When I was in receptions we had to stand the ENTIRE time, except for the auditorium and they wouldn't let me cross my damn legs or anything! That was SOOO hard for me I had been crossing my legs while sitting amazing how hard it is to break those small habbits. I lost my phone instantly also, in a matter of hours. My barracks were HORRIBLE!!! I was in the trailers in basic, and we didn't have our own cafeteria. Terrible company. I remember one kid asked to leave in receptions, and he asked the drill sergeant "Where do I go to get out of here?" and the Drill Sergeant talked him into staying and he ended up graduating!!! Crazy

I was at ft Jackson way back in 03 and i COMPLETELY forgot about the no legs crossing thing. I too took a few yellings-at to finally learn not to do so. I went in at age 29/30 so I was very ingrained in legs crossed when I sat. they do that so the legs wont go to sleep and if a soldier has to move fast to survive they wont get a leg issue. To this DAY i can not sit with my legs crossed. It feels awkward af now. What used to be so easy....... lol. Kind of like before I had my son, I always slept on my stomach. Pregnancy sure changed that (back in 94 I had him) and holy cow to this day I still cant sleep on my stomach try as i might. It's amazing how training can completely wash a habit from a person.

I don't mean to be a smart ass, but do you want some cheese with that whine. I was in Boot back in 97 and it was a completely different experience. You youngsters today have it easy compared to when I was in. Today's boot camp is a complete joke compared to back in the day, except the Marines. Marine boot still looks the same from what I remember.

I did my basic at Jackson in '67. We got to Jackson on a Friday night and did in-processing til 0330 and then were put in a tent city for 2 hours sleep. After chow we took some tests and then did a battery of shots and after chow did more tests. Then we had some training films until chow and back to the tents for the evening. Sunday we went for our uniform allotment and lined up outside with our stuffed duffel bags , we were then stuffed into some cattle trailers and driven to our basic training companies where we were shown our bunks in these old wooden barracks like you see in old movies. The DI's gave us a rundown on what not to do and gave us a few lectures on basic military comportment. We were also told we were the first men to use these barracks since the Korean war and we would be getting them back into shape every night after training. That actually was a good thing because the DI's left us alone after chow so we could scrape, paint, and polish the barracks - we saw very little of the DI's after evening chow. It's amazing how much work a platoon of men can do in a few hours every night. The fun began at 0530 Monday when they rudely awoke us to our new life as a soldier.

Wow when I went to Fort Jackson back in 2000 the facilities were very nice. The barracks were new 4 stories tall made of darker color brick. The insides were immaculate. Each company occupied a barrack building I believe each platoon in the company Echo 3/61st took a floor, ie 1st platoon 1st floor, 2nd plAtoon 2nd floor etc. There were six soldiers per room single beds and wall lockers. My biggest memory from Ft. Jackson was everyone’s body literally smoking in the mornings after PT. Anyway, my general assessment of any basic would be they all suck while your going through them but they are not so bad after you have finished.

@@theoc007 I was at FJ in 2003 but at reception, we did our paperwork, shots, etc, got uniform, pt and classes, other stuff long forgotten, then had to do a kind of pt test (pushup, situp and mile run) to make sure we qualified for bct. If we failed anything, the soldier would have to go to FTC. FTC was called 'fat camp' because it was mainly folks who couldn't do a single pushup or situp or ran the mile in like 45 minutes lol. Ranked WAY under the minimum for most. I've heard FTC is gone now and they push soldiers directly into bct.

I did BT at Ft Jackson back in 1987 (yeah I'm old, lol). My barracks were at Tank Hill, old wooden building's, with a protrain unit. What that meant was our Drill were reservists, and changed out every two weeks, except for our lead DS. That sucked, they came in for their annual 2week "summer camp" and as you got used to them they were gone and had new one coming in hard ass attitude. My favorite times were Victory Tower and the night live fire course (can't remember the range name anymore). Times have definitely changed between and now, but good soldiers are still made! Thanks for sharing your experiences, keep your 6 down & yet spirit up!

I did my Basic Training at Fort Jackson as well, back in '01. We didn't have to worry about our cell phones, because no one really had any. lol. When I first arrived at For Jackson, I literally though reception was Basic Training and thought, "man, this shit is easy as fuck." I didn't realize it until the last day of reception. The difference back then was we didn't really have any drill sergeants in reception. I think we may have had one, but that was it. There were a bunch of E3's and E4's trying to act tough and yell at everyone. Apparently they were allowed to. Looking back, I compared them to mall security in the law enforcement world. They thought they were hot shit yelling at all the new recruits. But yeah, reception was boring as shit. Nothing but sitting around and walking from one spot to the next.

