We got an inside look at the intense 26-week training program that all future Mounties must endure before officially joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days at the RCMP Academy, Depot Division in Regina, Saskatchewan where he observed different troops at various stages of training. The training is focused on mastering police procedure, but cadets are also put through intense physical challenges, such as entering a gas chamber and enduring a “uniform run” with a dog handler in sub-zero temperatures. Male and female cadets train together at Depot, and even square off against each other in Police Defensive Tactics training. The future Mounties also learn about RCMP customs and traditions dating back to the 19th century, culminating with the Regimental Dinner - a ceremony that, according to the RCMP, media had not been allowed to attend before this film shoot.

I'll never forget the first Mountie who pulled me over in 1985 for speeding when I was 16 years old in Vernon, BC. He asked me to leave my car full of laughing friends and sit with him in his car while he wrote up the ticket. He treated and talked to me like he was a wise older brother.

My Grandpa was in the RCMP and was involved in one of the largest manhunts in RCMP history with his K9. He was interviewed for a book about it. Its cool to see this after hearing the stories he told about training. He said at one point he was so tired he fell asleep with his eyes open. RIP grandpa, miss you.

@@uuxxuu5002 RCMP are just trained in Regina, so there isn't much difference compared to other cities. The actual headquarters is in Ottawa, Ontario. After their training they are almost always relocated somewhere else in Canada.

I truly love how the cadets are exposed to things like tear gaz. It really makes them understand the power they can impose on others, and is sure to make them think twice before using it. Go Canada!

Most police academies (at least in the United States) do this in their curriculum, and in the military for MP related jobs. Common things trainees/ recruits have to experience before being certified and authorized to employ are: Pressure points, takedowns, tasers, pepper spray/ tear gas. Instructors make them go through it just to know what it feels like so as to deter them in the future from going 0 to 100. Officers have to endure the effects of tear gas just as much as rioters. The stuff lingers and spreads, any officers dealing with people in the area suffer just as bad too. The only difference is they've trained for it and know what to expect already so they don't panic/ lose focus.

Growing up in northern part of Canada, we had some awesome people in the RCMP. They would do a lot for the kids, and I really appreciate that growing up. It made an isolated 230 people shitty community seem not so shitty.

What may be interesting is the fact that the Canadian Coast Guard doesn't really deal with anything other then saving lives (Weather its tows or wreaks). Their other duties include Hydrocarbon (oil) response. We let other agencies deal with the others

Let's be honest, it wouldn't be a Canadian boot camp...if the training didn't take place during winter And I love how the assistant commissioner is self-aware that the Canadian police is more polite than everyone else. But he has a point, if the police are friendly to each other, then when they're out and talking to victims/suspects it would calm them down as well in order to not build even more stress on an already stressful situation.

@@steelWindAlchemistin Regina, if you’re there for any sequence of 6 months you’re more than likely getting snow. I was lucky enough to attend the graduation ceremony for my brother, and was at Depot this past year to lay my uncle to rest, who retired an Inspector after more than 25 years of service. The video was very good, and one thing they missed was the water training; it’s intense.

Yukon and Nunavut are both territories (though to the editor: this is nothing to regret about; there's much bigger problems out there). Nunavut separated from Northwest Territories to become its own territory in 1999 because of the Inuit wanting to have their own self-government, which was fueled by the Quebec sovereignty movement. While Yukon was split from Northwest Territories in 1898

Diversity shouldn't even matter when it comes to looking for a good job or serving the country. If you're a part of the lgbt community (aka being a boy kisser like that furry meme that's trending rn) (alternatively a physically or mentally handicapped person) but still have a good amount of competence enough for the job you're looking for? Good. If you're not competent enough? we wont give you that spot. A good approach is to never give them a free pass just because of their diversity/disability, that pass should always be for the people that have the skill for the job they want even if one of them kiss men and have a genetic disease or is a disabled person. Skill comes first before their looks. But i guess the workspace treats them like the other end of the 'never judge a book from its cover' quote. Praising a beautiful (or diverse in a modern context) looking guy/girl only to find out about their bad attitude

Dude, this is incredibly insightful! There are other ways to train cadets! The principle of kindness and positive motivation v.s. screaming and breaking the cadets... So many other military forces need to take notes! It is crystal clear that they are all becoming sharp, competent, highly skilled, and compassionate HUMANS. Sometimes, kindness and positivity are all people need to find their real inner strength and inner self. They are creating true leaders and people that I would trust to serve and protect me

All the jokes aside: This is actually a better police training than most countries offer their officers. Of course it's not comparable to a military boot camp, but neither is the job so I'm fine with that.

I actually think a 26 week training is a little short. Here in germany, the police training takes 24 to 45 months (It depends on which state you want to serve in)

@@DerZockerrocker Can you deliver any facts about why polce officers in germany are be badly trained? From my experience, they are very well trained and higly professional. And about practical traing: a Police Cadet in North Rhine-Westphalia has 4 practical courses doing, as you call it "police work". These alone take 36 weeks. Thats 10 weeks more than the WHOLE Police Training in Canada. I'm not saing that Candian police officers are bad. I'm just saing that, at least to me, training seems a little short.

