What type of character do you find yourself falling for over and over again? The ones filled with trauma, the comical villains, the motherly caretakers? Characters with powers that are connected to emotions. Just seeing a character lose absolute control over themselves cause they saw someone they love get hurt scratches the right part in my brain

for me, it tends to be either women who get sidelined or straight up killed to make men sad (it is FASCINATING to me to think of what the lady was actually like outside of her role in the story) or edgy rival characters (think shadow the hedgehog types.)

i totally get you on the sidelined women part and it's doubly applicable for me if there's like, an obvious route they could've taken to flesh them out!! i think it's interesting that, at least from what ive noticed, edgy rivals also seem the most likely to have an associated fridged woman/girl/etc. when they're in larger casts dominated mostly by male characters. personally, it kind of leaves me at odds with them sometimes 😔 but I still like that character archetype a lot

I have a HUGE soft spot for scary monsters who look like they could tear you to shreds but are actually big sweethearts and would rather give you a hug instead. This is one of my personal favourite character types ^^

Karlack. She looks metal AF (she might be literally), but she's unable to hug anyone and she's lonely. She's a female version of a himbo, called a herbo. She's strong and muscular af, but she keeps her teddy bear Clive with her in camp, eventhough she can't cuddle or sleep with him 😢

Snarky British men, women who kick ass with swords, characters who are eccentric to the point of being a little-or a lot-unhinged, characters who are trying to be villains but suck at it, characters who mess up because they really couldn’t have known better and work to fix their mistakes, characters who act grumpy but really do care, cheerful little rays of sunshine, those awkward kids who prefer books over socializing… my tastes are pretty broad.

Mine is "Silent protagonist who actually has a decently developed personality but said personality doesn't outright appear in the game and the only time their personality is shown is either by small tidbits in the game itself or something outside of the game" I always kin those mfs, my main examples are Kris Dreemurr from Deltarune and Gordon Freeman from Half-Life. Most of the time they seem to be silly little guys but they also have some deep trauma because the events of the game give them said trauma.

Non-human anthropologists and/or characters who have a crisis about whether or not they're human. Pretty different kinds of characters, but the thing that ties them together is that they make me think about humanity as a concept and I love that.

i have a non-human (or is he human?? see even i'm questioning it) oc who is pretty much a walking philosophical dilemma, i love him so much (he is basically a part of the magic woven through the entire universe broken off that was born into a human body, he doesn't really experience emotions in the same way as humans and his mere existence in that form is actively killing people by disrupting the magic, the only way that can be resolved is by him dying but it's still wrong to kill an innocent teen who didn't do anything wrong other than being born... his whole arc is having a human girlfriend who is super emotionally sensitive, as well as a lot of friends like that, and while he doesn't feel the same things (for example fear of death) he tries his best to understand and be supportive, it's so cute... sorry for the ramble i just adore my characters

@@paradoxtatorstudios9681 Make them go through Traumatic events like death of a loved one or a near death experience, but then make them react differently than natural, like they enjoy watching the people they love suffer, or unaliving themselves is an exciting idea Then make them realize how messed up they actually are, make them break apart from inside, and make them accept the fact that they are infact not a normal human being The rest after acceptance is in your hands, do they unalive themselves/let themselves go? Do they embrace their true identity and become what they feared they were? Do they actually never accept who they are and for the rest of the story, they'll have existential crisis 24/7?

I really like characters that aren't part of the main cast but are reocurring and always have their own agenda which they show up to fulfill, sometimes that helps the cast, sometimes it's detrimental, other times it's neither and they just run into each other. it makes it feel as if there are people going on in their own adventure besides the protagonists.

"Ordinary people" or "average people" who actually turn out to be evil or a large threat. Basically, they are the type of character you'd never expect or even think would be the villain, which is what makes it more interesting for me. I also like characters who at first don't seem important to the plot or are seen as comedic relief, before actually turning out to be one of the most important characters in the story, affecting the plot in an interesting way.