I am fixing to go to Fort Jackson in the beginning of January 2019, two of my buddies just confirmed that it has everything to do with your drill SGT. If you can have your cell phone or not, and watch! Also some showers have curtains and some don’t depending on what building and floor, I just found this out today: 12-29-2018 I am no expert, as I said I just found out, However they do allow you to get water through out the day if you get dehydrated, which is a much bigger deal for me than any of the other stuff in my comment, yes I get dehydrated a lot and doing 4 mile runs+ PT definitely nice to know you can refill your water supply without having to wait till your next meal. Oh and last note: I’m a 92A-Automated-Logistics-Specialist. For Spartanburg SC! Yup I did a lot of research before joining and I attend USC-Upstate going for my Bachelors right across my Armory/Post for my job! Can’t wait.

I did my basic at Fort Knox. I can say my reception was quite different than Fort Jackson. The two differences so far is 1. We had to do 10 Army pushup in order to move onto regular basic, for those who couldn’t would go to remedial basic. 2. There was an introduction of Drill Sergeants, and this is when they did what is now called Shark Attack. And I’m sure many of us veterans are not at all happy the your SMA is taking or should I say changing the process of Shark Attack. Oh and the moment I step foot off the bus is the moment I felt like a soldier. Yes it was after 2300 hrs, but it still felt good. I tight be different for me cause I’ve been around the military all my life, to include being in JROTC in high school. Oh and I may not have done my basic at Fort Jackson, but I did do my AIT there.

In my case the DI’s were told I would be staying only a few weeks.. I had British military Intel training already..had gone on missions including killing a number of terrorists. I wasn’t a push over but knew not to challange a DI. They liked me cause I was a sniper and rather nasty. Funny though. The lead DI at night would invite me to talk with them in private about my experiences. Showed them my wounds from gunshots.. explained the main element was to build up your staying power.. if lazy.. stop! Shared reality of combat... that if you are lazy get over it now or die. Mainly I told them friends were in Vietnam.. wise up. Concentrate on core strength. Viet Nam is joy and humid. Core strength is a must or death follows. The DI wanted me to be honest.. really honest,

I was there in 1973. Hot as h-ll. We were halfway up Tank Hill in the old WWII barracks from June til August. We never even had a fan , much less air conditioning. When we arrived at the actual Basic Training Center in Cattle trucks, Our Drill Sargent opened the center doors and it was like the world just came to an end! He screamed and cussed us like we were lower than dirt from that time until we graduated. We had a company inspection and this Drill Sargent told us that if our company won, we would get a pass to go down town Columbia. We busted our a$$es and won! When it came the day for the pass, we got our pressed Kakis on with our brass shinning and our shinned dress shoes (low quarters) and were ready to go down town Columbia. Drill Sargent Oldham came in and got us in formation. He then marched us down to the parade field and made us low crawl from one end to the other and back. It was low crawling in sand and upper 90's heat! We were so pissed, but just had to take it. That was our Payday activities and our reward for busting our a$$es!! I'll never forget Ft Jackson!!

1994 Fort Jackson, no phones lol, I remember getting a cash advance, had to buy three $20 money orders, and hair cut was $2.90, you had to give 3 ones and had a guy at the end of the line with a roll of dimes giving you a dime. I remember being measured for shoes. and I cant remember the day but we had to do 13 push ups before you could leave reception, if you couldn't do them they placed you in a remedial training platoon.

You have to understand don't take things too heart, ignore the people who are bad for you, and work out on push ups whenever you can. When I was there in August 2017 we would get 2-4 hours of sleep, and there was no toilet paper. We were told to drink a lot of water and rarely allowed to use the latrine. We got 2-3 minutes to eat, we were constantly yelled at. Going to basic and getting 5-6 hours of sleep and being able to take shits and having toilet paper seemed like a luxury. Reception was way worse than basic..

Reception is awful. No sleep. On your feet all day and the NCOs didn't seem to care about us hold unders. Do what you have to do but I got stuck there for an extra 2 weeks (and had my phone taken the last week) because my ankles were swollen. Basic is a breeze.
