The fact that both Harper and OConor crashed at the exactly same corner makes it more obvious. There was something on the road. Looked like the combination of pothole and the loose manhole cover. The GC group actually avoided it because the first two riders crashed. Fortunately the group didn’t take the curb and the corner together. It had Basque country written all over it with the lamp post so close! Helmet saved a life today! So glad that both the guys are okay!

Looks like because of Harper started to lose control from the drain cover, then the curb was too big to avoid. O'Connor, I think he crashed like most do in these cases, the over-brake when they see someone else has crashed.

He hit something in the road 0:03 with his rear wheel, then grabbed the brakes and went off his line, locked up the wheels and went down after hitting the curb--probably pretty tough to avoid crashing in those circumstances.

I mean, it's all the way on the other side of the sidewalk. If it wasn't for the uneven pavement around the manhole cover neither of them would've been anywhere near it. You can see a couple others having a little difficulty with it, too

the young guys are strong thesedays....but they can't ride bikes. Back in the days you became pro after years of peloton experience....nowadays the make champs out of Zwift data and the drop the boys in a mad bike race with 200 men ....

He hit the drain cover and lost control of bike. That's what happens when there is no suspension on road bikes..they don't have the capacity to absorb impact and maintain traction

they did, but he was pretty screwed anyway, there's a curb--I think he locked them up trying to avoid the curb... if he was super bike handler, maybe he could have bunny hopped and recovered his line, but that'd be tough to pull off at such high speed... that'd suck! I hope the guy is OK.

yeah, it seems to be a combination of the organization's lack of attention to the quality of the track and these excessively efficient disc brakes in such a light vehicle, with any bump the cyclist to press the lever hard, locking the wheels.

Makes ya wonder if the brakes work on these bikes? Do they look WTF they're going? "Safety" is always the responsibility of the organizers but there's plenty of "rider error" to go around. If they keep this up, "roadracing" is gonna end-up restricted to purpose-built circuits where f__k-ups like these won't be so costly, ala MOTOGP

rewatch the vid. The wheels look intact, both tires are still on the rim and inflated after the crash.

Frame geometry issue, partially goverend by stupid UCI rules. Too short FC, steep HTA, short WB, long stem -- resulting in road/cx bikes that handle like crap. Unrideable OTB monsters.

Disc brakes have no space on road bikes. To much stopping power and riders do it all in last blink of a second and if you have slight imperfections on road you pay the price. We shold go back and dont listen the industry

You can clearly see both tires are still mounted + no spray of sealant, they both got bumped by the manhole, can't bring yourself back under control at that speed in a corner without room