A) Sehen wir hier tag täglich die angehenden und frischen Kommissare auf der Straße, B) war ich längere Zeit mit einer zusammen. Außerdem ist ein ehemaliger Arbeitskollege im Mittleren Dienst bei der Wasserschutz in HH und ich selbst bin ebenfalls im gehobenen Dienst, allerdings nicht als Polizist tätig. Habe aber privat mehr als genug Einblicke in (zumindest) die Landespolizei Niedersachen u. Hamburg, sowieso den gehobenen Dienst der BRD allgemein. 🇨🇦Last month I sat beside a young man on a flight to Regina, on his way to the Depot as a cadet. He is 30 years old and a former nurse. A lot of the cadets did a different job before they were accepted. The RCMP has its root in our military. Our military officer cadets wear a similar red wool tunic as dress uniform. I have a kid who graduated from our military college. Many of the traditions, training, and policy are the same.

Although I graduated a few years back now, I had the same facilitators and drill staff seen in this. A few changes to Depot since. Spending better part of 6 months at Depot and experiencing everything it had to offer, I can say its some of the best police training in the world. As the world of policing evolves at a rapid pace, the RCMP as a whole is a doing a much better job at keeping pace since years past. Its a shame to hear recruit applications are way down, to the point of having not enough to fill spots. Do those who are looking into it, its a tough process before, during and after training. But currently as a 4+ year constable with an excellent schedule, benefits for my family, some off the best time off in any job and $100K+ year salary not including edp and OT. Its all been worth it. You see a lot, experience a lot and go through a lot but I wont change it for anything. Not to mention we in the RCMP have a ton of career paths that municipal just cant match!

My dad used to go fishing in Canada back in the 1950s and early 60s. He said that the mounted police were always very friendly and make sure everybody was enjoying themselves while on vacation there. He said most of the time when they came across a Mountie it was when they were canoeing to a fishing spot and the officer was boating near them.

My uncle was Mountie for like 35 years. He told me many stories. Lots of the stories are things to be proud of. Other stories such as racism (especially toward Indienous persons), sexism and other "Mountie cultue" behavours are cringeworthy. Hopefully theses issues are being addressed so that Canada can continue to be proud of this distinctly Canadian institution!

the RCMP was originally known as the Northwest Mounted Police. formed in 1873 and disbanded in 1920 and became the RCMP. So actually they were a mounted force.

Mounties are unique as they are in every province, Canada has no version of the FBI - just officers who work on federal cases. So you get Mounties who are average county police officers, some who work on provincial cases and others on federal. This also allows great communication when a major national issue is taking place like a hunt for killers spanning many provinces. I do see some similarities with attitude and respect that the rangers hold too.

Once when Grant McEwen was the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta a university in California asked him to come down and give the commencement address. He agreed to do so. Because he represented Alberta and Canada the Alberta government thought that it would look good for him to be accompanied by two RCMP officers in ceremonial dress. He got on a jet accompanied by two Mounties. Two women saw this. One woman said"what do you think he did". The other woman said"I think that he is a bank robber". The other woman said"No, he looks more like a white collar criminal". They thought that he was an American criminal being returned to the USA by the Mounties.

As a combat veteran of the US military, I am rather impressed with the level of realistic training provided to these officers at the same time of maintaining a respectable work culture that is very hard to achieve. Many law enforcement agencies could benefit significantly from creating similar training programs. Their PM may be a tool but the Mounties appear to have their shit together, also props for the unbiased gender training.

Wow. It's an improved version of the French Gendarmerie, that combines soldiering and policing. It takes away the soldiering part of the Gendarmerie, but inputs more rigor and foot drills. It'as actually tremendously brilliant. (From a french parachute infantry sergeant point of view)

The RCMP had a semi-militarized origin, as their original purpose was to range the lands to the West and establish Canadian sovereignty over the Western territories. The military aspects of the RCMP was mostly phased out after the cold war and completely phased out after 9/11.

Yeah except the RCMP just sit there on highways and construction sites (at odd hours when nobody is working) with radar like highwaymen to give out tickets. They're the only people allowed to carry guns in Canada and if someone breaks into your house and you try to defend yourself (especially with guns) they come for YOU and treat YOU like the criminal. They're a bunch of pansy fascists dressed like red lolipops whose entire job is you keep you under control by the elites. They are definitely there to dominate.

Your life is comfortable and safe in ways you can't even imagine and that most of us envy. And that safety is due to your Police. Learn to appreciate it.

@@fewerbeansplease well they are law enforcement. Law can be right or wrong. Doesn't matter in the grand scheme. Nothing's fair. Life doesn't care if you have dreams and goals. People don't either. So don't constantly expect people to treat you like you want to be treated. Institutionalized enforcement or not.
