Today, I'm taking a look at 5 pedals that have entered the "John Mayer Canon". While they're all mainstays on his board, these pedals are incredible additions to any rig, regardless of what music you play.

Maxon ASC10 chorus. Very CE-2 like, but it also does amazing Leslie sounds and can be found at a respectable price.

Justin, you're doing a great job! Keep up the good work! Luckily I found one for a good deal that did the work for me: drive.google.com/file/d/14Ewj_qtJ4wccLBDQHWZhk9I4zxJUmEAG/view?usp=sharing. It's pretty easy to "un-house" the pedal and send it to a powder coating place. Just make sure that you remove the screws and the spring and document how you took it apart so you can put it back together again. Also, make sure they mask the inside where the jacks and pots connect to the chassis so you don't loose your ground contacts for the PCB and circuit.

Great video and also helpful you gave a bit more extra focus on the chorus effect. No doubt it is a staple in John's tone for the "Sob Rock" and used really well in the mix. To mention SRV;s usage of it was also equally important as Mayer is a huge SRV fan but you also mentioning that Stevie used chrous for bit more of body and texture. Johnny Winter also did the same from the late '80s on and really was a "special sauce" for his tone with the Erlewine Lazer. (note: Really heard on the "Hey Where's Yoru Brother" album.

Yeah- I’ve learned lots from Mayer’s gear. Justin’s channel is kinda like watching some weird kink- I wouldn’t want people to know I watch it, but I secretly find it interesting. Also the Keely Halo delay is next level. The way it choruses the delays is other worldly and it does a similar thing to having a slight chorus effect without having to use a separate chorus pedal. It will always be on my board 🙌🏻

I don’t know how he does it these days, but a few yeas back in a written interview John Mayer mentioned that he likes to keep his guitar volume rolled back a bit and conversely drives his amp harder. That gives a nice glassiness on rhythm, and he can bring in more snarl later by gunning the guitar volume. I’ve since learned to not have my guitar maxed until I need it

Love that Johnny is keeping Guitar cool. Dont hear much new as far as tones from him though. It's a lot of old made new for a younger generation. Cool with that ! Another excellent video.Thanks for the inside look at Mayer's rig here though it did get me wondering about something. With the prevalence of Klons being used as boosts, I wonder what would happen if someone swapped it out for a normal clean boost for these applications. I'd be curious to see the results. I tried klon into ts 10 recently and it had such a smooth huge sustain with a strat it was great. Not particularly for me I prefer bluesbreaker in klon but could still appreciate it. But I was counting pedals on my board and 7 out of 13 of my effects are stuff that Mayer has used.

My overdrive strategy is Xotic RC Booster (Scott Henderson) -> MXR Timmy -> Fulltone OCD. I use the RC Booster most, primarily for tone and to boost signal a touch, alternating with the OCD as a clean boost, and rely on the Timmy for OD effect, but sometimes using the second OD on the RC Booster for solos where appropriate.

Nice job! I use an EHX Hot Tubes and a TS808 for the drive section and achieve the very same tone on my Strat, in the delay zone I have a TC Triple Delay that imho is the next best thing you can have about delays. 👍

I’ve been watching your channel for about a year now. Slowly building my pedal board up. Learned a lot and changed a lot from my cheap power supply and cables to a one spot cs12 and learning about signal chain and where delays reverbs and modulation go in the right order. Just wanted to thank you but was curious how much better it can get. Are you still roasting or reviewing rigs? I would love to get some input on it after building it after a year. I’m still not sure how some stuff works, I’ve got 5 mono pedals going into 4 stereo pedals at the end of chain and into 2 separate amps. Do I need a splitter before the stereo pedals or is this correct? It sounds ok to me. Also still not sure if I need buffers or if my boss rc10r at the end and a poly tune at the front is good enough? I do have quite a bit of cabling also..Anyways, it would be cool to send in some pics for it to get roasted/ revised.

Thanks for watching! Yes, we're going to do that rig review segment quarterly at least. You don't need a splitter before your stereo pedals, the last mono pedal will go into the mono input (usually left input) of your first stereo pedal, then the stereo path will start on the output of your first stereo pedal. Most stereo pedals are designed to be mono in or stereo in, and then stereo out without any consequence. Boss pedals have buffers in them, but they are poor - I would consider upgrading in the future to get a buffer for each output (left and right). Your tuner buffer in the Polytune (Bonafide Buffer) should be just fine.

