The Korean War saw a divide between the country, and the North and South taking sides and powerful allies to help them take full control over the country. In today's educational animated cartoon we look at the Korean War and how the country was ultimately divided into two.

As a Korean I'd really like to appreciate for the sacrifices your ancestors made for freedom 🇫🇷🇺🇸🇬🇧 Belgium, Turkey, Netherland, Luxembourg, Thailand, Philippines, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Colombia, South Africa, Ethiopia and Greece! And other countries gave out supplies for innocent civilians.

@goff0103 it's called tough love. With NKs effort to corrupt SK politics and extreme poverty Syngman Yi- Junghee Park-DooHwan Jeon regime was blessing, not dictatorship. What's the point of "freedom" when your safety in question? From my understanding those people who think they suffer from their regime are simply communist or NK sympathizers. Thus enemy of SK.

around 2/3 of the US soldiers seem to be African-Americans although in Korean war they made up only around 8% of the US forces so i'm fairly sure the animators are just using some premade models that they are running out of when showing more than 2 characters at once

Might be interesting to see how the Korean War can also be seen as the "forgotten war" sense Vietnam and WW2 are the two that is universally known and the Korean war is just seen as an arbitrary conflict that occurred.

Well, in comparison with the Vietnam and WW2 wars, there was no actual conclusion to the Korean war. The only thing that occured was some fighting, and then they went back to having the 38th parallel border zone. Vietnam and ww2 both had decisive outcomes.

Yeah when Americans honor vets or talk about history the Korean war is never mentioned. Idk why. People consider it a loss when idk how? There wouldn't be a South Korea at all, so idk how helping to save the South and their freedom is considered a loss. In hindsight and knowing US could have gotten rid of communist North 70 years ago is very disappointing. But if it taught us anything, it's why US won't let Ukraine lose.

Syngman Yi introduced Korean, all Korean men AND women voting rights, to people who were enslaved 500 years under joseon empire before they were sold like cattles to serve Japan for few decades (Japan treated Koreans way better than their own Joseon empire did so I ain't even mad about it) Idea of democratic was way beyond our head. I feel Syngman Yi is awfully underrated and gets unfair critics despite of his work. He hated the idea of communism and made SK possible. Free country with free market so most of us can thrive.

Korean War began on my birthday, June 25. Wasn't born that year but still find it fascinating that a Cold War conflict began on my birthday. After the war, the North captured a US spy ship that they still have in Pyongyang called the USS Pueblo

You strangely failed to mention several very important facts: 1. After Japan's capitulation, both the US and the Soviet Union refused to recognized the Korean Provisional Government in exile headed by Kim Gu, and whose army had fought in China against the Japanese. Instead, they set up the Trustship after the 1945 Moscow Conference. The Trustship was supposed to make recommendations for celebrating elections for a United Korea. However, that never happened. 2. Instead, while Stalin set up a separate government in the north, Gen. MacArthur and the OSS used former Japanese collaborators in order to set up a separate government in the South. Those former collaborators then designated Syngman Rhee as President. 3. Syngman Rhee had his competitor for the 1948 Election for President, Kim Gu, killed in 1949. 4. Once Syngman Rhee assumed the Presidency in 1948, he became a dictator who had thousands of political dissidents killed. Several massacres are known like the Jeju Island Massacre and the Mungyeong Massacre. 5. The US returned Syngman Rhee to power in the South in 1951. Syngman Rhee stayed in power as a virtual dictator until he was overthown in 1960.

That's one of MacArthur's mistakes. He assumed the Chinese won't intervene, but Mao had already warned before, multiple times I think, but still MacArthur didn't think they would, so he went deeper into North Korea, closing to the border with China.

From what I've read, Mao wanted to intervene immediately after the landings at Inchon (but his generals argued against it until the advance into North Korea). And he had no intentions of stopping around the 38th Parallel, he wanted the US-UN forces OUT of East Asia. Period. Hence why the war dragged on so long and why the UN force under General Matthew Ridgway had to launch a massive counteroffensive to stop South Korea from being totally destroyed by the Chinese. They actually crushed the Chinese and North Koreans so badly in 1951 and onward that the North Koreans lost 1,000 square miles of territory in the 1953 armistice. The reason we didn't try again to take North Korea was fears of either all-out war with China, or worse Soviet intervention with possible nuclear war. Saving South Korea was a miraculous result in some ways, Ridgway's name should be mentioned 10x more.

The cold war was the USA’s sphere of influence vs the Soviets sphere of influence, NOT democracy vs communism.

Difference is that the USA generally allowed actual elections in many/most cases throughout their influence sphere, the Soviets never gave theirs a say, Communism was just forced on the peoples. Even South Korea by the Cold War's end was becoming an actually functional democracy. Basically a controversial-behaving superpower vs a totalitarian and tyrannical superpower (or two of them if you consider China separate from the Soviet Union's sphere).

My grandfather was stationed a few miles north of the DMZ in the later part of the War. He ran a Battalion Aide Station. Essentially, he was the one who stabilized you if you could be treated, or held your hand while you died. Medics had short life spans, very short, and as he was one of the few to keep living, he was discharged as a SSGT. He and my grandmother used to jokingly debate over breakfast how many - specifically - Chinese soldiers made up a Communist Horde. Hahaha. But there were the darker moments. He mentioned several times he was close enough to smell the garlic they cooked with...that's far too close for my comfort.

During the Korean War, 16 countries participated in the U.N. and five other countries participated in medical aid. On top of that, 40 countries, including Japan, supplied supplies to Korea, while the Vatican and Western European countries supported Korea's postwar revival. The United States is the commander of the United Nations Command, and currently the commander of the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command and the commander of the United Nations Command. Since then, Korea has participated in all the wars that the U.S. started, and it is also the country that sent the largest number of troops during the Vietnam War.

The UN air force actually was not careful at Chinese border at all and they bombarded some villages and detected cities eg Shenyang, Fushun. Of course McArthur authorized that.

Yeah they were a great help in the battle of yultong and other battles too, canada and other countries were not also mentioned which is somewhat disappointing

My grandfather served in the Korean war and Vietnam war, My Uncle fought in Vietnam and was shot in the back he ended up getting an honorable discharge.. My cousin is currently active airborne