I really specifically like non-human, middle aged, autistic coded, arguably kinda insane characters with a dead spouse. (there's a whole two of them who fit all of those descriptors!) Less specifically, I like characters who really need therapy but use a "f*ck it, we ball" attitude as a replacement in general.

I love characters who are abundantly stupid, but genuinely cares for other people, and would try help them if they are at their worst. Also not really a character per say, more of a scenario, but I love it when the overwhelmingly heroic characters get into morally grey situations, just the interactions that could come from that with other characters are interesting to me.

I call this the "Sympathetic Mad Scientist" -- they fall into the mad scientist archetype, but their depiction is intended to be celebratory -- or at least cool -- instead of cautionary. They don't have to be good, but they have to be someone we're expected to root for. Entrapta from SPOP, Viktor from Arcane/League of Legends, the Medic from Team Fortress 2, Dr. Stein from Soul Eater, etc.

The badass normal. The guy who doesn't have the super special powers that everyone else has, but can hold his own among them anyway. Like, sure, being able to throw fireballs around is cool and all, but you know what's even cooler? Looking the BBEG in the eye and knowing you don't even NEED fireballs to take him down. That, and characters who are just...pleasant. Not like overly affectionate or anything, just...just pleasant. And dragons, because obviously.

For me I am a big fan of Chaotic Gremlins. Like crack fic energy. Bonus point if they are short. Overall just love the crazy character. (Twice, Toga, Mei from MHA, Gaara from Naruto, Junko from Danganronpa, and Deadpool to list a few)

Cant't explain why but i've always loved robot heroes in stories (and robots in general.) characters like megaman, astroboy, bmo, canti and XJ9 have a special place in my heart

Personal favorite of mine: the unreliable narrator. Specifically, I like the ones who come up with intricate and complex lies and paint themselves as the good guys, and we just believe them without a second thought because "they're the protagonist so they have to be telling the truth." I love those so much and I've always had trouble finding good examples of them in literature, film, television, or other media.

Although it's a game you should try it: spec ops the line Spoilers about the story if you don't want to buy it/play it: Captain walker is nearly an exact copy of what you want, he's a typical war hero, like Rambo, but when you play the game further, you realize that it's what he believes that he is a comical war hero, and wants that to be the reality instead of his dream So he goes as far as killing Dubai refugees to tell himself, and the player, that "look, I'm killing bad guys, and I mean a lot of bad guys, but hey, they attacked us first right?", and the game also just shows walker's perspective, meaning you only see him as a hero, And the refugees are enemies who have to be killed in order to save Dubai One thing that amazes me is the fact that the more Violent and unheroic walker becomes, going from killing armed civilians who are fighting for their lives, to mindless friendly fire, the harder he tries to justify his actions, saying he did all this because his hands were tied, and that it's the enemy's fault. But when you're reaching the end of the game, he just stops justifying his actions, and just tries to kill the bad guys with no remorse, saying he's not going to make it out alive anyway But in the end, you still feel like a hero, because walker made you think like that. But when you finish the game, it reveals what walker actually is, the Friendly soldiers who walker was killing weren't traitors, they were trying to kill walker because he was killing the civilians those soldiers were trying to save

There's a few character types I like: 1. The comic relief, bonus points if there's more to their character than comic relief 2. Absolute balls of sunshine 3. Quiet types, not necessarily brooding but have some intrigue to them 4. women who can beat me to death

Mine *has* to be those characters who, at first, come off as goofy/flirty/playful, but later you find out they actually have a whole lot of insecurities and think too low of themselves, thinking they don’t deserve good things or that thye aren't as special as everyone else they know And their color theme is blue Three of my favorites among these have also died and came back to life

The happy and optimistic character in the middle of a bunch of serious and sometimes "edgy" characters that is not just a comic relief, but an example to the group to never lose hope and know that they can smile even in the worst of situations.