Mason, can you explain better that idea to put hi gain pedals before less gain pedals? since in general, we're used to push the amp hi gain od with a low gain pedal in front of it...

See our signal path video and it's explained in more detail. If you're already at your highest gain pedal wise, the more pedals in front of it just saturate it more, and have less definition.

For delay, I use a Fender Mirror Image and an MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay (either or both).

Hey Mason if I wanted a gated fuzz effect, what would be the correct signal path that would take place inside a pedal like that? Gate before or after? And what if I wanted to have an octave fuzz on top of that? Would fuzz go before or after the Octaver? Thanks

Depends whether it's impedance sensitive or not. Generally fuzz goes as close to the guitar as possible, before a buffer.

Seems like he has a core effects that are always on a board, only changing the placements and builder, based on what is inspiring at the moment. I would add a Uni-Vibe, take off the JHS Supreme, add a Fuzz Face, take off the Aqua Puss, add a Caroline Kilobyte. Kilobyte just has a great analog/tape to lo-fi ability, with more options than the aqua puss. I really dig the Providence pedals, and I’d definitely switch out the CE-2 for their Anadime-4.

I think on the board it's mostly Mogami 2319 with Switchcraft 226's and G&H Right Angle Plugs. For the instrument cables, the ones in the effects loops look like Analysis Plus, not sure what the guitar cable is. When I've gone to some of the rehearsals, I've seen everything from Mogami to Pig Hog.

Mason, for those of us who don't keep up with all gear anymore, but tune into your channel, you sometimes introduce us to pedals such as the Delay 80s, which, when we research them online, we find that they are either virtually unobtainable or, if there is one available, it's at Klon-inspired prices. The only one I find today they want $1800 for, for example. I wish you either wouldn't do that, or if you do demo them you might preface the demo with a disclaimer: "I'm going to demo this pedal as a reference, but don't get your hopes up of finding one, but if you do manage to find one it's going to be so expensive that you probably won't be either willing or able to buy it"- something like that. That out of the way, re: your comment that you have a hard time choosing between the 80s and the Chrono, FWIW on my first time watching the demo, I actually thought the Chrono sounded better. The 80s sounded more effect-y, yes, but the Chrono sounded more transparent, more native to the fundamental guitar/amp sound. After realizing the Klon-like status of the 80s, though, I thought maybe I had missed something, and went back and watched again, and then I thought yes, I can tell what people value in it. But not worth $1800, to me, at least. Too bad. Before I realized what the situation was, I thought hmm. Maybe I'll get one, mainly because it looked simpler and smaller than the Chrono : ). I wish companies, once they have a good product, would CONTINUE to make that product so that average guys could avail themselves and avoid the rare-price markups even when they can afford them.

James, the intent here is to simply inform and educate to the degree I can. The intent isn't to tease or subvert recommendations that I make by choosing something out-of-reach to frustrate the viewer. My intent was to show that they were similar pedals, and Providence still makes the Chrono delay, which I say is more practical in the video because of the tap tempo and a/b option for two delay settings. I appreciate your feedback, nonetheless.

I use a Boss tu-1000 for just about everything.... they work incredibly well for just about any instrument PLUS they are so massive and just ridiculously huge that I fell in love with it.

TS into Klon is a great combination, especially with the TS style pedal first. It negates the need for a master volume boost, especially when you run the volume and gain past noon. It's loud and it cuts. That's probably a reason why he runs the Katana as a gain stage before both overdrives as well. When it comes to stacking drives, I usually stack them by how much headroom/volume they have on tap.

Can you make a video about John Mayers Aqua Puss Slapback sound because the MKI AP1 and the MK1 AP2 are complete different. The MKI, MKII, MKIII are all different designs. On the studio recording I'm not sure if John Mayer is using the Aqua Puss slapback delay or what he is using. Try to make a video about getting those Mayer slapback delays tones.

