years ago but if you are still around and willing to answer I would love to know!

I think that decomposers can be at any trophic level because organisms are dead at every trophic level and thus, they are decomposed by decomposers. So, decomposers can be present at every trophic level.

I have a question, if apex predators aren’t eaten by other animals, and we are mammals, (so that means we are basically animals) doesn’t that mean the shark isn’t an apex predator?
@hanainyousaff
@hanainyousaff Жыл бұрын
Yeah humans are also considered as animals and shark is at the top of pyramid in ocean because sharks can kill humans but humans also eat the shark meat.
