Gold and two tone watches are special. I don't really care if they're popular or not. I love being able to pick up two tone versions for less than their steel counterparts!

Steel sports in your 20s, Two Tone in your 30s and 40s, but you have to have a big boy full gold watch by 50.

1969 was a watershed year. The first pure gold Submariner was introduced. Gold was under $40 so the a full gold Submariner had about $150 worth of gold in it. Today, it is close to $9,000 just for the gold. So, a two tone watch obviously brings the cost down substantially. As someone in my teens in the 70's and working selling mainframes in the early 80's, the two tone Rolex DateJust was THE WATCH we coveted. I call it a sporty dress watch. It was the watch you could wear anywhere. It was absolutely the perfect yuppy accessory to your Ralph Loren sweater and Bass loafers. I could not afford one. So I got a Seiko two tone, that I still have. To me this is just a fashion trend coming around again. I just hope leisure suits do not make a comeback.

For me, two-tone sport watches are incredible for summer. I don’t think they look good with a suit or a more formal, winter outfit. However they are really cool when using shorts and a linen shirt, gives off that vacations vibe for me. My favorite is the two tone white dial Daytona. The other two tone watch I love is the Cartier Santos medium, but that is different as it’s not sporty - I’d wear it with a suit too, even though it wouldn’t look out of place with the summer outfits.

I’ve been slow top warm to the revival of two-tone models. But I dislike them less now than I did last year haha. Honestly, some of the new watches in two tone are beautiful. Another great video! Keep up the good work!

I think it's this middle ground/no-man's-land feeling that makes two-tone appeal to me mostly on middle ground/GADA-types of watches like the Datejust. And it also perfectly amalgamates the notions of nostalgic tools, outdated yet heartwarming technology and craftsmanship, social status and functional jewellery that come to mind when we think about mechanical luxury watches in the 21st century. So, in a way, two-tone might be the archetypal synthesis (in terms of materials used) for a luxury watch in this day and age.

On the issue of gold watches being more prone to getting scratches, I think I consider it an aesthetic advantage over steel in some kind of way. I once saw a Vacheron Constantin American historiques with alot of thin scratches. It appealed more to me than the flawless one. Having a two tone sport watch would embrace the idea of scratches to be something nice. It also reminds me of wabi Sabi.

Even though I’ve worn Rolex Steel Sports for more than 40 years, I always lusted after the TT Datejust. Last year I finally jumped in and bought a new Yellow/steel-fluted-jubilee with silver dial. This is still a Sport Watch, and will handle more than you could throw at AP, VC, and PP. I also have a Steel/white-gold version of the watch, and along with my 39mm Explorer, make a perfect 3 watch collection. I’ll get the steel 36 Explorer this year from my AD for my kid, but also think the TT version is cool too!

I had the TT DJ41 shown in thumbnail. I recently sold it and acquired a yellow gold 36mm DD. I kinda preferred the DJ41 thinking about it. The grass is always greener I guess. On the subject of gold it’s definitely an age thing. I love it now I’m getting on a bit. Never even thought about it when I was younger. It was SS all the way.

My one two tone is a Seiko 7a38 from the early '80s. It changes what was primarily a sports chronograph line into an elegant 36mm dress piece. I'll be keeping it fora long time.

Great video 😁👍 I think that two tone sports models are basically the elevated level of sports steel watches but not to flashy like a full yellow or red gold watches. I feel the same as you, a modern sport watch is not any more a practical nor a sport watch, it is more a luxury item that can work so well in severe conditions.

Short and to the point. I have two, two-tones in my modest collection. One older Breitling Chrono Cockpit and a new Super Ocean Heritage II both use the gold sparingly just on the case, the first around the bezel in the tab markers and on the dial indices and hands , the Super Ocean around the Bezel and the indices and hands. My Birthday is coming up and I am considering a much bolder two tone the Rolex GMT Root Beer. This short vid is very timely. In the end it will come down to two watches for be to pick from, both very different in style and appeal. The Root Beer or a Blancpain Ceramic Bathyscaphe one of your favorite watches JJ. They couldn't be further apart in style and presence.

I rather like the look of the SeaQ Panorama Date Two Tone. But it doesn't come on a bracelet, which means that not having a blinged up band leaves it subtle and understated. I like that. The hints of red gold are used for the bezel, crown, applied hour markers and handset which lends warmth and colour to the piece.