My favorite type is super sweet and sunny with a bit childishness on the outside but surprisingly cold and sharp on the inside yet still with a good heart, I just love the contrast, bonus points if they have tragic past stories. All my fav characters are that type I’m hopeless

4 words: *Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass* Characters that in one way or another are unassuming, only to be revealed as an impressive threat. Goofballs who turn out to be incredibly knowledgeable, super-powerful cutiepies, twist villains, etc. Works for non-physical strength too: timid characters who uncover a strength of will, or morally complicated characters who find their conscience and choose good have a one-way ticket straight to my heart. Oh, also comedic characters. If you can make me laugh, you can get away with so much. Edit: Also, ROBOTS! I LOVE ROBOTS! From completely sentient metal beings like Transformers to hyper intelligent AI grappling with their identities to silly little bots who haven't a care in the world beyond the chore they were made to do, I LOVE ROBOTS RAAAHHHHH

Mine are the ones that are weird and always were weird, often being isolated from a young age and causing them to grow crazy from the solitude

My love too: 1. Regretful guy in his journey to improve and do right. 2. Antagonists who don’t happen to be villains/evil and could be as relatable as the main. This is not a type of character but I feel so attracted to the stories where the antagonic forces actually manage to teach something to the main character and he reshapes his view of things from it (not necessarily turning evil).

After writing a lengthy fanfic about Megatron having a son, unexpectedly realizing I love Bege from One Piece, and getting upset that Nintendo retconned the Koopalings from being Bowser's canonical kids, I've come to realize the character type I love is the badass villain dad who still loves his kid(s) and would destroy anything that threatened to hurt them.

Young charactere, there's just something about a group of characters with a little kiddo that must be protected (or hurt for angst's sake) that tugs my heart strings. They don’t even need to be that much younger than the other characters. Just act younger or are seen as the kid of the group. Think Tails (STH) or Mikey (TMNT)

My favorite was almost said like multiple times, but I just have to put it here. The stupidest and goofiest villains who you just *know* have the most tragic backstory that makes you want to wrap them in a cozy blanket and pat them on the head saying "you're doing a great job sweetie." You get sadness and happiness, with the added charm and sass that comes with villainy. I especially love it when they become more chill with other characters as the story progresses, but don't loose the villain aspect. Since its so specific (particularly when I'm just indirectly describing one of my blorbos) I've only found a handful of characters that fit, but they own my heart. If anyone knows more that fit this, please share!

*CHOMP* I like that type of character too, and I actually have an OC with that personality, but the character's personality shouldn't revolve around "angry shorty", instead an angry shorty with a sophisticated and compelling backstory. Like they're angry because of some kind of a trauma, not because of the funny stereotype

One of my favorite oc’s is one that has a level of meta-awareness that he’s fictional but I’ve pretty much completely dropped and discontinued his story so I imagine he’s rather upset with me personally for abandoning him. He always lingers in my mind, plotting and scheming to one day find a way to be relevant again.

Failure characters. It’s quite versatile given the many ways you can interpret them. The thing that links them together is that they will eventually step up their game to try to do something better. They just feel more real because they remind us of our flaws, which make you want to root for them all the more. They may not always be on the right side of an issue, but at the end of the day, every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.

Heavy-hitter powerhouses. Kinda a generalized thing, they take pride in their strength and know what they can do. Characters who don't care about social graces but are so competent at what they do that others are forced to tolerate them. Think Dr. House or Sterling from _Leverage._ Manipulators. Characters that can sneak into others' heads and nudge them in a direction that serves them. The type that can only be truly disarmed by taking away their ability to speak.

I love inhuman characters, there’s a lot of ways to use them that I just die for. There’s the simple lovable tiny creatures that are basically marketable plushies come to life like Sprig Plantar, or little chaotic gremlin creatures like any stereotypical goblin. I also really love inhuman characters that subvert the expectations their inhumanity brings, especially when it’s a creature that’s typically seen as evil but this one is actually a totally pure cinnamon roll or otherwise clearly has a heart of gold that may or may not be buried under the surface; you can tell that despite not being human they’re not much different than us, basically every undertale character.

