@@firstnamesurname5376 Get a layman on there and I guarantee many more mistakes. Referees have to make 100s of decisions a game, and most within seconds. Officiating mistakes are a fact of and consequence of the nature of the game in its fluidity and subjectivity, not a lack of expertise or professionalism. If you think you can do it, sign up to ref a Sunday league match and get someone to video it, youll realise its not as easy as you think it is in the moment when youre watching your team play.

@@firstnamesurname5376 1- OF COURSE they make mistakes. The game was never perfect and VAR won't make it perfect but we'll get A LOT closer to where we want to be. 2- they DO explain their errors, just not to you. There are thousands of people involved but the fans are not professional referees or experts in any way so it's easy to assume and put airquotes around 'experts' and criticize referees. They ARE the experts. And I'm sure 95 percent of fans have never tried to read one page from the Laws of the Game so we should stop pretending we know all the answers.

Was great at the Euro's, just shows it's our implementation of VAR that is the issue rather than VAR itself. Biggest issue for me is that the game is slowed down so much because 'fouls' are now given for any kind of contact when reviewed by VAR, need to let the game flow more and only use VAR if there is a serious mistake being made.
@M-E_123
@M-E_123 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly - 2-3 different angles of an incident shown to the VAR reviewer once each & a freeze frame for offsides with no lines being drawn on the pitch - if that's not enough for you to say a decision is wrong the original decision should stand. Stop trying to second guess 50/50 calls because the VAR guy has seen it 20 times zoomed in at half speed from 6 different camera angles & prioritise keeping the game flowing & just cover for any clangers. Basically stick to the promise that was made when VAR was first introduced & use it to correct "clear & obvious errors" only.

@@M-E_123 Yeah 100%. Anything looks like a foul if you slow it down and replay it 20 times. Would be interesting to hear their takes on applying context of a situation when giving a red card. Like the Soucek against Fulham that was rightly overturned because Soucek was lifting his arm up to put it over Mitrovic but caught him in the face. Red given because refs are told that hand to face contact is immediate red, without thinking of context of the incident. Similarly how would they defend the Luiz red against Wolves? Luiz got the red because he didn’t make attempt to the play the ball, but he also didn’t not make an attempt, he was just running back chasing the attacker, the forward drew his leg back to take a shot and clipped Luiz’s knee. Never understand how that wasn’t overturned. The only way to prevent that very rare situation from happening is to ban defenders from getting a certain distance from an attacking player, which obviously can’t be done.

That Luiz one is the perfect example of 'letter of the law' being applied with no common sense. The rules were written with understanding the person applying them has an understanding of football. I disagree with the Luiz's knee thing, Luiz made the choice to try and get cross the opponent player to put himself between the goal and said opponent. On the same line if it's the attacker purposfully running into the path of his opponent and ends up falling over it shouldn't be considered a foul by the defender but an obstruction by the attacker.
@TheJamie229
@TheJamie229 2 жыл бұрын
@@king_mamoo Exactly the ref went "he's made contact with the attacker and made no attempt to play the ball, therefore straight red" as is the letter of the law, but that law is meant for when a defender charges across and goes through the attacker or body-checks him, not for when the attacker goes to have a shot and catches the defender running behind him in the leg.

@@king_mamoo Even in retrospect it's impossible to agree on a decision. Referees and other experts can't even agree on whether Luiz and Bednareks reds are even penalties in the first place. I think people are ignoring the fact that refs are human beings. Imagine trying to make an unbiased decision in a stadium where you've got around 50,000 people yelling at you and on top of that there are 22 players surrounding you and making life harder for you.

All good if the linesman actually calls it but I reckon if they get a decision wrong like give a offside when they ain’t book them then if they do it again send them off I think it’s brilliant and it’s up to you if they have a back up or no linesman
@AdamFlook
@AdamFlook 2 жыл бұрын
"Somebody's toe's offside, how's the assistant referee missed that?!" said nobody, ever. All this talk of slightly thicker lines, why don't they just use a much thicker line to benefit to the attacker. Yes, there will be still be fine margins but it will make fans and players less irritated because the offside player will already have been given some leeway. Hopefully, it will be better this season, but we'll see.
@BigDoniel
@BigDoniel 2 жыл бұрын
The thicker line elimates any need to give an advantage to anyone. If the line can compense for the frame-rate of the monitor, then you have the worst case scenario every time. If the attacker is on the line it's offside. Other countries have used it with no issue, it's simple, it works and it means noone gains an advantage.

Biggest issue is the time it takes for VAR decisions - especially with deciding whether goals stand or not. They need to stick to "clear & obvious errors" being all VAR is used to correct - whether offside, penalties, handballs or whatever. Give a time limit for decisions to be reviewed & if you can't see it's wrong within that limit, or if you need to be drawing lines on the pitch to help you decide the original decision of the officials needs to stand. 2-3 different angles shown to the VAR reviewer once each & 1 frozen picture for offsides and that's it - should take less than a minute per review & the game doesn't even need to stop half the time. Keeping the game moving and catching the obvious errors only should be the priority - if it's a 50/50 call don't second guess the referee because you've seen it 20 times zoomed in at half speed, let the ref call the game and jyst cover for any clangers.
@hermityt1663
@hermityt1663 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, if you can't see a clear and obvious error after looking at two angles, then obviously it wasn't a clear and obvious error. It's so simple, but for some reason, our refs find ways to make it complicated.

People like high goal games. If they are giving players offside for toenails then it gives the benefit to the defender and fewer goals are scored. Make it so players are offside where the head is.

Offsides: ball is in play until COMPLETELY over the line, apply the same concept to players and offsides. Offensive player should be “onside” when in the attacking end unless completely past a penultimate defender when the ball is released. Gap or no gap, that simple.
@armiter87
@armiter87 2 жыл бұрын
We should base offside solely on where player's feet are, judging an armpit to be offside is a bit mad, and in tight calls the rule should state there must be a clear GAP between the defender and attacker's feet. So if the attacker's heel is still behind the defender's toe it should be onside.

I’ve always been of the opinion that refs should have body cams and microphones so that we could hear and see their point of view, much like in rugby. Still nice to see them come out and tell us about the rules. Hopefully it all works out well for everyone involved. Will give attacking sides like Brentford a lot more opportunities which is good to see.