I really good discussion point IDGuy. Most of the two tone watches I see these days on wrists have the softer gold in the places where it is most likely to get scratched, namely the bezel, crown and inner links of the bracelet. This I guess is form or probably fashion over function. My watches are worn and rotated and all of them will get the odd lived in unintentional cosmetic modification so for now I'll stick with what I have.

It’s all in the eye of the beholder. On a personal level a watch is a tool that says something about you and your occupation or hobbies. You can’t go wrong with a quality field watch for an everyday wearer.

Great video as always! Two tone watches just don’t work for me, but to be honest I don’t like mixing metals in the first place.

I’m not usually all that keen on Rose Gold , but as part of a two-tone watch it generally looks really good. Classier and less chintzy than two-tone using yellow gold. Even though, if the whole watch is to be made of gold, I prefer yellow over rose. As the latter resembles more base metal copper than gold itself, to me anyway. But I’m also a fan of white/grey gold too.

Even a cheaper watch is a piece of jewelery so I don't buy that two tone sports watches are some sort of contradiction. Take the two tone Explorer - it's just as capable as the stainless steel one and looks better for daily use (where the stainless steel is mainly used). Two tone itself can be very hit or miss but, for those who like it, it's making a sports watch look better for daily use. If you're using a sports watch for more tool use, then get a stainless steel.

My 41mm Datejust looks great with everything. Maybe a little flashy but God it's beautiful.

Rose Gold modernizes the look. I think they’re always solid options if you have a good base collection.

Hey mate, two tones are growing on me but still undecided. I have had the steel ceramic white dial Daytona for 5 years as my only watch and now considering another (between new 36 steel explorer, two tone 36 steel/yellow gold explorer and 36 two tone jubilee fluted yellow gold steel Datejust champagne dial). I the the smaller 36 will be good as I have very small wrist and the Daytona just about works as it’s a small and flattish 40 comparing to the others. If in my shoes, which would you pick next , if any, from the range above? Thanks as, always

Coming at this from another perspective... I feel as though two tone is great for people who have other jewelry or accessories as it goes with gold and white metals well too! From a sports watch perspective, it provides that versatility with the added versatility of robustness.

In my opinion, the 36mm two-tone Datejust is THE watch.

I could not stand the look of a two tone watch in my early years..and yet now at 50 I’ve just parted with 10k on a two tone Omega.. I now teach my 2 young boys not to constantly tell me they don’t like vegetables.. they may just end up loving them when they grow up.. GREAT VIDEO..

Like alot of luxury items, they are bought for more as symbol not so much a tool. Some people them as tools but it's usually like 5 percent. Only way I can relate it is when I worked at BMW a lot of people bought an m3 as a status symbol but never really enjoyed what it can do. But there were a few guys that actually took them on the track and used them for what they were designed for. I look at the two-tone watches and see it's equivalent to like a limited edition package for a car. A little More pop for otherwise exclusive item. I love two-tone explorer now and date just. Just make it feel special than normal and that's fun.

Two tone sports watches are fine by me. Let’s face it: these watches aren’t used for heavy duty sports purposes anymore, and two tone embraces that reality, while still retaining steel as the important foundation for a daily use time piece. Two tone is the first step to the rarification of a traditional tool watch. Also, if you are value conscious, then it at least feels less painful to pay over 10 grand for a watch with precious metal that you can see and touch, rather than spending equivalent money on something only made from a budget industrial material. Unlike gold, steel hasn’t been, is not and never will be a precious metal. It’s what you do with it that counts, otherwise its intrinsic value is low.

I’ve always been torn over two tone pieces. They start looking like jewellery rather than daily wear pieces, and when I think of two tone I see ladies Datejusts at Wimbledon, Weddings or Horse racing events with formal attire. Plus gold is soft as butter and marks and swirls appear just breathing on your watch so not the best material. One final thought, as prices climb ever higher and criminals turn to watches as a way to turn a fast buck a glittering golden watch is just advertising the fact that your wrist watch could be worth thousands and I’d prefer to fly under that radar with steel pieces. The new Rolex Bluesy Sub may look stunning but it’s not for the shy and retiring wrist, that watch may as well have a neon bezel and lasers firing off the dial. Not only criminals may be attracted but the general public may not be impressed with such an ostentatious showing of wealth.

