There's a cute trick to living in Montreal and rarely having to deal with winter. There are many apartment buildings that have direct access to the metro. If you get an apartment in one of those buildings, you can go out all day, frequenting that 'underground city', do all your shopping, eat at any number of restaurants, go to the cinema, whatever, then go back home, without ever so much as wearing a jacket. And if you happen to have a job that is similarly connected to the metro, well...

That is so intriguing. I’d like to see a video of an apartment like this.

Twenty years ago we lived in downtown Montreal and experienced the most enchanting winter morning. Overnight there was an Ice Fog which rolled in from the St. Lawrence River and as the sun rose we saw every surface covered in ice crystals. All the sidewalks, roads, lampposts, houses, cars, everything, reflecting the sunlight. It was so beautiful and very rare. Canadians have to endure the cold, but we are compensated by unsurpassed beauty.

Also quite a few buildings are painted very colorful colors. You'll see random houses with a bright red or purple or yellow roof. When it snows the colors pop in such a beautiful way. Definitely colors up all the white if the winter is too long.

You know... I live in a tropical country. I do think that it is interesting to see cities in harsh winters, with everything covered in snow .... but I just can't shake the feeling that snow just makes everything harder, from clothing to driving to simply walking. And after a few days, everything feels a little depressing and the landscape feels monotous. Of course people/cities are adapted and used to the harsh winters and all the required actions for living through them but I personally can't imagine myself living in a place like this, at least not with a feeling of unease.
@M_SC
@M_SC 4 жыл бұрын
well that's true at first. then you get used to it and forget what life is like without 0 pounds of extra clothes. after 2 months then you get frustrated again until it ends. if you do some kind of outdoor winter sport like skiing it makes winter feel 100 times lighter.
@triumphlover7455
@triumphlover7455 4 жыл бұрын
Rogerio Andrade what's funny is that I thought the same thing visiting tropical countries. It was amazing to witness the biodiversity, landscapes, culture and food. Alas, I could never live in these places permanently. High heat and humidity, my clothes constantly glued to my body in sweat was aggravating. Overpopulation, poverty and rampant pollution especially in urban areas are unnerving. I would also truly miss 4 distinct seasons. Each one is like a new chapter and makes you love and appreciate the next one. The air, smells, temperature, landscape and lifestyle in a perpetual dance. From swimming, fishing and straight up drinking from a fresh water lake to skiing down the mountain next to it a few months later is magical. Listen, a real winter isn't for everyone. Not everybody is cut out for it. You either embrace it or it'll chew you up and spit you out. Actually come to think of it, the only people that bitch every year about winter are lazy, sedentary, never invested in proper winter gear or think life outside of the city limits is an empty void. The fact is, the city can offer very little in the depths of winter. It can entertain you with the same old shit only for so long. The country is where it's at. Skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, skating, hockey, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, etc etc. Take your pick and if your lucky, at the end of that glorious day, a snow covered chalet with a fireplace, a Bailey's and a loved one under a blanket! It's either winter or Winter Wonderland, your choice. Cheers.

You are not wrong, winter does make most things harder, especially the day to day grind. However, the magic that is winter takes a little time to appreciate. The sound of a heavy snowfall. All noises are dampened, you can hear the flakes hitting each other, it gives all lights a halo. A crisp really cold day is the opposite, sound travels further, the brightness of the day is amplified by the snow, the sky is a deep blue, and ice crystals form in the air so the sky sparkles and at night you notice things, like trees cracking from the cold, or eeriest of all, a frozen lake BOOOMING. And, there is nothing like the feeling of entering somewhere warm and comforting when coming in from the cold. It isn't for everyone, but it has its own magical qualities!

I also live in le plateau even though my french is not great. There is something about this area that is so inviting. Parc la fontaine is the most beautiful park I've ever been in, and it's less than a 5 minute walk from where I live. It's big but not too big. It's just the right size for me with plenty of space filled with trees, walking and cycling paths and, of course, people enjoying the space all year round. I've never experienced a park like this in Southern Ontario where I come from. It's magical to me. I wish I'd grown up in this culture which is so unique and different from anglophone Ontario.

hah! how about that. That sculpture at 6:30 is Les Chuchoteuses, and it used to reside in Winnipeg right in front of 214 McDermot Ave..

Why do we live here? 😜😂😂😂. Every winter is the same question 🤔🤔. This is our 19 winter here in Calgary and although some times it gets pretty cold (-20’s and windchills of -30’s) and driving in the frozen roads gets pretty stressful. In our case, as immigrants, there are a lot more things we be thankful for leaving in Canada. The quality of life is very good. It has never been easy to adapt but you have to embrace it in the most positive way. And again, winter could be very frigid some times but then we get the reward with all the beautiful and enchanted sights that nature gives you 💗🇨🇦✨✨ And as always, very nice video Dan. I really enjoy your narrative in your videos. Happy New Year!!

I’ve been to Montréal in all 4 seasons as a Texan. I was cold in July though to be fair, it was rainy and 15C and I just came from sun and 37C lol.

I am not a lover of winter, but Sunday morning at about 25-30F, right after a snow has fallen, and you hear church bells/chimes can be a magical time. That $10 mealf quiche, soap and coffee is a good deal - especially if you can get a refill of coffee. Underground Monreal and the Metro are really appreciated in winter. LA Basilique Notre Dame may not be the biggest cathedral in the world but one of the most beautiful. Inside, you feel like you have arrived in heaven, and I am not even Catholic! Mont Royal, and irs ice skating on Beaver Pond, can be a great winter hike - particularly early, before the crowds arrive. Dirty snow/slush is ugly!
