As I've never heard it either, I'd assume they hear it from other Aussies. It's like how everybody in the US "knows" that Floridians have pet aligators, even though we really don't. (We kill them and eat their tails.)
@Acadian.FrenchFry

I think it's their own insecure perception of themselves to keep perpetuating such a falsehood. I'm almost 50 and American and have never even heard this idiotic belief. What moron would actually believe something like this anyway. Believing Floridians all keep pet alligators is more believable and that is not even believable either. Just more probable than riding a kangaroo.

As an American, I've never believed Australians didn't have electricity or that they rode around on kangaroos, and don't know anyone who believes that. @serenajchau 9 жыл бұрын
BelieveOnceAgain I was traveling in Hawaii (I'm from LA) and I met some people from Australia who told me that they rode kangaroos around but I kinda annoyed that they tried to pull that on me... From what I understand kangaroos are super aggressive and scary. Who'd ride them?! Unless you all are crazy or something... I don't know... Oh, I find it strange how we have different meanings for crisps, chips, and fries. For me an apple crisp is a dessert, chips are deep fried thinly sliced veggies (sometimes fruits), and fries are fried potatoes. Do you guys have apple crisp?

It’s like that every where else and you dipshits seem to think it’s all the same because you can’t tell the difference.

jon doe So far this century America has: 1. Started two illegal wars which have killed one million innocent people. 2. Almost destroyed the world economy and sent most of the world into a long recession. Then did NOTHING whatsoever to prevent the same thing from happening again. 3. Held prisoners indefinitely without charge. 4. Tortured prisoners with the full permission of the President; making him a war criminal who should be in prison. 5. Been caught spying on all of it's allies. 6. Broken more international laws than ANY other nation by FAR. 7. The highest percentage of drug addicts amongst it's population. 8. Continues to be the only western nation which still executes people (and has executed innocent people). 9. Killed hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent women and children through terrorist attacks in the Middle East. ---- The list goes on and on. And on. AND. ON. So... no, sorry, it's not just like everywhere else. The United States is EASILY the worst, most 'evil', most destructive country on the face of the planet and that's why the majority of people in the world hate America and can't wait to see the end of it.

I've never heard the "Aussies ride kangaroos" stereotype before. If some Aussie tried to tell me that, I would know he was pulling my leg instantly, as would many other Americans. But, at the same time it wouldn't shock me if a healthy amount of Americans actually believed it. I think the main stereotype would be that the Outback is Australia i.e. you don't ride a kangaroo to school/work, but they do hop around in your backyard, etc. However, I'm from Texas & we deal with similar stereotypes. Most Americans who have never been to Texas before think that we all wear cowboy boots & hats and herd cattle all day. I know how different Texas, Dallas in particular, is from that nonsense, so it's very easy for me to believe that Australia is vastly different from the stereotype being attributed to you.
@WelcomeTo
@WelcomeTo 10 жыл бұрын
This is a great comment! Yeah, not sure how so many people manage to believe the kangaroo thing aha (they can be quite dangerous to even get close to), but to be fair, though, the outback makes up most of Australia (spatially), and me even living near a city I've seen kangaroos hopping around plenty of times. But yeah A LOT of Australians live in cities and live a very similar lifestyle to that of an urban American style of living.
@JoshuaFrick3
@JoshuaFrick3 10 жыл бұрын
BelieveOnceAgain Yeah, I definitely believe that. I live in Dallas, Texas, and it's very metropolitan. But, there are a handful of places were you'll be driving by & look over your shoulder & see cattle just grazing. At the same time, you might come to visit Dallas, Texas, for 3 months and never see any cattle or even anyone wearing cowboy boots or a cowboy hat. I imagine the same would be true for me if I came to visit Australia's metropolitan areas over that same time frame.

I've been to Australia several times and the parts I've seen remind me very much of my own region, SoCal. These guys are correct. We are very similar in many ways. After drinking with Aussies for a while, I fell like I'm right at home, except when you get in a car and everything is flipped around.

They started it themselves, then they called Americans stupid. We pretty much take people at face value. You lie to someone, then honestly, you come off looking worse in that story than the person you lied to. Apparently, that little tidbit escaped them. (And in my almost 50 yrs., I've never heard anyone say that, either.)

I'm American, and I've never thought/heard that Aussies ride kangaroos. My conception of Australia is rather that it's rough country, with very down-to-earth and fun-loving people, and an alarmingly high number of scary-huge bugs.

Marshmallow Moo Mate, back in my uni days, I had a lot of mates who were exchange students from America. There was one guy and one girl who thought that you'll be able to see kangaroos out in the streets, in the cities. SMH. I told them to try and visit King's Cross at night and get piss drunk. They'll find some roos out there alright.
@Shadoessa
@Shadoessa 9 жыл бұрын
***** I agree. As an American it's relatively common to see large wild animals near a city. I see foxes all the time where I'm from. Every once in a while you'll see a deer or even a mountain lion. So telling Americans Australians see kangaroos in the cities really isn't a stretch of the imagination for us.

I'm American and when I was in Australia someone told me they'd been attacked by a koala and that's how they got the scars on their arm. I immediately knew it was bullshit even though I'm aware that koalas aren't as sweet as they look. It's so absurd to complain about stupid stereotypes while happily perpetuating them.