Two tone is now the new steel as far as Rolex is concerned. People who don’t want to risk getting a replica at a grey dealer have to be settle fir two tone. As fewer “steel only” watches are likely to be manufactured by Rolex, this trend will continue. People who want “tool watches” will go to other brands that aren’t as blessed by popular appeal as Rolex. This reality may be a driver of this trend and brands that aren’t Rolex should be aware that they might not be able to get away with this new way to increase profit margin.

I wear steel Rolexes and solid gold Hamilton’s from the 1950’s. Love both. Regarding today’s sport two toned watches. Thinking about buying a Rolex GT Master ll in steel and gold (Root Beer). However,after watching this video I am kind of changing my mind. They are now looking a little tacky to me. Oh, well. We’ll see.

I don’t mind wearing two tone when it’s a Rolex, but I will admit that I don’t want to wear it anywhere (same would hold for any Rolex). In another brand that doesn’t have the same popularity, I prefer steel to avoid unwanted attention and avoid damage the watch. The use of rubber straps is a good way to make soft metal watches less vulnerable to the latter.

Two tone watches have superior versatility than all gold or all steel/white gold/platinum variants, especially if you have an extensive wardrobe. Even more options if you’re willing to swap straps.

In most cases two-tone makes a good watch look cheap. One of the few watches that successfully combines silver (steel, white gold or platinum) and gold is the H Moser Endeavour Perpetual Calendar. This is probably because gold is used very sparingly and it compliments the black dial.

I think you can enjoy the beauty of gold without having to have it on a dress watch. I personally pretty much only have interest in sport watches so I would not mind one in TT or all gold.

The only Two-Tone watch i've ever liked is the original Rolex "root beer" from the 60s/70s.

I don’t know why but I don’t get two tone or gold Rolex submariner. It should be more robust in my opinion. But it’s weird that in the same time I like gold panerai (for ex. pam511), it looks more dressy if you want. But on the other hand Rolex gmt master looks very attractive in two tone or gold (root beer). I know that they are almost identical with submariner when you compare their cases, bracelets etc, but anyway submariner is real underwater tool and steel fits it much more.

I've always thought they were a product of the 80's (reminded me of my flashy Lacoste-wearing uncle and his golf buddies) and should stay there, but this video just made me reconsider, damn you :D

I have a two tone Thunderbird, I definitely think of it as jewelry. A two tone sports watch is a bit silly, since it clearly points out the innate nonsense of all "luxury-tool" watches. A similar cognitive dissonance comes up with collectors of gold plated weapons, such as decorated pistols. Sure it will work to its putative purpose, but it's not something one would choose for actual combat use.

In the years around the introduction of a gold sub and two tone sea dweller the world also got the very first daytona's, GMT masters, Explorer 2's etc. Rolex was a sports watch company with a little gold jewelry on the side to pay the bills. Today there's no new watches, just gilded versions of the watches of the 50's and 60's, today Rolex is a jewelry company that makes a few sports watches to generate traffic. The visceral reaction of some to the two tone explorer is the result of people having the reality of the new rolex slap them in the face as for rolex form is no longer following fiction.

Supply and demand, really. When there’s no demand, supply will diminish, & eventually disappear. Hence, there must be a “demand” for the two-tone (“TT”) to “survive” up to now, though the TT will never be the mainstream trend in the foreseeable future. The Blusey (or the Root-beer) is probably the most popular TT of all times.

For whatever reason I think a two-tone Datejust on jubilee bracelet, the Bluesy and Rootbeer Submariners look quite nice but every other version is 🤢🥴unappealing to me and the new two-tone Explorer is the worst of the worst 🤮 yuck!

I've always found two tone sports watches tacky to be honest. But I find a solid gold sports watch even worse. For me, a gold watch should be a dress watch, and at that point there's no real point in making it two tone anyway.

No one cares about two tone watches. It’s considered out of fashion for the below 40 crowd. Look at the Tudor BB Chrono SG....which I own...is selling for below MSRP while a cheaper SS version of the same watch sells above retail. Again....TT is where the value is but don’t expect any compliments.
