NEGOTIATING A SALARY IN A JOB INTERVIEW
#1. Make sure you say that you have researched the salary range for your job and industry in your response. You can research the salary range on the website GLASSDOOR.COM. Saying you have researched the salary tells the hiring manager you know exactly how much people are getting paid at other companies in the same job role.
#2. The second thing to say in your answer to the question, what are you salary expectations, is the salary you actually want.
I recommend that you ask for a salary slightly higher than the amount you would be comfortable working for. This means you can then come down slightly if the company isn’t prepared to pay you the first figure you put forward. For example, if you would be happy with a salary of $55,000, ask for $58,000 in your answer!
#3. The third thing to include in your answer is to say 3 things you will do in the role to give them a great return from your salary! Telling the hiring manager what you will do in return for your requested salary demonstrates that you must deliver great things in your work.

Did you train for your very regular and specific hand movements!😅 Remember some countries have a more nuanced communication and pay scales. For example Ireland has higher pay generally for similar positions in the UK especially public service jobs.

Now do I ball park the salary ranges according to the company and industry although the company pays way less than industry average because I have seen alot of companies do to Software Engineers these days the industry average is 92k-122k in chicago but they only pay 75k-85k according to JD so what would be the approach here should i ball park it in between to 88k to close in that gap?

Research thoroughly, understand your worth, and consider the entire compensation package. Suggesting a salary like $88k, closer to their upper limit but below the average, can seem reasonable with a strong justification of your value. Be ready to discuss your skills and the industry standard, but remain flexible and open to the entire offer, not just the base salary. I hope this helps!

The trickiest part is doing the research to get an idea of salary range for a particular company. Knowing the industry standard is a good starting point but not enough because there can be a huge pay gap between companies. So research as much as you can on the company if they don’t state a range in the job description 😢

Thank you, but what about where you are forced to enter a number in a box in your application prior to an interview? No words. Some say put 0 but that might get you filtered out. Even if you guess a range, you don't know the job yet and the internal pay structure. Too low, you look desperate and can be exploited. Too high, you look foolish and exclude yourself.
