The biological development of the brain shows that children’s brains are much more malleable and open to change earlier on in life. This phenomenon of brain plasticity makes children able to adapt to the challenges of the environment they grow up in, and is also the concept behind the well-known expression that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". But most importantly, it also means that children’s mental well-being is much easier to place on a successful path earlier rather than later in life. Child psychiatrist Nikita Bezborodovs explores the effects of early childhood adversity and dives into the most important factor in early child psychological development to determine the child’s success and well-being in life. Ņikita is a child psychiatrist, working in the Children's Clinical University Hospital in Riga. He has served as acting director of the largest child psychiatry clinic in Latvia since 2016. He is particularly interested in the diagnosis, rehabilitation and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) etc.) in children, adolescents and adults, as well as early recognition and intervention for various mental disorders of childhood and adolescence. He not only practices child psychiatry but also teaches in the Rīga Stradiņš University Department of Psychiatry and Narcology and is a member of the board of the Latvian Psychiatric Association. Ņikita is engaged in research in the field of public mental health, is published in international journals, and is one of the co-authors of Latvia’s clinical guidelines in the field of psychiatry. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

@Trismegistus : Insinuating that an "old man" is somehow out dated comes from a personal lack of confidence and wisdom. It also demonstrates a propensity for not not living in the moment (the now). Not only that, but you could not be any more *wrong.* "The future" is _at present_ just an idea, an idea that never actually becomes a reality. Quite literally _the future_ will never actually exist in reality. That is in fact the definition of _the future._

This is so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. All parents should watch this and take note. Be mindful and put in the investment to change yourself. You are not your parents and do not have to use their parenting ways. My mother used to yell at me, spank me, put soap in my mouth and buy me things to apologize instead of spending time with me. I healed my mother wounds and use more positive parenting techniques and if I do revert back to my mothers ways I apologize not with a toy but with a conversation. Let’s all do our part in starting the ripple to spread love, peace and kindness to the next generation.

Cadence Ashlyn I’m with you. Kudos to you for breaking the chain. I’m realizing now some ways I really failed in parenting. It’s so hard to process. But when I look into my own damage I see why I did it. I’m trying to repair it now the best I can by fixing myself first and apologizing to my children. It’s a difficult process but what better reward than happy healthy children and grandchildren. I’m breaking this chain!

@sohaib bari : That sentence is the definition of _codependent._ Your unfounded biases, and propensity for lying as a weird form of bias confirmation, does nothing to make what you say true. All it does is cloud your already sorely lacking critical thinking ability even further. Seek psychological help, and you can heal these problems.

The most important thing he said was "take an interest". To be constantly curious of a child's emotions is to genuinely love them. To give them shelter, food and education is only the tip of the iceberg.

don't speak if you don't intend to be well spoken, don't make promises you can't keep, be mindful of your actions for every action creates a negative and positive reaction, never try to convince someone to make the right choices in life, for most will hang their emotions on their shoulders and make bad choices regardless

A teacher teaches. A good teacher learns. A great teacher is a student (even and especially) of their own students. A bad teacher is intolerant, so they purposefully promote the lies of unfounded biases. Therefore propagating fear, intolerance and fostering still more intolerance. Intolerance is the vicious cycle that leads to all wars. It is the cause of conditions like famine and disease that these days more often than not could easily be cured without greed to stand in the way. *Diversity is life itself.* This is just a simple fact. Without diversity, not only would humans never have come into existence, life itself would not exist.

Liked your first comment, other than the illiteracy (taught and liar). The second comment is a result of that illiteracy. Closing a child's mind through brainwashing propaganda is the main problem we face today. A child intrinsically understands the learning process. Why screw that up with lies created solely to control the masses? Just because you have been brainwashed is no excuse for you to propagate such detrimental teachings. Children already know that hurting others is wrong. They know this far better than most adults. It is their parents and other elders who teach them to be *intolerant* and to hate others who are not the same. This is what leads to greed and violence and all the other things the religious so fervently claim they are against. You can (if you so choose) find your spirit and become spiritual, and leave the lies of religion behind you. They were created to solely to divide and conquer the masses, in an effort to control us all to satiate the greed/fear of those few humans who seek power over others.

As people grow older their minds become closed, generally speaking. This is not intrinsically true though, that's just your ageism talking. Those who don't falsely believe they already know things they do not know are still able to learn new things like a child. *Look at the world through the eyes of an innocent.* That is the path of wisdom (and how to avoid the Dunning Kruger syndrome). The more you learn, the more you realize how little you know.
