Are you wondering what causes iron levels to be high, hemochromatosis, or too much iron? Maybe you were told you have high iron and you don't really know what that means. there are different ways to measure iron and so we are going to talk about testing as well as hemochromatosis, iron testing and optimal iron levels. If you're curious about the causes of high iron and some of the things you should be thinking about when this comes up in your health scenario keep watching we are gonna get into the details okay so what causes iron levels to be high so first let's define a little bit what we mean by iron levels to begin with because there's a few different ways that people talk about iron and iron levels so one way we can measure iron is through serum iron so this is just kind of what's floating around in your blood and then and it's more free and ready to be used then there's also this other form called stored iron called ferritin and that's more as it sounds a storage form of iron and then there's a there's another way that's kind of more of a surrogate marker for iron it's not actually iron but it contains iron in that's hemoglobin so hemoglobin is a molecule that helps your body transport oxygen and in order to make hemoglobin you need iron so iron is a core part of that and so often times when they say iron and hemoglobin they're used interchangeably but for this for this video we are gonna exclude hemoglobin as part of the the idea of what we are talking about as high iron so we are talking about high serum iron and high ferritin now and specifically we are gonna look more so at the ferritin and it's important to know too that there's different levels that are normal for iron levels for males and females and for ferritin for females the range goes from about eleven to two hundred or 230 and for males it goes from about 25 to 500 now that's a big range and so when we talk about high iron levels there's two ways to think about this and the two ways thing about it is like extremely high iron like above the normal range and then there's oh optimal ranges so for the purpose of this we are going to be talking about both of those and if you have a ferritin level on your female above 200 I would say that's pretty high and you there are a few things you should be thinking about for that and they're not too much different for the males so for a male if they have a ferritin that's above 500 there are a few things you should be thinking about so one of those things is called hemochromatosis so hemochromatosis is an abnormal absorption of iron through the digestive tract and when you when that happens you tend to accumulate more iron for females this probably is not going to happen if you're having normal menstrual cycles but it still can it's just more common when you go after you go through the menopause for this to to creep up for males it can happen it can show up in in your mid till to later years because it does take a while for it to build up so anything over 500 is considered somewhat problematic usually when you have hemochromatosis you have extremely high numbers but sometimes it won't show up right away so it really depends on several different things like your specific genetics so there's several different gene alterations that will cause this iron to absorb if you're doing any kind of blood donations that will mitigate the risk for both males and females and your diet is gonna play a big role too so there's a iron to only in certain things main source of iron that we get is called heme iron and that's coming from the hemoglobin our blood of animals so if you're eating animal products you're getting some iron if you're not then you know you're getting a little bit but depending on how well how well you absorb it you probably won't get high iron if you're not consuming animal products okay so just to summarize we talked about two main reasons that people can get high iron one is through dietary consumption of high iron containing foods but usually you have to have some genetics in favor of absorbing iron like this hemochromatosis gene alterations that can do that so you don't have to have um a diagnosis of hemochromatosis to have a tendency towards that and you know the genetics around that oh maybe we'll save for another video if people are interested in this but when you go see a hematologist of blood specialist because you have super high iron levels it's usually depending on how high it is. this is what causes iron levels to be high.functional medicine practitioner

My ferritin is 490 and in the new normal range, the upper limit used to be 250. I find it very disturbing that in 2022 our public health services doubled the upper normal range from 250 to 500. Ferritin is a non specific marker of inflammation. Some practitioners share that high serum ferritin means that iron is leaking from the cell or the cell is exploding…….. hmmm what in recent times would cause such a high increase in inflammation that the upper normal range of ferritin would have to be doubled for people to be considered normal???? Hmmm hopefully someone is smart enough to figure this out??

45y Asian F, iron 190, TIBC 250, TSAT 76%, ferritin 64, Hgb 11.8. Normal B6, B9, B12, neg HFE. Symptoms mainly fatigue, join pain, memory/concentration issues, started after 4 years of IUD use/amenorrhea. Took out IUD 2mo ago, no other hormone therapy or OCP, on Arimidex. Is it iron deficiency or iron overload? Does high TSAT in this case increases risk of free unbound iron in blood? Thank you for your insight!
@swintegrative
@swintegrative 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like a little bit of both... high iron absorption but not at the point of frank overload yet as your ferritin is still low normal. Keep in mind there are a lot of variables outside of these number that can play a role especially inflammation and overall iron intake. The answer to the second question (which is a good one) is yes it does.

