What are WIMS? This week, Matt and Keith discuss the potential impact of a new weight detection technology that could catch overweight motorhomes and campervans on the road. "WIMS", or Weight In Motion Sensors have been adapted from existing road analysis technology and weigh vehicles as they drive.
We're joined by the Leisure Vehicles Officer at NaVCIS, who shares insights on the laws surrounding vehicle weight limits and unpacks how WIMS work, why they're being introduced and if they're essential for maintaining safety on our roads.
In the news, Matt and Keith explore the latest trial of technology designed to catch motorists who flout seatbelt laws or use mobile phones while driving.

I always thought WIMS was a screening device. They are not accurate enough to base a prosecution on, VOSA have to take you to a calibrated weighbridge to get the evidence for a penalty/prosecution. However, yes, they could be used as a screening device for motorhomes.

I have just been to the local weigh-bridge with our “new to us” 2017 Peugeot Boxer Calders Camper conversion to get it weighed before loading up with all our goods and shackles! This was with 7/8 fuel, full gas and 40% fresh water we weighed in at 2,940kgs. We therefore now know we have a payload of 560kgs, less our dogs and our weight. Given the lack of space compared to our 7.5m Coachbuilt, then I can’t see how we have got the room for coming close to our maximum payload.

Although that sounds like you’re ok as it is under the overall plated weight but it could still exceed an individual axle weight. Always use a weighbridge that can do individual axles most overweight motor caravans exceed the rear axle weight as stated on the vehicles weight plate. End result same fine or prosecution.

I agree Kevin is great, you both bring a smile when I watch your pod casts, even though I am from the dark side coming back to caravaning after a 13 year break. Have noticed everything seems heavier But I suspect that’s an age thing as I have from yesterday officially a gimpy knee that will not get better but will need replacing eventually

Kevin is always right! As long as you're travelling how you want then it couldn't possibly be the dark side (don't tell the other motorhomers I said that though). Wishing you all the best for finding something to help your knee problems.

Thank you and welcome! I think all motor vehicles have become heavier in general. More safety equipment and driver aids mean more weight. Our 1934 Austin 7 is tiny and light compared to the modern mini!

I’ve got a residential 415w solar panel on my van not had any problems in the last 12 months and only used the mains charger three times

With the flyscreen bracket, its not just Adria, its also Eddis CV range and probably many more. Ours fell off all the time until the whole screen was replaced, now no issues.

I’m not sure it’s all Eldiss CV models tho. We’d love to work out which ones this can benefit! Some buyers say they don’t fit

@@MotorhomeMatt Our van is a CV40 Oct 2022 .. when I was in the CV Facebook group, lots of people complained about the flyscreen & the many many other faults. Terrible that Eddis do not fix repetitive faults. We were always complaining about the same issues.

@@MotorhomeMatt Adria Doors are on the R/H Side. You need to ensure you get the L/H door side for UK vans. Also the bracket does not fit all flyscreens, so try to buy from somewhere you can return it to if it don't fit. GL.

At That Leisure Shop we would accept a return and refund in full. I’ve fitted this bracket to a Twin 600SP uk side door. Most Twin models are drivers side door

I thought the mobile phone rules never applied to mums doing the school run or any delivery driver in a white van. At least that seems to be the case around here!

From April 2023 it was made illegal to use your phone whilst driving for any purpose including as a satnav, music player, or camera. So don't get one of those £5 things to stick to your window to allow you sort your satnav!

Quite right although technically a windscreen mounted holder would make phone use legal as you’re not holding it. Provided the mount does not block your view of the road. The rules are defined here and this item of kit is referenced www.gov.uk/using-mobile-phones-when-driving-the-law

The item regarding the fly screen bracket was particularly relevant so at your quoted price of £8 pound thought yes I’ll have one. Only to find on your link to the leisure shop they are listed at £22.99. Why?

You should probably point out that you can be over weight especially on the rear axle without exceeding the gvw. The wims weighs each axle to calculate the total weight.

That is correct but an overweight axle can be a problem

My point was that an overweight axle is illegal. You cannot be over the gvw without at least one axle being overweight . Using the gvw is an incorrect way of describing being overweight. It is about not overloading individual axles regardless of the gvw.

I don’t know no. But I felt a worthy topic to share as motorists driving heavier vehicles often to ferry ports where these systems are commonplace to catch overweight HGVs. Nothing stopping a motorhome being monitored

@@MotorhomeMatt I fully agree. Some people completely bury their heads in the sand regarding GVW. All very well until you’re in an accident and it’s fully investigated by Police or Insurance. Potential Prison if it’s a fatal RTA.

Talking of using a hand held mobile phone. I was once driving south on the M3 and I saw a Maroon Ferrari with Safety Car on all 4 sides and the driver happily talking quite merrily on his hand held phone and blind to all around him. Would loved to see the police stop him and his employer know how dangerous the driver was, driving a safety car..

Perhaps so but I felt better to inform and be aware. An appeal would be a hassle. Enough to prosecute? I doubt it but things could change. Live monitoring could be added to these sites meaning an on the spot weighing and checking…