For me, it's "washed up forty something and their adopted, feral magical children who they would die for" Or: a deconstruction of a mary sue/bad fanfiction character. To explain what I mean, think of a character (who isn't the main one) who acts like the oblivious kid who thinks their fanfiction is real, or the y/n type you would expect from those old wattpad/creepypasta oc stories. Their lack of self awareness causes them to get in the way, which eventually hits them with a harsh reality check and forces them to realize that this isn't a fanfiction, and they are in very real danger. Not something I've seen done (definitely very niche), but I think it could be a funny idea.

Sweet, quirky goofballs who are also a super rad monster of some kind and could easily destroy you, and the kind, patient and (comparatively) rational person holding them back from commiting every crime possible. And they both love each other very much.

My favorite character is the leaders like a goofball but are quickly revealed to be eldritch horrors when opposed hence the reason they are the leader. Like making puns, childish, doesn't take things seriously then someone questions their position and then they start bleeding from the eyes. Makes my brain happy

I didn’t notice until recently, but I apparently love characters who are walking red flags. There’s just something so much more interesting about their personalities that you don’t get from characters that wouldn’t be a nightmare to date or know in general. I also really like the ones that sacrifice their own happiness to make others happy, which could also be a red flag in its own right. Bonus points if they have blonde/light colored hair. There’s only been a handful of times where my favorite character *hasn’t* had a light hair color and whenever I see a character with really light colored hair, I fixate hard. Funnily enough, my favorite character of all time has dark brown hair. He’s still a red flag that would frequent some incel forums though.

For whatever reason, ever since I was little I’ve been drawn to the villain sidekicks/friends who are always trying to talk villains out of their schemes, but remain friends with the villains. My favorite example of this is Dolokhov from the musical Great Comet, although, you could argue that he’s a little MORE than friends with Anatole.

My absolute favourite like character role at least is like the mysterious alchemy type shopkeep or mercenary who is neither allied with or against the protagonists, who will occasionally help either side, if they give a price. Just that cool, mysterious vibe alongside just the great life it must be to have a small shop with herbs and trinkets balanced on shelves or hanging from the ceiling selling potions. I love me a good deuteragonist

Less of a character type and more of a genre archetype, but…human characters who are the opposite of “humanity is cruel and nobody is truly good”. I really like stories about the inherent positive potential of humanity (hopepunk/noblebright…whatever you want to call it), but I do like finding these characters in other media too.

wise old cat side characters who are so chill they barely fit with the rest of the cast (bonus points if they're gay) examples: Seam (Deltarune) and Husker (Hazbin Hotel) also the villain that's so fun and whimsical that you could mistake them for being an innocent comic relief-- if not for their insane amounts of power that they could use to destroy the world if they cared enough to do so examples: Discord (MLP) Alastor (Hazbin Hotel) and I guess to a lesser extent Bill Cipher (Gravity Falls)

Quiet badass women can be awesome characters, but can also be easily ruined if they exist for the sole purpose to say "look at this woman easily beating this man, SEE? a woman won against a man, that's literally her personality" Same with gothic, if their personality revolves around being gothic, gosh that's so badly written Like you can make a quiet badass character, that secretly cares about the MC, and my brother in Christ, she cares about the MC like a sister or a mother, no need to make any deep opposite gender relationship romantic

Complex but legitimately happy and optimistic characters. Sure, they can go through struggles, they're allowed to feel things other than happy when the situation calls for it, but they always try their best to see things positively. Think Aang from Avatar or Martlet from Undertale Yellow.

I really love a Bilbo Baggins/Arthur Dent type character where they’re completely normal people forced into an epic, genre-y, trope-filled adventure and they’re completely overwhelmed, terrified and have no clue what to do with themselves. It can be really funny, but also allows to a lot of great character development, and gets you to look at these traditional stories through a whole new light. Also I hate watching a character and thinking ‘Wow! They’re so cool! They’re so much more awesome than I’ll ever get to be! They’re WAY above my level!’ because even if that character acts like a real human, there’s just an inherent level of detachment where they start to feel less and less normal and relatable. Another thing I love is when the protagonist isn’t at all qualified, strong or powerful but they win nonetheless through simple things like courage, kindness and determination (like in LOTR how Frodo never even does any fighting, but he still destroys the ring anyway through his sheer courage and determination). Stuff like that really warms my heart and makes me feel like, despite how weak, boring or just normal someone is, they can still achieve great things. Sorry if this was a bit of a rant.