@@VertexEffectsInc yes or get all Mk1,Mk2,Mk3. I heard that SRV used the Ibanez Delay CHAMP CD10 which is Rare. If you listen to SRV studio albums there is a slapback delay which I think is with the Dimension D so the engineers added the slapback delay around the Dimension D. There is something very special about the design and IC chip used in the Ibanez Delay CHAMP to get that 50's slapback sound. I'm not sure what slapback delay SRV used in the studio but you can really hear it in the studio recordings

You may try grabbing a Supro delay since it uses a remake of the Panasonic chips used in those old AP1s. May be worth grabbing an AP2 and A-Bing the two to see if it's worth hunting down an AP1. The Supro definitely does the same lo-fi repeat thing the AP1 does and has a few more features.

@@nevershoutgraham2297 Thanks I didn't know that Supro Delay used that same Panasonic Chip that the Aqua Puss AP1 and AP2 used. That Panasonic chip has a certain sound tone you can't get with other delay pedals

What’s your opinion on the 29 pedals EUNA? I think Mayer uses one these days.

I look at it more of a tone shaper that super low output impedance than a buffer. It's very well made, unquestionably, but has a sound to it for sure that is different from neutral. When I think of a buffer, by definition, it should have no color, no EQ change - just the sound of the guitar plugged into the amp with minimal color in between. The EUNA is going for something difference, I think deliberately, to enhance the sound of the guitar. To me that's different than the intent of a buffer. Beyond that, it's only an input buffer, so it's only doing anything until it either 1) hits another buffered pedal in the signal path or 2) another pedal is turned on. You'd still need an output buffer separately from the input buffer to complete your pedalboard ideally.

@@adamlowry8687 I think in terms of the quality of the buffer, even the Truetone Pure Buffer would be fine as an output buffer, 50 ohm output impedance, or a Mesa Boogie Stowaway.

@@adamlowry8687 I have a EUNA and a Xotic Super Sweet. At unity gain the EUNA reminds me a lot of the Super Sweet, it colors the tone, but in a nice way. I think on the new rig Mayer is back to a Polytune Buffer or a Boss Buffer via the tuner, so maybe he found that to be an issue as well???

the klon is really really mid heavy. i always put my soft clipper before the klon. i use a greer lightspeed for anyone using distortion, the klon and distortion pedals do not get along.

soft clipping as in like overdrive/TS type effect. i don’t know enough about sine wave behavior to tell you if it’s symmetrical or not. i know how it sounds and feels to play. in fact, the klon may be a soft clipper but it doesn’t feel that way. it definitely puts whatever sound is before it “up front” and gives a little more. i use it for solos type thing. i know for other people it’s always on but for me it’s kinda harsh unless you have a compressor on all the time. (i know some do this too. ie isbell). i like my light speed + klon. or lightspeed + compressor but never all three. the distortion i use for my “foo fighters” type moments is a Revv G3 that only likes to be by itself. it doesn’t mind the light speed but doesn’t really add much so i keep it on by itself. so i know this was a long answer but it’s just my experience. if you care enough for my whole rig i’d be happy to reply. just volunteering my klon experience. fwiw i use a RYRA klon and not the real deal- so that may be affecting my experience as well

Want to point out that these pedals are there to affect tone going to specific amps. Some pedals sound better with some amps and not others.

Sure...but most commonly people using pedals are using somewhat pedal platform amps, when speaking on overdrives. For the mod and delay section this could really be for any amp.

I felt the same way until I got a silver sky. I have a amer std strat with house of tones 1960 s type pickups and vintage correct wiring and the silver sky tone kills it.

What can we learn from John Mayer? Being white, middle class in the First World, and more or less good-looking is like playing life on easy mode. Not to say he didn't put any effort, but at the same time, almost everything was handed on a plate to him.

he was writing and playing for years before he got big. he actually expected to be a session guitarist, but his writing and demos were so good that producers wanted to get him into the studio before they knew what he looked like just off of demos. Maybe it's because he's a really good writer and very competent musician?

According to Guiness The Weeknd is the most popular musician; Biggest seller of digital singles is Drake, neither of whom is white, american, and possibly born middle class. Being a guitar hero is not what it used to be, it is almost classical music at this point.