Hello! Thank you for your video!! I have the genetic piece of hemochromatosis. All my iron levels have been suggestive of hemochromatosis my whole adult life. Except my ferritin, always in normal range, being between 50-70. My transferrin saturation percent is currently at 77% with a ferritin of only 20 after two phlebotomies my doc ordered. My dad c wants me to do more phlebotomies until I’m anemic to get my saturation to 45%. This does not seem like current recommendations or a good idea!! My question is this-is it critical to have my saturation number in normal range? Is it causing my body harm by being high with a normal ferritin? She believes so but I’ve read otherwise! Do I treat or not! Thank you and I’m a 49 yr old female!
@swintegrative
@swintegrative Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if this is your dad or doctor but I think you should listen to your doctor and or see a hematologist for specific advise on this. As saturation goes up unbound iron goes up and that can damage your tissues. Females usually will have low ferritin until mensuration stops.

Hi I would like your input. I was recently diagnosed with anemic. 3 weeks ago my ferritin was a 5 and iron level was 25. So I was prescribed ferrous sulfate 325mg which I’m taking and also 2 heme iron supplements and eating high iron foods and smoothies and was taking 2 tablespoons of black molasses every day. Went back and got my lab work done again and in 3 weeks my ferritin went from 5 to 30 and iron 25 to 306. I went way over on my iron. I also took my iron pill hours before my blood drawn and had eaten an egg and banana. I was told by a friend I shouldn’t have eaten nor took my iron pill before getting blood drawn. Hemoglobin was 10.7. Do you think all of this could contribute to my recent high iron? Doctor is sending me to a specialist.

What causes ferritin to increase around 30 points every month? My ferritin levels this March 321, May 371, June 403. I am not taking any iron-based food. No meat, red meat etc, no milk. My haemoglobin levels are always on the low end of normal. I have been walking a lot like 120 km per month and also doing intermittent fasting around 17 hrs a day which caused me to reduce body weight is this due to that? How can I know this increasing ferritin due to excess iron absorption from diet or from inflammation?

@statictech7

I assume you mean Ferritin. Have her do regular blood donations. Its the only way to lower serum iron. She would benefit from “double red” donations. Hope you see this.

I was diagnosed w lymes and my ferritin is 212. Could lymes cause it to be high?

Yes for sure. It is the inflammation from Lymes that would do that.

Hi, recently went to give🩸donation and tested at 19, anything higher than 20 I can’t donate. I’m on TRT and giving blood 🩸 makes me feel great, is TRT the reason iron is so high? Should I wait 3-4 days after TRT injection to give? I had an injection 1 day bf giving🩸. Thanks in advance

First thing is that hemoglobin is not iron only a proxy for it. TRY does raise RBC and therefor hemoglobin. Check out my video on TRT and hematocrit.

I see. It would be best to have an evaluation with a hematologist, if you have access. Transferrin saturation is a good place to start, there are also genetic test, be sure to consult with your doctor.

When you take a ferritin test the "normal range" is from 25 to 330. (Or as low as 240 even) Where is the 500 range in official testing ranges? Where is that listed anywhere officially? Not being a jerk. I need to know. It's impossible to keep track of normal blood ranges when they constantly change it to meet their goals of snuffing us out. 500 is dangerously high IMO.

The normal reference ranges are different for males and females, with males being much higher. They also differ by lab.

Hey I have high ferritin level and low hemoglobin level, I don’t know what to do, my doctor seems to brush me off and says it’s normal I feel really fatigue, sleeping all the time, feeling cold at times, hard time concentrating, breathing issues, can’t seem to have a proper work out as my breathing issue starts, also have diarrhea at times. My ferrtini level is 349 (normal is 22-275) My MCH is 27.1 (normal is 27.5-33.0)

You will need to see a doctor to get the full evaluation/analysis. Sometimes people can have low hemoglobin due to inflammation.

Hi Doc....found out my ferritin level was a bit high about a year ago (520), redid the test in May and still elevated (550)....I'm doing some tests to determine the cause....Can this condition cause Memory fog?....Can it affect my fertility level?..... Can this be caused by some type of cancer?..I'm quite healthy, no sickness that I know of....Age 51

It might cause brain fog...it is pro-inflammatory to have that much iron but sometimes the cause is inflammation too. Usually just too much red meat intake.