I have almost the opposite perspective, but for the same reasons -- I tend to strongly dislike "unqualified everyman" protagonist characters because I can't relate to them, and because I look at them and go "Wow! Their story is so cool! Why do they get to be awesome and I don't, even though I'm better at things than they are?" Instead, I tend to like characters who are highly skilled in their field but not in an exaggerated/over-the-top way, normal characters who succeed because they learn to apply the skills they do have, or, if the setting is fantastical enough, characters whose powers essentially act as a fantasy version of a real-life skillset (for example, the character Saheeli Rai in Magic: The Gathering, who is basically a magical engineer/inventor with 3D printer powers). I do think characters who can't fight but still win with non-combat skills are SUPER underrated, though, like strategists and diplomats.

Characters don’t have to match a type for me to like them, but for me the most appearing ones would be: Glasses intelligent Intelligent but kind (Viktor from Arcane, Armin Arlert) Just kind in general and always wanting what’s best for others/the whole world Someone who will do ANYTHING for their sibling (bonus points for complex relationship) Oh yeah, and small traumatized child I will now emotionally adopt.

My favorite type of characters I tend to gravitate towards are…the gentle leader, someone who is kind and considerate but strong and reliable. Think Optimus prime or Leonardo for example, I don’t know why…but I find those type of characters very attractive and strangely relatable. The dorky nerd, I find them relatable as well. Characters like Donatello for example, I can relate to the nerd. And lastly the cocky lovable goofball, I don’t know why I find these characters so entertaining. Characters like Sonic or monkey king from Lego monkie kid, just make me feel happy for some reason.

You need to be loved Specially if their love is ignored or not acknowledged, and while they love MC, the MC keeps friend zoning them. I've seen this happen where the guy keeps flirting with the girl but the girl just sees him as a friend, like barbie and ken, but I've never seen a girl hitting on the guy while the guy just sees her as a friend, it's a breath of fresh air if i ever see one

I simply love these figures who don't know when to give up

They're so comically terrible yet confident and over the top it makes them endearing to me no matter what bad things they do. Best example and who I was thinking of while writing is Starscream, specifically his Transformers Prime iteration

A few recurring characters I tend to create: -The gentleman thief/people's hero -Paragons -A surprising, perhaps disturbing, amount of martial artists -Older heroes who have fought numerous battles and lost none of their game -The Sassy, flirtatious one who often acts as the smart one. -Villains who lust for power above all; generally comes out of already feeling superior and having a high status from birth, but never really trying to appreciate what they have or making the world a better place with their power. Instead, all they want is *more* .

The archetypical gentleman adventurer. I have soft spot for classic literature and I like this trope when well-executed. Also The cool and sometimes goofy mentor figure with troubled past. Kakashi from Naruto, Shark from a manga called Lindbergh, Kelsier from Mistborn, the list goes on. (EDIT: 2:10 you and I my friend, you and I.) Also quiet ronin characters. The whole set of tragic past, wandering without a place to call home, perhaps still finding good things in the world, meeting new people along the way, I just rerally enjoy it. If you can recommend any series with ronin-type of characters, I'd gladly hear you out.

I love trope-y characters but the one that comes to mind is the "sad clown," the pathetic man that's goofy and genuinely hilarious but also tragic and bears a deep sadness. Goob is the pinnacle and Doofensmirtz would also fit if he were more brooding. There was also this pic I saw of Spamton sitting as a lifeless doll abandoned in the rain and it spoke to me. Just something about these guys that hide the disappointment and pain of their own countless failures behind a facade hits home as a guy that's also completely directionless in life.

Sunshine characters who are funny, and brings life and joy to everyone around them. BUT they are not actually ok and they put up a great facade bc they don't want to make everyone else deal with their issues. Their friends only realise that they have a problem(s) when they accidentally let out a little dark comment/joke like it's nothing, but it's actually super dark and everyone silently stares at them in disbelief like, "..... excuse me??"
